The default penalty is probation with mandatory addiction treatment, with no jail time or fines. If someone breaks probation they could face up to six months in jail, but all criminal records under the offence are automatically expunged within at least three years.
This new approach seems completely reasonable. Can only hope BC comes to its senses before its too late, but it likely already is.

What all these jurisdictions failed to account for was the junkies thinking decriminalization = "I can now do this wherever I want without consequence". And it kind of emboldened them. And here we are.
I know I’m sounding like a contrarian in saying healthcare is garbage but I’m also relying on a brand new hospital being my backup plan, However, as I’ve said, that’s given an emergency and not proper diagnosis and I think both can be true in the current climate of healthcare in Canada.
You also shouldn't have to feel like you're tied to a specific location purely because of a new hospital. You should be able to go anywhere in the country and receive the same high level of care without having to think about it.

Except specialists, surgeons, etc. almost always practice in big cities. So try getting a heart surgery in Prince George ... would you?
Scaled to the size of the city/area of course. Yes the more specialized your needs the more you may need to travel but Langley shouldn't be that different from Vancouver or Calgary or Ottawa.

Langley has a dramatically smaller population than Calgary or Ottawa though -- it's like 1/10th the population of Calgary, and 1/7th of Ottawa.
For a long time, Surrey was really behind in terms of available medical resources. But at least the provincial gov has pumped some serious money into Surrey Memorial now.
Well whatever is the size of Langley then. I'm from Kelowna, once I clear the mountains it's all Vancouver to me lol. I have no idea how big all the cities are or even where they are.

I’ve got nothing but praise to VGH and BC cancer foundation. They are truly world class facilities and the level of care anyone I’ve known who has had to deal with them has been top notch. We even have it in our will to leave money to BC cancer upon our passing.
Imo the issue is diagnosis and the que you are in to even be seen. Honestly the best course of action is unfortunately calling 911 or getting your ass dragged into the hospital (legitimate or not) in order to get the gamut of tests done which may take YEARS going through the proper avenues via family doctor, tele-health, etc.
A huge problem as well is that all care is not equal. My former boss’s brother had crazy inflammation and chronic pain issues which they just could not figure out. He was a fairly average guy in terms of employment, income, etc. however my boss was definitely of means and he actually paid out of pocket to get private diagnosis etc. (or attempt to at least)
Eventually their family doctor literally said, we’ve exhausted everything Langley and Fraser Health has to offer. He said.. drive to Vancouver, collapse on the sidewalk, and have the ambulance take you to VGH, because Langley does not have the capacity to diagnose whatever is going on with you. He did just this, he was fast tracked to specialists, and eventually was diagnosed. Good luck if you live outside the lower mainland.
A big thing in the back of my mind in not wanting to leave the lower mainland is that the BRAND NEW St.Pauls is like a 8 minute drive away from my home. As a fall-back plan in an emergency, you can’t really ask for better, nor for surgeries etc. if it was to come to that point. I know I’m sounding like a contrarian in saying healthcare is garbage but I’m also relying on a brand new hospital being my backup plan, However, as I’ve said, that’s given an emergency and not proper diagnosis and I think both can be true in the current climate of healthcare in Canada.
This is quite true, Fraser Health Authority sucks ass, they're one of the worst. VCH is the pinnacle in this province, and it's not even close.
2024 Budget was announced, I'm surprised there isn't more discussion about it.
I've been harping for years about capital gains taxation and it's disparity between the income tax rate, I'm very happy the government is finally tackling this gross unfairness.
The amount of astroturfing online about how this will hurt "doctors" and "families with a summer cottage" is quite laughable.

"HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO RETIRE ON OUR INVESTMENT PROPERTY GAINS?????"
Either maybe fuck yourself or save money like the other 90% of the population. The most annoying part of it is that it will have people with $322.49 in their savings to be like FUCK THE GOVERNMENT THEY ARE STEALING FROM ME without understanding that it will have no negative effects on them.

Well, it does suck for everyone when the government makes rules, you identify a path to get ahead, adapt your stuff to it and then they turn around and say thanks for doing that, we're going to tax it more now.
They do this constantly at every level that anyone can make money at, not just richie riches.

Hindsight is 20/20, but a wealth tax should have been implemented generations ago and maybe we wouldn't be at this point in capitalism where it ceases to function for 90% of the population, and skills, innovation and hard work would still be the main driver for financial reward.

Started following this guy a while ago with his tiktok series about canadian housing vs literal european castles. Think he does some really good stuff. This video he does less analysis but still a good discussion.

TBF 90% of the population of Canada saving their money is a very generous percentage. Agreed on all other points. Fuck "Cottage people" tho, bunch of fucking Laurentian elites can go fuck themselves.

In typical fashion it’s just this reactionary measure that rolls over every person in an attempt to effect the people the govt. is too scared to single out, foreign investment, tax cheats, money laundering etc.
Middle class gets hit again. As you said people do well and make a life for themselves through hard work etc. only to have money taken from them by no fault of their own.
So a real world example we have a family member who has a place on the gulf islands, has had said place for 25 years. Extremely hard working self-made person, business owner, employs a dozen or more people etc. completely self made. They recently purchased a new place there after looking to upgrade for the past few years. As a result they will be selling the old place they’ve owned for 20+ years.
If they don’t sell it prior to the new capital gains change, that will be almost $60,000 less on a place worth 6xx,xxx.
By no fault of their own, the govt. takes a $60,000 cut of a property they’ve owned for 20+ years.
These are not incredibly wealthy people, they do not air bnb their place, they use it strictly for leisure.
It’s not hard to see why investment as a whole in Canada suffers under all levels of govt. when the goal posts are constantly moving. Frankly while I don’t see any other way than limiting short term rentals and eliminating airbnbs etc. (although I highly doubt this will do anything in the long run) imagine you purchase a condo etc. think to use it as a vacation property and rent it out in the meantime, and then virtually out of the blue the govt. changes the legislation on property YOU OWN and now you’re out that income and absorb the blunt reality of either selling or just absorbing the cost? Thay the govt. a week before said was fine?
I know people in this thread are gonna be “oh woe is me” for these people, but when you’re fucking with property people own and have mortgages etc. on for the sake of these bandaid fixes, fuck them. It’s fucking gross.
Everything is this last ditch effort to show an appearance that they are trying to fix the gigantic mess they’ve created themselves.

Honda, your scenario isn't the common one. That same government has also created the environment that has allowed your friend's so see property increases on that place to what I assume it's worth today. Your friend I assume is making a profit exceeding $250K if they sell today, correct? If so, paying taxes on that is a fair result. When making a policy change such as this one, there will always be winners and losers.
You can't just be against everything, this is why politics is failing in this country. No one actually stands for real policies, but rather sit on the sidelines complaining about everything.
