This is about as positive and good a speech from PP as I've ever seen but it's still not very good though I can see how it does appeal to some folks. 75% of it sounds pretty good but the tone isn't great (he's so shouty and he has one speed, zero gravitas). His constant repetition about taxes is tiresome - like everything will be solved by tax cuts.

Even back in Dec 2024 when there was widespread speculation that Ford would call an early election, there had never been any doubts that Ford was well on his way to secure yet another majority gov. The question was mostly a matter of how big that majority would remain, and who would win the race for the title of the Official Opposition.

My only surprise was that the Liberals did as poorly as they did, and their popular vote suggested that they were very inefficient in their vote spread -- almost 30% popular vote vs NDP's 18.5%, but only 14 seats vs the NDP's 27.

I mean it's been his whole shtick since he became leader - hanging with the Proud Boys, interviews with Jordan Peterson, being a convoy supporter. He's been a lighter, not corrupt version of Danielle Smith alignment wise. His political slogans are practically stolen from Trump - the Liberals have easy material on this front to paint him as a MAGA guy just based on how his speeches and slogans are such a close match to Trump's.

It's only in the last 6 weeks that it's been blowing up on him and he's now going around trying to toe the lie between keeping his MAGA support while defending Canada (witness him being the last leader to come out against 51st state nonsense, he was toeing the Trump line about it being a drug and border security issue when it was total nonsense).

It's only a matter of degrees of alignment with Trump/MAGA, not whether he's aligned himself with him. A sizeable amount of his support comes from MAGA-land and he's courted them vigorously. Maybe he's doing it only to keep them onboard, maybe that's who he really is (I don't think that's the case).

And thus I still lean (slightly) towards the Cons winning at this point but this is a huge change compared to 8 weeks ago - I think Carney, at the time, was signing up so he could lose. Now he's legitimately able to think about winning and the winds are blowing for him.

You aren't really making a convincing case that he is pro-MAGA. He didn't really say much in support of Trump. Its the contrary.

As an aside, Jordan Peterson is a very interesting person. I had him as a prof when I went to UofT for a psych elective course I took.

The election is ultimately about the economy. The liberals will lose because their track record stinks and carney doesn't really diverge much from trudeau's positions.

If it hangs out with the ducks, talks like the ducks, supports the ducks then either he is a duck or he really wants to be liked by the ducks. I mean Danielle Smith also doesn't say much in support of Trump (nor does Wayne Gretzky) but no one is of any conclusion beyond saying that they are hard core MAGAs. Gretzky's silence speaks volumes about where he stands and so has PP's weak response to Trump's threats (until the last week or so). PP may not be a total simp for MAGA like JD Vance (or most of Trump's cabinet) but he most certainly MAGA-curious at the very least.

The "echo chamber" I'm in seems to have a number of Cons supporters upset that Carney is stealing their ideas - namely killing the carbon tax and dropping the GST on new homes - PP had to pull out a new version of his axe the tax idea (kill the industrial carbon tax) in response.

To say he doesn't diverge much from Trudeau's positions is just lazy analysis. Carney's a bit of a blank slate right now (it's why it's so easy to like him right now) because he hasn't released many of his policy positions (you can glean a lot of it from his book though) - he's been called a Conservative in Liberal clothing, he's been called a Communist (there's some Comrade Carney photoshops floating around), he's been called a clone of Trudeau, and he's been called a Trump's lackey (by Singh). I've seen lefties say they won't vote for him b/c he worked at Goldman and I've seen righties say they don't like him b/c he's a staunch believer in climate change.
