Why not a compromise?
Introduce private option to offer competition.
BC already has a private option for comprehensive. If B.C. allowed private companies to offer basic insurance they would just cherry pick the drivers with the best record, ICBC would be stuck with all the other drivers increasing cost for everyone who can't get private. Ever had a speeding ticket?

Right. So the drivers with clean records would pay less.
I see your point.

It's great for people who have no claims history and no ticket history... but get a ticket (even just ONE ticket!) or have an affinity for auto-cross or a particularly rare and valuable type of vehicle and you're at the mercy of them deciding they just don't want to sell you a policy anymore. Do some research on it in the USA how companies spy on their customers to see if they are doing risky stuff like auto-cross (Wooo! So risky!) or modifying their vehicles in any way and then blacklisting them.
I've mentioned these example in other threads, but I'll say them again because things like this are a big reason I like having ICBC. In Oregon an insurance company found out that a guy did a rally cross event with one of his cars. They then cancelled the policy for that car, his daily driver, his wifes car, and their house. In Quebec a buddy spent ages trying to be able to drive his RHD car when he moved there for work because no insurance company wanted to cover it.
Personally I'm willing to pay a little extra to know I'm not going to have to deal with bullshit like that, or having to spend a bunch of time comparing insurers to make sure there isn't some fine print that lets them weasel out of paying a claim. And like westopher I'll pay a little extra now knowing that the same system made it so I could actually afford to drive when I was a broke teenager.

Welfare I agree with private companies being allowed in for sure. I’m not arguing that ICBC can be the only option. Simply stating that a private system isn’t without its flaws, and an example of ICBC bringing a positive.

If it were black and white, there'd be nothing to discuss.
Looking at all the pros and cons of both systems and then weighing them is a logical formula to draw conclusion.

And it just occurred to me that this is an automotive enthusiast site lol.
So there will be a bias.
But the general population who use their vehicles strictly as a mode of transportation, and play by "the rules" would probably be keen on private.

Instead of worry about other maybe JT should focus on our citizens first? We still have 2 Canadians detain in China without any charges being laid, without the right to see a lawyer or rarely have Canadians officials helping them. Oh and they are being integrated.
Or maybe JT is doing this to avoid dealing with real issues which he doesn't have ability to solve.

Yes, I've read about this happening in California & NJ as well. The insurance company snooped through the social media postings for one guy and saw a picture of his car on track and so they cancelled all his policies (including home), the reason, "In the agents words, "We only insure regular, drive-to-work cars."". SMH
Right. So the drivers with clean records would pay less.

maybe only the top 5 or 10% will get cheaper insurance everyone else would pay more. You're over 65 no private insurance, you had a speeding ticket 10 years ago no private insurance etc.

I have zero sympathy for this girl.
Other women get no help because they don't have smartphone and social media account?
Gtfo...
She was facing a death sentence if no one helped her. But I agree with you we as a country should be helping more people that don't have social media access.

You really have no idea how government and diplomacy works do you!? Canadian diplomats along with officials at Global Affairs Canada have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure the release, and at the very least, lawyer visitations as well as consular support to the two detained Canadians. This isn't a case where Canada is dealing with some small developing nation where it can throw its weight around and apply pressure. Our country is basically at the whim of the Chinese authorities on this matter.
Hence, why we are applying pressure by reaching out to our allies for support so that we can create more noise on the issue and create bad publicity for China. Its our best bet at securing the results we seek as a country for the detained individuals.

Canadian political landscape is such a joke, I can't stand any of the party leaders.
He memorized talking points well; too bad they completely avoided the question he was asked multiple times.
I honestly have no idea who I’ll vote for. Even May, who I was on board with, has really pissed me off this term (e.g. not running a candidate in Singh’s riding as a “political courtesy” because he’s a federal party leader. What happened to democracy? If the people in that riding want him to represent them, they’ll vote for him. They shouldn’t be forced to vote for him because every other party steps aside).
Now Karen Wang wants back in, asking the Liberals to reconsider letting her run in next month's Burnaby South byelection — despite handing in her resignation Wednesday.
But in a statement, the Liberal Party of Canada says it has refused Wang's request for a second chance.
"As mentioned yesterday, recent online comments by Karen Wang are not aligned with the values of the Liberal Party of Canada. The Liberal Party has accepted her resignation as a candidate and she will not represent the Liberal Party in the Burnaby South byelection."
She clearly had very little understanding on how democracy works. How low does one have to be to be playing the ethnicity card? And to be asking to be back in immediately after you resigned?! I know everyone deserves a second chance, but SHOW that you are worth it before asking.
Democracy is about people electing candidates to represent them. You want people vote? Tell us WHY you deserve my vote? Like I give a single fuck whether you are Chinese, Indian, Sikh, Black or whatever color/race/ethnicity. All I care is about whether your ideology is in line with mine.
If she's serious, she should take some time off, do a lot of volunteering in the community, get to know your constituents and your community by talking and engaging with them.
And seriously... do some work. I was shocked I couldn't even find her Wiki page. How are your voters suppose to know you if you don't even show up on Google search? (well, now she does... all news about how she had to resign and crying back like a 5yrs old). Make it happen and show your expertise, experience, and ideas for your community and let them know. I did some googling for it and gave up after page 4.

Damn what a gong-show. Its almost reverse entitlement. I'm Chinese, chinese people should vote for me regardless of my views, political prowess, and how idiotic I am that I can't even hide my overt racism. SMH.
It is possible her comment was misinterpreted or taken out of context.
As it was translated into English, things can get lost.
I don't know whether that is the case. But it is possible.
