Yeah it's a weird place. I lived there for a year and I knew it was rough when a cabbie gave me a lift for free when he heard me say I was going to the nearest bus stop because "you'll get stabbed over there"

Well yeah a major port city is going to be more dangerous than a ferry terminal town where the average age is 70.

A lot of problems in Nanaimo come from drug addicts who have moved here from other cities. We have multiple lower barrier housing projects. 2 are gated and you can't see whats going on inside. Those get a lot of calls. You also have a lot of theft. Honda makes Nanaimo seem to be some super dangerous place but it's not.

Small town Canada has always had crazy drug issues. We called Lethbridge methbridge long before I graduated, and it wasn't just a clever name.
The drinking and driving and all the shit that comes along with those small city party scenes has probably gotten better than it was tbh.

At the provincial level, I'm sure the (federal) NDP agreeing to vote down the Libs is also causing headaches for Doug Ford. He was at least partially banking on voter ignorance to support the Conservative brand, and hold an early provincial election before the federal one takes place. Now all of that wishful thinking has been blown out of the water.
I'm surprised Doug Ford poll numbers are as high as they are.
Most places are voting out their incumbents no matter which way they lean (UK voting out incumbent conservatives), yet Doug Ford is doing ok?

There's something semi likeable about Doug ford. Even though he's a dunce, and a "business first" kind of conservative he doesn't spend time doing the racist/homophibic/sexist dog whistle shit people like PP and his loser crew get up to, and also was genuinely keen to support other branches of government when it came to pandemic response and such.
He is kinda of like a slimier Horgan in a sense. He's also been willing to eat shit on mistakes.
If the federal cons were more like that I'd be a lot more keen on them getting in, as much as I don't agree with the corporate pandering or the bro deals. If someone's gonna be greasy with money but not be a complete shit human outside that, that's very tolerable.

I honestly am looking forward to coming back home. I love the warm weather (t-shirts and shorts in December), but you definitely start to appreciate what we have back home, and what we take for granted that isn't here.
Curious, what's keeping you in San Antonio?
If I moved down there, it'd either be Austin or further south to Merida
as much as I don't agree with the corporate pandering or the bro deals. If someone's gonna be greasy with money but not be a complete shit human outside that, that's very tolerable.
Given the amount of scandals big and small that Ontario has seen through, I am really surprised as well that Doug Ford is still polling strong.
To me, he is a lot more than just being greasy. The Greenbelt scandal is a BIG DEAL! Yes, at the end of the day, he reversed course, but the amount of questionable stuff that was involved in that scandal have unquestionably brought the whole ordeal into the corruption category as opposed to mere corporate pandering or the bro deals.
And then there is the fact that this type of thing -- although at a smaller scale -- keeps repeating. The Science World BS. The Service Canada BS. The liquor sale BS. It's literally one thing after another. At some point, I would have thought that people are gonna say enough is enough. The folksy charm would only carry him so far. But no -- there are still enough Ontarians supporting him. I cannot understand why.
