We have no choice but to start a trade war, they want a trade war we give them one. Turn off the water and electricity taps. Or do you prefer to be a good soft Canadian and bend over with a negotiated 15% tariff, nothing is stopping them with starting another round of sanctions or tariffs on us. Ive said this to a lot of people, we literally have wealth underneath our feet. We have land! we have natural resources, we have fresh water and minerals. Oil and Gas.
Our natural endowment is god given and thus we should be one of the most prosperous nations on earth (we kinda were at one point).
But we give that shit away for peanuts. LITERAL peanuts. I see exports and imports all day long, that's my job. All I see is the declared value of our resources going out at like 1-2 dollars per TON while we import shit that are few hundred dollars per lb.
We are squandering this wealth. We should be charging all these fuckers an arm and a leg for our materials because in reality go get it from somewhere else then. you literally cant. this is especially true for the US. The fact that they got us by the balls and not reverse makes no sense when they are heavily dependent on Canadian resources for their standard of living.

A co worker and I were discussing another strategy that "Team Canada" could follow in response to Trump's threats of a 25 percent tariff on Canadian exports.
What if Canada jacked up the utility rates on electricity and water that is exported to the U.S?
If the Americans want electricity from Canada, Canada can jack up the utility rates by 300 percent. They want our bottled water? Jack up the price of freshwater exports.
Apparently, Quebec and Ontario sell a lot of electrictiy down to eastern states, so it could be a viable response for us to take if Trump makes good on the 25% tariff threat. But as soon as we dig deeper, it becomes a lot more complicated than that.
A lot of the power that Ontario and Quebec sells to the eastern states appears to come from hydro, and the problem with hydro power is -- you can't really bottle it up and sell it to someone else. So if ON/QC don't sell to the US, they just become excess power that ON/QC wouldn't know what to do with.
And then it kind of goes back into being a game of chicken / who blinks first.
With water, personally I wouldn't mind if we stop selling it to the US. It's a precious resource, and we (Canada) should have better water management policies to ensure that we can protect this precious resource for future generations (of Canadians). In theory, US has enough water resources within US to satisfy their needs too. It's just that when they buy from us, it's easier / cheaper for them to do so, so they do it.
So again, if we retialiate and add tariffs to our water exports, it becomes the another game of chicken / who blinks first, and both sides end up losing.

We at the port of Vancouver have been trying to get another HUGE container terminal underway at roberts bank for years now. There's been one road block after another either due to native treaties, or environmental shit (some stupid bitch ass sea bird) and now a lot of shippers have moved either to Seattle/Tacoma or just skipped this coast and routed via europe to east coast USA.
We needed this container terminal 10 years ago as the terminals in the inner harbor downtown are too small to accommodate the volumes we are getting.
So instead of giving local residents over 1000+ new jobs, a better standard of living, and protecting our industry, we elected to save a few fucking birds and some native land shit.
You know who could have been working there? ALL OF YOUS! all of your kids, bic baws wouldn't only have 50 bucks in this bank cuz I would have been able to get him a job there. and what did we get instead? BITCH ASS BIRDS. FUCK YOU BIRD. FUCK YOU WHALE AND DOLPHIN

That’s exactly it. It’s green lit but there are hundreds of special interest groups who wants to put their opinions / objectives and will ultimately delay or kill this project completely.
By the time it finally break ground (if even) it’ll be under serving the needs of the industry again as usual.

This has always been the problem. We studied this shit in high school social studies decades ago. I've never understood why we sell our resources for pennies and buy them back as finished products for exponentially more. We just don't put any effort into manufacturing for some reason. Nestle has been taking advantage of our water supply for how many decades now? Simple shit like this hasn't been corrected and likely never will be until some significant changes are made. Who knows, maybe trade war is the catalyst. I highly suspect Canadian politicians won't have the back bone for it though.

The local longshore foreman’s are under binding arbitration so they are forced back to work by the government and whatever agreement they end up settling with the mediator is what they’ll get.
Ultimately both sides lose as nobody is happy and we’ll do this all over again in 1-3 years because that’s just how these collective agreements are signed.
Same with the ports, bro you guys are fighting robots just so you can get paid $60h a hour as a unskilled labourer? Hire 3 suck deeps at $20 and you can have x3 the amount of workers.

What's everyone's thoughts on Globe and Mail as a publication?
I have some perks with my Wealthsimple account, one of which I can use towards a 1yr subscription to Globe and Mail and I am considering it.
I sometimes come across business articles and stock articles from G&M that is paywalled, but I am not sure if the rest of the content is worth using the perk towards it.
Also none of the other perks really stand out to be very useful either.
