Personally, I have never understood Malcolm Brodie's appeal, but Richmond voters have repeatedly voted for him over the last 20+ years -- often with landslide victories. So it seems pretty unlikely that a single safe injection site proposal would be enough to bring him down at the next municipal election.
I think it's white p envy ... he is generally pretty mild mannered and a safe choice. That and there hasn't really been any worthy candidate to challenge him. But honestly, I don't know how old he is but he is getting cranky and a bit senile.
We spent like 30 years on appeasement and harm reduction. Clearly it failed. Why don't we try a new method, law & order. stop funding all those "non-profit" organizations that feed off the poverty industry. minimum jail sentence or ship all the bums to bowen island hunger game style lol
But harm reduction alone obviously failed or spending most of your $$ on harm reduction without treatment, rehab, etc. Apparently, it is a 1-3 month wait if someone wants to go into a detox rehab program. Have to reduce that wait time. If fact, I know it is against the Civil Liberties union folks but I would force someone to go into treatment if they came to a safe injection site. You want to come in, you have to participate in a detox program. It's called tough love.
I think it's more confounding that Richmond is debating a safe injection site, meanwhile the city STILL has not allowed a single Cannabis dispensary, a product that is entirely legal in Canada.
Even before the vote they had mentioned they do not see the rationale behind building a standalone SIS in Richmond (this is why Councillor Loo reversed her original vote when she learned of this).
That said, they do say they feel other harm reduction and intervention services may be useful to consider implementing.
Maybe this was a tactic, to ask for something huge first but then when the consolation/alternative is a smaller but step in right direction people will be less up in arms about it.

^ haha ... if that was their strategy, that was a genius move. Cuz if VCH said, we are thinking of building a detox rehab facility ... all the naysayers who said, 'we are not against drug users, we have compassion for them, should do prevention and treatment, blah blah, blah ... " now would have to eat their words. Something tells me they would freak at the thought of a rehab facility in Richmond.

You lousy Guangdong bastard ! You’re doing it wrrrrooonnnnggggggg !!!!
Having grown up in Richmond (no longer there now, so don't have much dog in this fight), my perspective is that there hasn't been any major partisan issue he's really had to deal with over the years.
I think given the location being separated by a bridges/transit, Richmond has not had to face challenging issues that other municipalities have. e.g. one councillor yesterday took credit for the small number of drug-related deaths was BECAUSE of the decisions they've made around drug policy.
Additionally the makeup of the citizens are fairly similar-minded when it comes to political perspectives, and do not cause much noise at the municipal level (same cannot be argued on a federal level, e.g. money laundering, drugs, etc.).
Lifetime Richmond resident here, you are correct... up until the recen debates on home sizes and improper use of farm land... that's the only partisan issue I can think of where the automaticness of him being voted in has been threatened.

Speaking of XLB, I tried the authentic Shanghainese food court place (Hao Chi Lai) that came highly recommended by Badhobz, and while it was quite good (and cheaper to boot than the stall at the other end of the food court -- Long's), overall my Cantonese palate still prefers the XLBs from Long's.
I can already foresee how I'm gonna get into a fist fight with Badhobz if we end up meeting in person. Over XLB.
Canadian family with 8 children sell everything and move to Russia to get away from the gays. A month later they are not to happy. They don't even speak Russian from the looks of it.

Wait a sec. Isn't Long's owned and operated by Shanghainese? I recall the lady there had a phenomenal memory!

LOL what a bunch of morons. Now they're going to get their assets seized by the Russian government and come back running back to Canada (if they can) and get on the welfare.
Reminds me of this family...The guy is white, the woman muslim. For some reason my Youtube algorithm put these idiots on my feed, maybe cause I watch a bunch of travel vids?:
Imagine being a cis white guy in Canada with every possible advantage handed to you at birth, marrying a muslim woman, converting and then bitching about "racism" and "wokeness"

I have been to Russia though and while I only went to st.petersburg anything directly outside of the city limits is like going back to the 1800’s. So I doubt they found much improvement over Canada lol
