The reason why the federal, and provincial, governments are 100% responsible for what this country is going through, and the cliff we're all collectively driving off of... is that government sets the tone for culture through their huge payments to art and media. Remember the 600+ million dollar bailout before COVID?

It's two separate issues. Ideally yeah I'd like it if we had options that weren't just rich idiots, but we don't. But since that's all we get, my second concern is how someone who has only had public sector jobs ends up with a net worth far higher than should be possible with their income. Especially when they can't pass a security clearance check with CSIS.

The guy I grew up with a career criminal with 30+ convictions and multiple violent offenses is released on bail, in less than a month after being released commits multiple home invasions, assaults 2 people, choked out a cop, then beat the fuck out of a nurse at peace arch.

That… kinda sounds like a bail/criminal justice system issue to me no?

You convict someone outside of precedent and he appeals and he wins and then it’s a tonne of wasted time and money maybe even ends up worse than before.

You can’t just pretend preceeent doesn’t exist or matter. Where we are at today is a culmination of 100+ years of government laws and court cases.

They should start with bail reforms… but you can’t just undo precedent.

I agree with that. If it weren't for the "extenuating circumstances" when looking at indigenous violent offenders then 11 deaths of indigenous people in the Saskatchewan stabbing spree wouldn't have happened.
I'm completely fine if they want to take things into account for systematic failures when it comes to thefts or drug offences or whatever, but the threat to the public is what matters and that doesn't change based on the "why it happened" when it comes to violent offenders.

I forgot the exact time frame this was, while Turd was still in the PM seat, the Liberals actually pushed through a reverse onus provision for bail, where the accused must show why they should be granted bail. IMO in the overall grand scheme of bail reform, this is nothing more than a baby step, but it is still beats not taking any steps.

In a podcast that I had listened to, the legal expert guest speaker gave me the impression that it is the legal community that wants to proceed slowly and very carefully on bail reform such that the rights of the accused is not being violated. I suspect they wanted this because if the changes are not done carefully, the federal gov is gonna get sued for violating the Constitution, and then the bail reforms are gonna be rendered meaningless.

As a layperson, I am far more in favour of just tossing somebody's a$$ into detention if it is the X number of times the guy has been caught and found guilty on non-trival charges. Just make X reasonable -- 15? 20? 30? Screw your constitutional rights! At some point, society needs to stop giving these repeat offenders the benefit of the doubt when they have clearly shown themselves to be unworthy of having that benefit.

I'm pretty sure this has been brought up here before, but along with bail reform, both the federal and provincial govs are gonna need to cough up a lot more money to bolster the capacity of the courts and correctional facilities. Otherwise, the court and correctional systems are only gonna get overwhelmed even more than they have now. But doing that is HUGELY expensive, so the political parties are too chicken shxt to actually have the will and the guts to act on and see through this change.
