Yeah it's a weird place. I lived there for a year and I knew it was rough when a cabbie gave me a lift for free when he heard me say I was going to the nearest bus stop because "you'll get stabbed over there"

Most of rural Canada is a hole. Even here in BC smaller cities are getting overrun by drugs and criminals.

blkgsr 12-20-2024 12:01 PM

because all the shit bags that used to live in the bigger cities can't afford to live there anymore so they're moving to the sticks.

Well.. according to this article Nanaimo’s crime severity index is one of the worst in this country, very comparable to large US cities.

A lot of problems in Nanaimo come from drug addicts who have moved here from other cities. We have multiple lower barrier housing projects. 2 are gated and you can't see whats going on inside. Those get a lot of calls. You also have a lot of theft. Honda makes Nanaimo seem to be some super dangerous place but it's not.

Manic! 12-20-2024 12:31 PM

Federal election coming soon.

westopher 12-20-2024 12:43 PM

Small town Canada has always had crazy drug issues. We called Lethbridge methbridge long before I graduated, and it wasn't just a clever name.
The drinking and driving and all the shit that comes along with those small city party scenes has probably gotten better than it was tbh.

Now all of that wishful thinking has been blown out of the water.

I'm surprised Doug Ford poll numbers are as high as they are.

Most places are voting out their incumbents no matter which way they lean (UK voting out incumbent conservatives), yet Doug Ford is doing ok?

westopher 12-20-2024 03:56 PM

There's something semi likeable about Doug ford. Even though he's a dunce, and a "business first" kind of conservative he doesn't spend time doing the racist/homophibic/sexist dog whistle shit people like PP and his loser crew get up to, and also was genuinely keen to support other branches of government when it came to pandemic response and such.
He is kinda of like a slimier Horgan in a sense. He's also been willing to eat shit on mistakes.
If the federal cons were more like that I'd be a lot more keen on them getting in, as much as I don't agree with the corporate pandering or the bro deals. If someone's gonna be greasy with money but not be a complete shit human outside that, that's very tolerable.

Curious, what's keeping you in San Antonio?

If I moved down there, it'd either be Austin or further south to Merida

Given the amount of scandals big and small that Ontario has seen through, I am really surprised as well that Doug Ford is still polling strong.

To me, he is a lot more than just being greasy. The Greenbelt scandal is a BIG DEAL! Yes, at the end of the day, he reversed course, but the amount of questionable stuff that was involved in that scandal have unquestionably brought the whole ordeal into the corruption category as opposed to mere corporate pandering or the bro deals.

And then there is the fact that this type of thing -- although at a smaller scale -- keeps repeating. The Science World BS. The Service Canada BS. The liquor sale BS. It's literally one thing after another. At some point, I would have thought that people are gonna say enough is enough. The folksy charm would only carry him so far. But no -- there are still enough Ontarians supporting him. I cannot understand why.

Hondaracer 12-20-2024 05:06 PM

Doug actually stood up for Canada and Trumps 51st state remarks where as Turd has been silent

^ They speak the same language. Both are fat bullying repugnant foul mouthed corrupt white guys.

I did think he did the best job in the beginning of the pandemic of being a leader though.

JDMDreams 12-20-2024 09:43 PM

I was reading up on Jagmeet and on his wikipedia page this entry made me lol just for being so random:

"In a November 2017 episode of the TVOntario series Political Blind Date, Singh was paired with former Toronto City Councillor and then-future Premier of Ontario Doug Ford. The pair explored different forms of transportation, with Singh taking Ford on a downtown Toronto bicycle ride while Ford drove Singh along the dedicated streetcar right-of-way on St. Clair Avenue.[137] Ford said of the experience that the two became friends, and Singh said Ford was "very warm and friendly".[138] Jagmeet Singh is an avid cyclist and owns six designer bicycles.[139]"

We had to settle on a place that made sense for both the lady and myself.

I work remotely so if I was down here solo, I wouldn't even bother with the US, I'd likely be in PV or Merida right now.

My GF is a nurse so we had to choose a place that had a travel contract for her that fit, which happened to be San Antonio.

This is likely our last foray into Texas though, she hasn't been a fan of the state for various reasons. Next year it'll be Phoenix or somewhere in Hawaii, have a second place I can utilize in Phoenix, and I prefer that state over Texas by a long shot.

Tech grifters are coming to Canada. Kevin O'Leary is planing to built the worlds largest AI data centre in Alberta. The province with some of the highest electric rates in Canada. It's going to use about 40% of Alberta's power. Alberta's has already seen brown outs and black outs do to power shortages. Daniel Smith is really pumped for this.

EvoFire 12-22-2024 08:49 PM

^ That doesn't make any sense if what you say is true.

ppl are building large data centers and mining operations in Iceland for the cheap power.

Well oleary is a scam artist and smith is an idiot. Mach made in heaven. He is going to ask for a ton of government handouts.

He wants to built it in bum fuck nowhere. Good luck getting anyone to move there. Good luck getting approval from the natives. Good luck getting the actual GPU's required. Musk had to beg Jenson Wong for more GPU's over dinner.

I bet Oleary knows dick all about AI.

Where they’d actually come together, according to the map in the video, is a parcel of land near Highway 40, more than half an hour from the bustling metropolis of Grande Prairie. It will have access to some nearby stranded gas assets, which could theoretically be used to provide some of the electricity that the facility would consume. But at full capacity, it would require 7.5 gigawatts of power, which is almost 40 per cent of what the entire Alberta grid can currently provide — and that’s with increasingly frequent brownouts and some of the highest electricity prices in Canada.

68style 12-22-2024 09:41 PM

Just another guy who moves from one grift to another... burning natural gas is carbon neutral? Unlimited free power? Wow where do we sign up been waiting for free unlimited power for so long as the human race... and suddenly it's available for an AI centre! Amazing.

Yah all the best and brightest want to live 45 minutes south of a shit town near the BC border northwest of Edmonton. The "bustling metropolis of Grande Prairie"????

Does this look like a bustling metropolis?

Yah, kudos to him, he's teflon.

That was just unnecessary, the guy is obviously on holidays, it's Christmas, New Year ... c'mon Karen, you get the Eff out of BC and go back to Alberta!
