How many times have judges given out sentences that are more lenient than crown council even suggests?
So the govt. appointed council pushing for a term based on precedent says this should be the punishment, and the judge actively reduces the sentence based on their opinion.
Don’t act like that doesn’t happen all the time.

What are you basing that on? Do you have legal knowledge on how they got to that? I'm not saying it doesnt. But I'm about as sure that it doesnt as you are that it does.

BC judges just made a 29% pay increase over a 4 year span with most making $340,000 or more a year now
| That is a lot of money.
Don't think there is any dispute here. But the other side of the coin is the awful shit they have to deal with . Can you imagine sitting on a case in family court knowing you have to make a judgement that will alter the life of a innocent , unprotected child with no agency of there own and know that whatever you do will not be enough and ultimately there is no good choice.
Don't get me wrong. I agree with your frustrations on the lack of political will that it takes to fix this system. I only point out its not as easy as it seems. I whole heartedly believe everyone in the system from judges to prosecutors to defense counsel even to the politicians would like to fix it .
We've seen things like mandatory minimums get quashed in supreme court. It takes away a judges ability to be independent. We've seen things like safe supply be a complete failure. The "catch and release revolving door " is something no one wants.
I don't have answers i only say its more complicated than it looks and more especially more complicated than the media makes it out to be.
btw were you aware the crown prosecutors and few others ( cant recall who ) in govenrment automatically get the same percentage raise as the judges? Its in there contract.

Well yea.. you make good points but much like a police officer, fire fighter, etc. for a judge, THAT is their job. That is what they are paid for.
It’s naive to thing it’s only on judges when the system as a whole is so broken but certainly they are a key cog in the wheel.

They have to make rulings based on precedent or else it gets appealed and likely changed at further cost.
They can’t make statement rulings suddenly, they have to go with equivalent sentences to what has been levied before.
Making it sound like they’re on a mission to ruin shit or on the take somehow? From who? What’s the benefit?

Yea not sure what business can just drop $10m like that.
There (are) no repercussions against repeat violent and chronic offenders,” said Mahlman. “And something needs to change.”
The same scenario Mahlman said, is playing out in downtown cores across the province.
“We’re at a crisis point,” he said. “And if the government doesn’t act soon, we’ll lose our downtowns, just like what we’ve seen in the U.S..”

Pathetic and PP is only concerned about the carbon tax while Doug Ford is out there telling Trump Canada isn't for sale and we won't back down.

I think if Canadians end up fairly aligned on this to shop locally we are going to end up spending more money, but ending up with much better products where possible as well as that money staying in our economy.
Certain segments of the economy could get a boost. Food, booze, clothing are a few. People are going to see the worth in that once they get a little push to use those products they may not have before.

There's no way to separate ourselves entirely, but do what you can where you can. 25 million people doing a little bit is better than a million doing a lot.

Turd made an announcement today about 25 percent tariffs in response to Cheeto's tariffs: https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2025/0...rting-tuesday/
Canada is imposing its own 25 per cent tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods after U.S. President Donald Trump slapped Canada with 25 per cent tariffs on all goods and 10 per cent tariffs on oil, natural gas and electricity.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the tariffs will take effect on $30 billion worth of goods starting Tuesday with a further $125 billion worth of products being taxed 21 days later.
Trudeau elected to go ahead with retaliatory tariffs even though Trump’s order includes a mechanism to escalate the rates if Canada retaliates against the U.S.
I also heard Turd mentioning in his announcement while listening to news1130 radio that Canada may use "non-tariff" options in response to Cheeto's tariffs.
He mentioned critical minerals.
Non-tariff options include scaling back exports of critical minerals like lithium to the U.S.
America needs critical minerals to make more semi conductor chips and other electronics? Good luck with that haha.
Cheeto started this trade war with Canada, Mexico, and China.
Turd will respond in kind to the American tariffs.
Turd also mentioned in his announcement that Canadians should carefully read labels of the products that they are buying.
"Buy Canadian".
As Canadians, we will not let Dumbass 47 bully our country.
Fuck Trump!!

I just facepalming after reading some of the comments on YouTube of Trudeau's announcement of retaliating tariffs saying he just messed up Canada. Blah blah blah etc .
I'm no fan of the libs and Turd, but to all the P.P conservative fanboys out there, if he was PM, I'm sure he would do the same thing too and not let Trump push us around.

There's a tonne of people out there now that are just like the opposition party... it does not matter what the sitting PM does, they will rail on about it. He could be telling them all they get free $ from the heavens tomorrow and they'd find a way to get angry about it. "Oh yah where was this free money before huh? Keeping it all for yourself I bet blah blah blah"
Useless societal contributors.
