Well you were right about Hong Kong, I'll give you that.
It's probably just the hyperbole. If you are gonna objectively say Vancouver was a way better place to live pre pandemic, you're right. But, I don't think you're considering how many places you could say that about (hint: it's basically everywhere)
The world is fucked up, and it's gonna get worse, and then it might get better for a bit, then probably get worse again. It's a tale as old as time.

Well.. according to this article Nanaimo’s crime severity index is one of the worst in this country, very comparable to large US cities.
Surrey, Kelowna, and Kamloops are also very bad.

Did you read that article? Quote:
A big contributor driving 2023 crime figures was a 52-per cent increase in police-reported child pornography offences, fuelled by increased reporting of old and new cases being forwarded to local police by provincial and national internet child exploitation units, according to StatsCan’s report. Fraud was up 12 per cent, shoplifting jumped 18 per cent and motor vehicle theft rose five per cent. Breaking and entering, on the other hand, has continued its downward trend since the 1990s and dropped five per cent.
| Quote:
"One of the main reasons for those is our [staffing] numbers are getting back up.
| So crime stats go up when reporting rates and police staff numbers go up. That's hardly a shocking revelation. Quote:

| Wait a minute
Vancouver population 706k 48 murders
Nanaimo population 104k 3 murders
104kx7= 728k
3x7= 21
Vancouver is way more dangerous than Nanaimo.

Well yeah a major port city is going to be more dangerous than a ferry terminal town where the average age is 70.

Vancouver is way more dangerous than Nanaimo. | Your stats are all based on murders
The crime severity index for nanaimo is one of the highest in the country https://canadacrimereport.com/crime-...pulation=75000
Violent and nonviolent crime are both top 10 in the country relative to the population.

According to that, metro Vancouver is down from 2010 in both violent and non violent crimes.
Thanks Trudeau.

Jagmeet finally grows a backbone and says he’ll call a non-confidence vote?
Albeit this is after he gave multiple interviews saying he wouldn’t so let’s watch him backtrack on this Quote:
After months of being non-committal, in a new letter, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his caucus "will vote to bring this government down, and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them."
In the letter, addressed to Canadians, Singh says he will "put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons."
"I called for Justin Trudeau to resign, and he should," Singh said, not specifying how early into the 2025 sitting this motion moving to defeat the prime minister's Liberal government could be advanced.

Imagine comparing Vancouver crime to an American city counterpart
Come on.
The kind of crime that makes the nightly news in a US city would make the news report for weeks in Vancouver.
A mass shooting of some type happens almost any given week down here in Texas. You know how many reports I see here in San Antonio of dudes just laying a few rounds into another person's vehicle over road rage incidents? Almost daily.
Some parts of America are pretty crazy man, you're told down here not to use your horn unless it's serious, as there's a good chance you might get a Glock round in your driver's side door. You'd never find anything like that in Canada.
Vancouver has never came close to some of the sketchy areas I've been to here in the US, that combined with the lack of armed citizens, Canada is a fucking cakewalk compared to down here
I honestly am looking forward to coming back home. I love the warm weather (t-shirts and shorts in December), but you definitely start to appreciate what we have back home, and what we take for granted that isn't here.

All I remember about San Antonio when I went 1.5 year ago to meet up with El Bastardo was a little impromptu parking lot car show we went to with some amazingly well done domestics/muscle cars and great Mexican food.... besides that, driving there from Austin like every 30 seconds passing massive billboards for personal injury and accident lawyers... just one after another... and having to constantly watch your 6 because uninsured dudes in 2003-2009 Altima V6 (or even worse, 2.5 Extras) with lights broken and bumpers hanging off are constantly trying to kill you.

Dude living down here I will never complain about Vancouver drivers again.
These Texans drive like fucking maniacs. I drive a sports car, and I drive fast, yet somehow on the highway I will always have a jacked up Tonka truck on my ass tailgating me.
Signaling is optional. Red lights? That's a Texas yellow, run through that shit. Billboards with injury attorneys every 20 meters, as you said a bunch of uninsured, manic Latino drivers.
It's jarring to watch because all these trucks that are 10-feet off the ground with push bumpers are the ones that drive the most erratic, they don't give a fuck because they're safe in those damn tanks. You get hit in a car or as a pedestrian by one of these assholes, you're good as dead.
Trash people.

edit: To be clear, I mean the comments bashing Nanaimo not the port vs ferry thing. I thought Nanaimo was crap too until I realized it's the highway that's crap. Where I am it's like 80's Dundarave.
If I were to guess, I'd say Manic is in the Rock City area which has amazing views. Just a wild guess though.

Rich folks in Texas need that extra protection from road rage. | I'd see that more in Houston/Dallas, Houston especially, some very nice cars down there.
We're spoiled in Vancouver though, I haven't been in a city in North America where I've seen more balling cars per capita.
The wealthier in San Antonio tend to drive F-150/350s jacked up on suspension packages, push bars, that's considered "luxury" in this city.

Albeit this is after he gave multiple interviews saying he wouldn’t so let’s watch him backtrack on this | Since the termination of the supply and confidence agreement, I don't recall Jagmeet coming out in the open to say he wouldn't support a non-confidence vote. It is true that he has frequently been asked if he would support such a motion, and every time he would give some sort of BS reply about :
- needing to focus on getting things done
- to deliver on actionable policies to support Canadian families in need
- make a blurb about how the NDP successfully milked the Liberals' ball sack to get the diabetes + contraception meds
- accuse PeePee of only wanting to seek power for himself
and weasel out of directly answering the question.
Then since the Chrystia Freeland bombshell -- no, I don't mean Freeland is hot -- his tone has changed, and when he is repeatedly asked the same question, his answer has now become:
- Turd needs to resign
- they will focus on helping Canadians in need
- but nothing is off the table
then goes back to some variation of the above BS that I've mentioned earlier. But essentially, he is still weaseling out of giving a direct answer.
Purportedly, the NDP has no money to support an election campaign. Their fund raising efforts are failing to bring in any meaningful amount of money, and their support continue to in a race to the bottom with the Libs. It was actually pretty funny when I watched an interview yesterday where the reporter point blank asked him about the NDP's poll numbers being the same or slightly below that of the Liberals, and he denied it by saying the polls show they are gaining ground over the Libs, and the reporter challenged him again.
The NDP is basically caught in a bind because they literally can't afford an election in more ways than one, and yet they can't continue to prop up the Libs either.
It'll be interesting to see how badly the NDP does in the election.
At the provincial level, I'm sure the (federal) NDP agreeing to vote down the Libs is also causing headaches for Doug Ford. He was at least partially banking on voter ignorance to support the Conservative brand, and hold an early provincial election before the federal one takes place. Now all of that wishful thinking has been blown out of the water.
