It is inconsistent... wildly so. Pure cost? My experience so far: 24 GR Supra ICBC: $2,300 -- this seems like a pretty standard full discount new car <$80k price 24 GR Supra Desjardins Alberta: $1,167 -- huge discount, the only thing I can figure is that I have yet to see another GR Supra the entire time I've been there. But hold on! Desjardins asked if my car had any modifications. I said I put aftermarket wheels on it. They asked me if they were a different size? I said not really, they're 19" wheels... but the rears are 0.5" wider and I went to a 285 tire instead of a 275. Desjardins said they won't give me collision coverage anymore. My car is modified for more performance and therefore I'm likely a risky driver. Same if I lowered it, put an intake on it or pretty much ANYTHING. Technically they even consider my 3M taped on carbon fibre spoiler a performance modification. I am stuck putting stock wheels back on or finding another insurer that charges who knows what for modded cars. Also, if I had a ticket in the last 5 years? Surcharge. I don't, my last ticket was 6 years ago... but 5 years?! The fuck is that? 2017 Kia Soul: $1,4xx with ICBC 2017 Kia Soul: $1,7xx with Desjardins in AB... for some weird reason this car is more expensive in AB than BC, no idea why MR2 Turbo? IS300? Too old. Find someone who cares about old cars. They quoted way more than I pay in BC just to get rid of me, told me to talk to Hagerty because they'd write any of those cars off if I even made a windshield claim and give me nothing for them. Now, I don't think ICBC is the be all end all... but if anyone who is even remotely a car enthusiast in BC wants Alberta's system, unless you want to start your own privatized agency to SELL insurance... you're nuts. (noclue already mentioned this, but it's worth mentioning again) --> one benefit worth mentioning is if you get your home and car insurance from the same broker, in my case Desjardins, you get stackable discounts on your home AND car... 10-20%... so the definitely encourage you to get into their ecosystem. |
Having insured vehicle in 4 provinces of this country. ICBC is the cats ass. Private insurance is a pain in the ass. |
i guess the upside is that you have a '24 supra Kappa |
Upside: GR Supra Downside 1: "BRO.... BRUH.... IZ THAT A THUPRA???" Downside 2: "You know it's a BMW right?" https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2b/b0...f6424a5608.gif |
People in Alberta are fckd Ouch: Driver premiums in Alberta could rise by nearly 88% by 2033 https://dailyhive.com/calgary/albert...river-premiums Quote:

The modification thing would really piss me off. Like even the ratrolla has aftermarket wheels. Not to mention hitler box is dripping in aliexpress swagoo Thank god for icbc. |
I have a mix of BC and AB plate cars right now, not sure how I’m gonna end up sorting it all out. My MR2 and IS300 still have BC plates and collector ones on the MR2… the Kia still has a BC plate too. Try to keep it that way for the time being I guess, I changed my addresses for them and my license to my parents house. Easy for me to say as an armchair GM new to the places but I feel like one of the biggest things they need to address in Calgary is how they combat snow and ice driving. They use a rock and salt mix and seems like pretty much everyone replaces a windshield annually if not more than once annually. That’s crazy especially with rising industry costs so insurers are possibly paying out like $1500/year per car if that’s the case…how can they make money? The city needs to invest in equipment that can suck up or vacuum up those rocks every spring instead of leaving that shit around to just flow off to the sides where you see it piled up all summer near curbs or on the shoulders of all the highways. |
They don't use street sweepers out there? We have them roll through every spring. |
I see sweepers likes street cleaners you'd see in Vancouver sometimes... but that just kinda pushes all the rocks around lol... there's literally piles of gravel at the shoulder of almost every road. I feel like they need something that would actually suck the gravel up... and it would pay for itself over time if they collected them all and then could redistribute in the next winter again instead of constantly sourcing new gravel. |
Lovely ICBC story to tell since the circle jerk is still going strong So my wife’s uncle is always wheeling and dealing vehicles, not so much to make profit but he just likes trying new vehicles he’ll keep them for a bit and then sell. So now there is zero provision to claim a lesser value for the sale of a used vehicle any longer regardless of condition. He recently bought a 2018 hybrid pathfinder and the thing had a blown transmission, he looks into it and it’s $16,000 from Nissan for a new transmission.. so he figures fuck it, going to risk buying this vehicle and try to fix the transmission. In order to claim less than book value on the transfer of a vehicle, you now need a VI to prove this is the case. He knows a bunch of people with garages, shops, etc. but none of them do this type of inspection. He finally finds a guy, and after the $200 inspection, the guy says he can’t verify the condition of the transmission even though it’s throwing all these CEL codes and this hybrid pathfinder is a known lemon and was part of a huge class action lawsuit in the states. So even after paying for an inspection, he’s forced to pay book value on the transfer.. They also got rid of the gift clause completely, so it’s the same process gifting vehicles to family. |
That's the provincial government not ICBC. ICBC is just the only way the province can enforce it. Valuation tool is Canadian Black Book. Again I don't thin ICB is the be all and end all, lots of horror stories out there... but those are true regardless of where you go in the world. Someone always has a negative interaction. My Supra is a deal in AB with private... if it's STOCK... which is why I specified that car enthusiasts are crazy to want private. Wife's uncle is a flipper no matter how you slice it... he got burned made a bad call... not like he didn't know the number were there before he went ahead with it / it shouldn't have been a surprise to him. It is nice in AB that there's zero tax on private used car sales... but again that has absolutely nothing to do with insurance. |
There are more provinces in this country than Alberta. |
??? what you on about bro You're conflating provincial tax laws screwing someone with an insurance provider screwing someone, blame is misplaced, does it matter what other provinces there are? |

A car having sales tax being paid on it multiple times throughout its lifetime is digsuting. |
Yah it is, but again it's a provincial law, nothing to do with insurance costs or the insurer |

Back to my original point, the only comparable that’s ever been brought up is Alberta and how “expensive” it is relative to BC. Whereas other provinces throughout Canada have both the ICBC model as well as the mixed private model, and most of these places pay less. |
It's mixed though, my Supra is cheaper given my driving history, however the Kia the MR2 and the Lexus are more expensive. AND the Lexus and MR2 get shit coverage... ie: not market value if they get totaled... So ??? What do you want to compare with/ Manitoba or something? Of course it's cheaper to drive there, the population of the entire province is less than Vancouver proper. You want rates from a place with no cars but also to live here. It doesn't work that way. |

Private insurer will charge more but give you a discount if you install their telematics so big brother can monitor your driving usage and adjust your rates accordingly. Also if you get a ticket a bit more severe than speeding 20 over such as cellphone or excessive speed it’s likely they will either drop you asap or at renewal. Good luck convincing other insurers to cover you without paying an exorbitant premium. I do agree it’s communist to charge sales tax again and again on a used vehicle but that’s the NDP. It’s also the liberals that introduced the luxury tax though. |

^ It's the type of coverage too... I remember reacing out to Hagerty when I had my 87 BMW, 94 MR2 and 93 Prelude all on collector plates... they had some options for pooling vehicles and the big thing with them was undisputed declared value! Pay you out whatever you say the car is worth (although your premium reflects that claimed amount) which is a pretty damn cool option even if it does cost a bit more. If the cheaper coverage somewhere else writes your car off for a windshield and says book value $800 is it still worth it??? Pretty hard to say but I'd probably go with the better coverage even if it costs 2x as much rather than drive around everywhere with my sphincter tightened. |

As I said, there is no tangible data on just regular rates. You can’t just use an 18 year old that has had 2 DUI’s and is paying $4800 a year for a 2001 civic and say “Alberta is more!!!” If ICBC is the best option, fine. But the quote for my car in Alberta is basically the exact same as it is here, so apples to apples, I don’t think it’s far fetched to say, for me personally, a private system could potentially be cheaper elsewhere than what I pay with ICBC here. |
Doesn’t your apples to apples comparison mean you’re wrong? If AB is the same as here, Calgary has 1.34 million people in it… your risk is way lower there, so it should be miles cheaper to insure your car there than in Van. Throw in the penalties and options to not sell you insurance at all if you get ticketed or have an at fault accident and it gets even worse? |
