While the federal gov definitely deserves blame for drafting and passing legislation that is flawed, I maintain that Meta should take the bigger blame in the current state of things. In our society, we generally discourage monopolies, and that is what Meta (and Google) have become. In particular, given the nature in which Meta and Google operate, I'd say they have a degree of social responsibility to bear.
But Turd's rant was still a difficult thing to watch -- it was the wrong place and the wrong time for him to rant on like that, and it felt every bit like how a losing politician is grasping at every last straw he can see to try and boost his poll ratings. Perhaps it was some sort of desperation coming off him, but it was just painful to watch.
Seriously, when things are this bad, the right thing for Turd to do is resign and let the Libs elect a new leader. I am not sure who would make a good retail politician among the current Liberal ranks, but it really is time for Turd to go.
As I have said before, he should have used the divorce as the perfect excuse to bow out.
Plain and simple, Turd tried to flex his muscle (his mouth) to a company outside of Canada that is larger then any company in Canada and they straight up said I don't think so, we do not need to put of with this and boom. The Canadian government got greedy and thought they have power when they have zero power outside of Canada. He's now having a big temper tantrum about it since he now knows how it's made him look and that's the only way he knows how to handle problems since he's a silver spoon fed pompous prick that's used to getting his way and being told yes sir.

Like I said before. Meta/Google were ALREADY paying some media companies a share for content. Until the law was passed.
This law was pointless and completely backfired.
It was entirely a result of a lobby group funded by old newspaper companies who can't financially stay afloat for various reasons that have nothing to do with Meta, but they want to portray Meta as as a scapegoat.
In 2018 the gov't offered a bailout to the big media companies to save them from going under. That bailout runs out this year. That's another reason why this law was drafted, so that instead of the gov't bailing them out again, they thought they could squeeze the money from Google and Meta instead. It's so dumb.

No, the Bill is signed, so it's law. A PM can't just change laws when he wants. The only way to change it now is to amend the law at the next session of Parliament.
Also -- for FB to roll out this blockage is actually a tremendous project. That's why it's taking several weeks for everyone to be included. I don't imagine it's possible for them to just flip a switch and suddenly news is on, then flip a switch and turn it off again.

Federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, an avid cyclist who says she does not own a car, was fined $273 for speeding in her home province of Alberta, a spokesperson said Tuesday.
Freeland was caught driving 132 km/hr between the towns of Grande Prairie and Peace River and has paid the ticket in full, her spokesperson Katherine Cuplinskas said.
Cuplinskas did not say when the incident occurred and what the speed limit had been on that stretch of road. The maximum speed limit on Alberta highways is 110 km/hr.
The news was first broken by the website Counter Signal.
Freeland, who is also deputy prime minister, represents the central Toronto riding of University–Rosedale and is often photographed on her bike.
"A fact that still shocks my dad is that I don't actually own a car," she told reporters last month.
"I walk, I take the subway. My kids walk and ride their bikes and take the subway — it's actually healthier for our family."
I think it would have been more of a scandal if she used some government powers to get out of paying it or something, but for a speeding ticket she paid who fucking cares lol
I think what makes it a story, as laid out in every article on this, is that she has those holier than thou attitude about not owning a car, saying it’s healthier to take transit etc. all the while getting speeding tickets and using a private car service.

While I don't necessarily like Freeland, I'd still say people are just making a big fuss out of nothing. But Alberta is notoriously Conservative, so I am not at all surprised it is trying for every opportunity to sling mud on the Liberals.
Let's say Freeland has this holier than thou attitude about not owning a car. But does that even make sense to give people the right to criticize her about using a private car service? If she is using a car sharing service, that can continue to serve as the perfect example of how people don't need to own cars to function in society. Walk / bus / ride whenever you can, and as much as you can. And when the times call for using a vehicle, you rent a ride with any of the car sharing services, or you catch an Uber / Lyft and get your thing done. Fewer people owning cars means fewer total number of cars on the road = less congestion.
And she can still say she is holier than thou bcos she still doesn't own a car, and has no need to own a car even for the times when she needs one.

^ this ... just a huge mountain out of a mole hill. What if it was a rental? C'mon people, making this a big deal shows that you have little or no substance. Critique her and the Libs on her financial policy, but leave this minor stuff to the tabloids.

I'm not caping for her, but the story doesn't even confirm if that was her vehicle, or a rental. If she doesn't own the car, that technically doesn't make her a liar, maybe she doesn't in fact own a car?
SCMP used to be a reputable English newspaper back in the British Hong Kong days. Even in the early years when Hong Kong has been handed back to China, it has continued to be a reputable newspaper.
But then it got acquired by the Alibaba Group -- aka Jack Ma's company -- and it has increasingly turned Communist red since. For quite a few years now, I basically view it as nothing more than another Communist China mouthpiece.
With the current China-Canada relationship in the dumps, it is not at all surprising to see a Chinese mouthpiece seizing the opportunity to badmouth Canada (and one of our high ranking political leaders).
