What do you do for work? Genuinely curious what this magical job that commands respect is. If you aren't a doctor or a firefighter or a nurse or paramedic I don't think whatever it is gives you grounds to shit on any career paths.
Also most people in those jobs aren't big enough pieces of shit to think they are some god tier above everyone, so assume you aren't in the business of making the world a better place.

A guy shitting on arts degrees, notably communications, from a guy that can't even spell religion correctly :lol

BA degrees are still shit tier degrees.

Do you understand the numbers you see on line are for the least skilled in that field.

My Brother ha a BA and is an accountant. This is what google says.

Quote:

In British Columbia, the average salary for an accountant is around $66,303 per year, with entry-level positions starting at around $47,500 and experienced workers potentially earning up to $79,462
My brothers first job over 20 years ago paid more than that because he was one of the top grads. With his shitty BA degree he makes more in a year than many make in there whole entire lives.

WokeScene calling ConScene idiots
ConScene calling WokeScene morons

WokeScene has an easy, rich life because they conform and do what the system tells them
ConScene has an easy, rich life because they conform and do the very minimum to resist the system but go along with it anyways because "muh voting conservative"

Meanwhile the actual people who do the effort, like myself, are extremely punished for speaking out and cannot even afford to survive in this climate of hyper-conformity. From my 3rd place, it is like watching a bunch of handicapped people having a slapfight. Both sides are completely ridiculous.

I'm imagining an alternate timeline where VRY has a Time Machine and goes backs and convinces every single future PM and future Bank of Canada governor (every single has an Arts degree) from the 20th and 21st century that the Arts degrees they are all working on are bullshit and that they need to switch to something better like being a plumber or line cook.

We then end up as a white version of North Korea.

whitev70r 03-30-2025 04:36 PM

So, back on point ... who or how do we vote in the Vancouver municipal byelection for 2 councillor seats? Put someone non ABC in there to keep them accountable?

68style 03-30-2025 04:49 PM

I mean he’s not completely wrong, I didn’t know what to do with myself out of high school and my dad said I had to go to university wouldn’t let me go to BCiT so I did and got a BA out of force pretty much.

I don’t think it was super helpful in getting a job, but it all comes down to the individual how you present yourself and adapt and think through things. I wouldn’t change my path either because I met all my best friends to this day at university through the car club there and got into racing, etc.

I’ll basically be retired with no debts in my early 50’s so I can’t complain about where it all got me. I’m sure there’s lots of burnouts too but it’s not a mark of the devil or stamp of failure lol

Anyone but Colleen Hardwick. Loves to make racist dog whistles and vehemently fights against housing. She's a disgrace to her father's name (he was a well respected councillor who now has a street named after him).

A CA when he graduated but I think now it falls under the CPA designation.

FYI, an Arts degree includes (but not limited to) these shitty fields of study:

- Anthropology
- Applied Legal studies
- Criminology
- Economics (Mark Carney's major)
- English
- French
- Geography
- Gerontology
- History
- International Studies
- Journalism
- Labour Studies
- Linguistics
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Public Policy
- Social Work
- Urban Studies

to be fair, quite a few leaders in the worlds most successful companies aren't really skilled in what the company does. It's their ability to bring skilled people together that makes them succeed. The actual skilled workers make amazing engineers/technicians/etc but make horrible leaders.

For the record people who get one of these "crappy" history, science or health science degrees end up, on average, making substantially more money in their lifetimes than those who only have a high school diploma. They don't, in general, work retail jobs, or get "forced" into teaching because they couldn't find work (teaching is a pretty solid career - they make pretty decent money starting at $60k getting up to $109k in the GVRD plus a healthy pension - https://bcpsea.bc.ca/wp-content/uplo...rch-1-2024.pdf)

Someone with a health related Bachelor's degree makes ~$1.4m more than a high school grad ($2.4m). The crappy social science grads (like me) make $776k more than high school grad and even humanities grads make $425k more.

While there are the odd shitty teachers (like this guy: https://www.burnabynow.com/local-new...dents-10428425), I've found the vast majority to be at least good at their jobs and many great. I don't think you'd find that quality of work being produced if they merely were just punching a clock, a lot of these people love (maybe just like) teaching. I had some incredible teachers who touched me (in good ways!) and others; their impact on me were deep and lasting - if they were just there for the summer break they would have fooled me and all their students.

Thanks for the stats. I never implied teaching was a shitty job, it’s just definitely not the first choice for a lot of majors. I definitely know having a degree is better than no degree, but there are far superior degrees, job opportunity wise, compared to the ones mentioned regarding arts, etc… and ya’ll implying I think teachers are shitty. Which isn’t the case as I had way more good teachers than bad ones. I wouldn’t know any better I’m just a loser.

Everyone here can argue politics all they want. But the sad reality is that our vote has the same weight as my unemployed 19 year old cousin that sent me his resume with a meme cat on it to print out.

Changed: “your” to “our”, smh

I dunno how many people would find this offensive, but a recent incident by the sitting Don Valley North Liberal MP, Paul Chiang, has been extremely offensive to me, and Carney's response to the incident is absurd and infuriating as well.

The incident can be more fully described here:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/car...hina-1.7497765

but the TL;DR version is:

- Conservative candidate Joe Tay is a former Hong Kong resident who has a HKD $1M / Cdn $184k bounty on his head by the Communist Hong Kong gov

- Chiang suggested that people can turn Tay to the Chinese consulate and collect the bounty

- Chiang has since apologized for the comment, but Tay rejected it

- Carney refuses to expel Chiang from the party, and Chiang continues to run in his riding as a Liberal

The incident and Carney's response in themselves are obviously very troubling. The bigger issue is -- it gives tangible reasons for the public and the Cons to further question how close Carney / the Liberals' ties are to the Communist Chinese gov. There has already been reports about Carney's meeting some Chinese central bank big shot in late 2024 and securing a sizable financing deal for Brookfield. And now incidents like this add more fuel to the accusations that Carney / Libs can be effecitvely influenced by Communist China.

Carney has obviously categorically denied the accusations of influence, but the events themselves directly challenge the credibility of that denial. Being too friendly to China has always been something the Liberals get attacked for, and this just adds more evidence to those accusations.

That is exactly how voting should be, everyone's votes being equal because everyone is equal. It's a sad reality that you are unable to see that.

I hadn't paid any attention to this till this morning - one of the missing details is that he apparently said it 2 months ago and only apologised for it once he was called out for it.

I think he should resign or be fired and I think Carney's wrong to keep him on board. I don't have a problem with Carney's defence (teachable moment, lifetime of service, etc) but I don't think Carney's reading the situation right here.

I haven't followed what China's been doing to influence Canadian politics so I can't judge or offer an opinion on it so while I think it's not a good look for Carney or the Liberals (there's smoke) I don't actually believe Carney is much for letting China influence him personally (no fire). Maybe the Liberal party itself though is getting influenced though.

EvoFire 03-31-2025 09:21 AM

^ I've been meaning to look into that but haven't had time.

It's great that you bring that up because someone is gonna be like left good, libtards, blah blah blah.

I don't have much information, but off the top of my head....
Depending on how that particular riding is doing, swapping candidates may not be ideal when the Libs are trying to win every single seat they can in what might be a very close race - it could signal Carney not being strong morally
Carney may be strong economically, but he might not be as well versed in the Pacific side of the politics considering he's played more on the east coast/Europe. Definitely a weak point moving forward as trade tensions are ramping up with China.

Either ways, it doesn't look good.

Taking a step back, it's funny how things align in this world.
Pro democracy groups in HK typically is very pro-Trump and for a very specific reason, because Trump is hard on China. The groups fly a democracy flag but at the same time Trump is an attack on democracy.

supafamous 03-31-2025 09:23 AM

This is an excerpt from an opinion column in the G&M that came out after Carney defended Chiang:

Quote:

To joke about China’s human-rights abuses is bad enough. To not realize it was outrageous until you are called out for it two months later by the Toronto Association for Democracy in China, as Mr. Chiang was last week, is laughable. His retrospective regret that his comments were “deplorable and a complete lack of judgment,” and his later direct apology to Mr. Tay, are without credibility.

But his so-called joke was not the worst offence. That came just before it, when – based on one reported translation of the comment – he suggested that electing a man wanted by Beijing in a riding that is majority ethnic Chinese would cause a “great controversy.”
