Well, what gets conveniently left out in our Canadian history lessons is that in 1812 we also had the full support of the British Military. The burning of Washington DC was actually done by British Regulars, in retaliation for the Americans burning down York (Toronto)

Badhobz 11-26-2024 11:57 AM

Ummm chucky’s head is still on the back of our money, pretty sure we still British as shit.

God save the king !

Hondaracer 11-26-2024 11:57 AM

Let me rephrase my previous posts

- does anyone have confidence Trudeau will do the right thing for Canadians when it comes to these tariff negotiations?

Badhobz 11-26-2024 12:00 PM

Fuck turd. It’s moot. He’s gonna lose the election next year.

The problem is can PEE PEE do any better ? I got a feeling we gonna get squashed by trumps insanity and our industries will all feel his insane rhetoric. We going to be in for a rough 4 years regardless of who’s in the prime ministers seat.

I’m spending all my bonus this year on luxury shit. It’s gonna be lean next few years I’m sure.

Hondaracer 11-26-2024 12:05 PM

If PP tows trumps line, it will almost certainly be better for your average Canadian

Badhobz 11-26-2024 12:10 PM

I don’t see how. The Canadian dollar keeps slipping and even if he doesn’t do 25% tariffs and goes down to a 5-10% it’ll still diminish the Canadian dollar even further. Exports makes up 70% of the Canadian economy and out of that 70%, 60~70% goes straight to the USA. Many Canadian businesses will fail as a result and unemployment will skyrocket.

Too bad turd shat the bed with China and now also India. Both of these countries are not too keen for Canadian products after all the heavy rhetoric about their politics. So besides the US who wants our exports ? Europe doesn’t need naturally resources as they don’t produce anything.

Nobody wants to do business with us man. We are left holding the bag being America’s little bitch.

So I talk about this quite often when Americans like to go fuck Canada whooo America

But did you know in their version of events, at least in my friend's case that's born and raised in Texas, they learned that Canada burned down an unused section of the White House - like the old library or warehouse lol.

He burnt every other bridge we had in terms of exports. Literally poisoned the largest trading partner relationships we had.

Our only hope now is bending over for the US and leveraging that relationship into rebuilding others.

We are wayyyy worse off than people realize. Tariffs are just the cherry on top to how poor of a position we are in.

Hopefully everyone has a good job hehe

PPs exact words are "he will fight fire with fire"
Like what's that gonna do? PP is gonna say, ok but we will put tariffs on YOUR products. Have fun buying groceries.

JDMDreams 11-26-2024 01:06 PM

I'm really curious how this will play out, I doubt he will actually put the tariffs in as it will fuck USA over too and create inflation. However on the other hand we do deserve it for being USA's hoe and doing whatever they say, Huawei lady, fuck up China, India, Mexico. You can't blame anyone but our weak government.

I'm ready to buy the mate trifold.

Yeah in 1812 the White House was probably wasn't much more than a glorified tear down, probably did them a favour lol. I was actually there this summer, the burning does get a brief mention but it's always "The British burned down the White House in 1814, but it was saved because it rained a lot" Canadians are never mentioned.

Basically no one won the war of 1812. The US stopped Britain from kidnapping it's citizens to serve in the Royal Navy. And Britain stopped the US from gaining any Canadian territory. Everything was back to what it was before. Status Quo Ante Bellum.

Remember it was a war between the US and Great Britain. Canada was dragged into it because we were literally still just an extension of GB. In fact Canada in 1812 was really only Quebec and a few sparse Loyalist settlements in Ontario and the Maritimes. We really weren't shit at the time.

so you are saying we should have been buddy buddy with china instead of the US on the meng wanzhou issue?

Dbone 11-26-2024 02:19 PM

I don't think it's quite as lop sided as you guys are saying.

Canada is the US's largest trading partner, and largest foreign property and farmland owner.

We supply them with a shit ton of goods, and in some areas like car manufacturing are completely integrated. Trump will come in charging, and all we have to do is point out to his team where we can work together and why and it will be OK.

Do you remember during Covid Trump said they'd stop selling N95 masks to Canada and then very quickly never mentioned that again? Well, the pulp for a lot of those N95s come from Nanaimo, and you can't just stand up that kind of mill over night.

So as long as we don't get some reactionary in charge.. (cough, PP, cough) then we'll work through this shit show. It's annoying we have to do it AGAIN, but what are you gonna do.

edit: By the way, you can't cheer for interest rate cuts and a stronger CAD at the same time. If we cut rates out of step with the US the dollar is going to drop more.

JDMDreams 11-26-2024 02:45 PM

No but we should have been neutral. Why did we put tariffs on Chinese cars if we don't have any besides Tesla. Vietnam is communist too you think vinfast doesn't have government support? Don't forget da Chinese spy balloons:pokerface::lawl:

Mexico is quickly becoming the US's largest trading partner, (they're right behind us).

I wouldn't be surprised if they surpass us in the next 2-3 years here.

Tons of factories are still being built right now in places like Monterrey.

pastarocket 11-26-2024 02:53 PM

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/video/...trade-tariffs/

I wonder what Turd and the premiers will discuss in terms of a strategy to deal with Cheeto's tariffs.

I read something recently that they are cornering the market a bit with all the tariffs on China from the US in that they are just buying mass amounts of made in china goods and semi-processed raw materials and just re-stamping them made in Mexico then reselling to the states

JDMDreams 11-26-2024 03:29 PM

It's like that all over the world, I'm sure Mexico is pretty lax in regulation, made in Mexico is nothing to be proud of. Even for Swiss Made, it just has to be like 60% of "value" originate from Switzerland. Considering how cheap it is to produce in China that doesn't seem hard, just insert x part and say it costs x much. It's the same as those wine, whiskey, champagne designations. You basically make your own rules.

CivicBlues 11-26-2024 03:30 PM

I mean, can you blame 'em? Mexican workers are probably cheaper than Chinese ones at this point.

Plus the US used to do something similar with Guam. Shit used to be made there and stamped with "Made in the USA" with cheap Guamanian labour until congress extended labour laws to it's territory.

Harvey Specter 11-26-2024 03:53 PM

The Canadian economy is already on shaky ground, and the last thing we need is the threat of a trade war. I’ve no doubt Trump will hit us with tariffs, which would likely stall our economic growth, further weaken our dollar, and force the BoC to rethink rate cuts. Our main economic driver which is RE s just a month or two of bad economic news away from a deep freeze. Throw in geopolitical drama, wars, and Germany teetering on the edge of a full blown recession that could ripple across Europe, and next year’s outlook for us is looking quite bleak.

This is true, for colonial Canada. Anyone involved was given Canadian land if they wanted it, and many veterans became Canadians eventually. Also I believe they gave the York militia the honor of setting the building ablaze. If so, it actually was Canadians (colonists) who burned the actual White House!

Badhobz 11-26-2024 03:57 PM

Yap. Enjoy this Xmas boys. It’ll be the last good one before 4 years of hell.

Hondaracer 11-26-2024 04:11 PM

Any source for that? About the troops eventually settling in Canada instead of going home to Britain? Genuinely curious I'm not trying to be flippant or anything like that.

Colonial land grants for military service were common back then - they had a lot of stolen land to give! If you google war of 1812 and land grant or acreage, you will find more specifics. I found this blurb

Here's a story on the Coloured Corps receiving some land in lieu of being returned to Africa. I do like the idea of freed slaves helping burn down the White House as well SeemsGood
