A surprise end to the case of the Huawei CFO Ms Meng and the eventual return of the two Michaels to Canada?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It appears there could be a surprise end to a case that has put Vancouver in the spotlight, according to Reuters. Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou will appear virtually in court in Brooklyn to address fraud charges against her.

Reuters says she’ll agree to what’s called a deferred prosecution which would put an end to the case and could mean she could be free in less than 24 hours.

If she pleads guilty, which she is expected to do, Crown attorneys in Vancouver could move to stay the extradition proceedings against her, according to CBC News.

Meng was arrested by the RCMP at YVR at the request of the U.S. back in 2018 and she’s been fighting extradition ever since. She has remained under house arrest in her Vancouver mansion.

The results of today’s court developments could mean freedom for the two men, according to an immigration lawyer.

“If we can close this case, send Ms. Meng back to China, get our two Michaels back to Canada, everyone wins. And I think that’s going to be the result of today’s proceedings in Brooklyn and Vancouver,” immigration lawyer Richard Kurland said Friday morning
.

However he hopes the federal government will come up with the cash to pay for counselling sessions for Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig considering they’ve been behind bars in China for more than one-thousand days.

Honestly if I were Meng, I would not want to return to China. In the history of the Chinese Communist Party, CCP has never treated any of their captured spies well when they are released and returns to China. Besides, other than the ankle brace and having a security entourage follow her everywhere she goes, she is basically free to do whatever the heck she wants in the Lower Mainland. If she were to return to China, I would not at all be surprised to see her being put under security surveillance, and "security surveillance" takes on a whole different meaning in China than it does in Canada.

First of all, calling Meng a spy is questionable. Is her company engaged in economic espionage, does she have links to CCP intelligence apparatus - maybe, etc. But, calling her a spy in the truest sense of the word is a little misleading.

Second, this isn't some run of the mill Chinese citizen. She is the daughter of Ren Zhengfei who is the founder of one of China's most prominent economic champions - Huawei, and she holds the position of CFO and Chairwoman. If anything, she will probably be lauded as a hero back in China for having endured the difficulties of confinement at the hands of the West.

Everyone wins?

Do the 2 Michael’s feel that way? Doing hard time and basically being tortured?

Should have thrown Meng in the Fraser Valley Women’s Corrections Facility and see how she did… instead of shopping at Holt Renfrew and closing restaurants down on our dime

They're not gonna release the two Michael's, not for sometime yet I imagine (because as China wants you to believe, their arrests have nothing to do with meng)

Canada is too fkn soft, look at how well they've treated meng and allowed the process to be drawn out

Yet the Canadian fashion "almost billionaire" Peter Nygard has been sitting in a cell waiting for his US extradition trial (SA claims by former models) his lawyers even offered the same style security detail round the clock monitoring to be allowed bail, but they wouldn't budge with him

I am not saying Meng is a spy, but what I am saying is, we can look at how CPP treats people whom they consider might have leaked (Chinese) state secrets to foreign states, and were subsequently released and returned to China. In CCP history, people like that have never been treated kindly by the Party.

So that means we gotta ask ourselves -- how much involvement and ties do Huawei have with the CCP and with the PLA (People's Liberation Army)? And how much does Meng know, given that she is the CFO of Huawei, and the daughter of the founder? If I were a high ranking CCP leader operating under the typical CCP mindset, I would assume Meng has already given up some of the state secrets that she has been privy to, and treat her accordingly.

Also, in the latest directives from Boss Xi, he has made it abundantly clear that nobody is exempted from prosecution if they do not follow the Party's orders. (The exact quote goes more along the lines of "there will be no Iron Hatted Kings", a reference to Chinese historical royal family members or high ranking officers who are often exempted from severe punishments. Prior to these latest directives, it was customary for the CCP to not pursue charges or punishments to anyone -- including their family members -- who has made it into the Politburo, the core power circle consisting of up to 9 members (I think?). But at least according to the recent directives, that is no longer the case.

But hey, I am not Meng. Maybe she'd still think she'd be safer to return to China. Or maybe she doesn't have a choice to not return to China. I totally expect her to return to China, but if I were her, I definitely wouldn't want to do that.

If it hasn't been obvious enough, the fate of the 2 Michaels are showcase examples of the risks that exists when dealing with Communist China. Especially under Emperor Xi, it operates as a dictatorship, and every bad thing that you can imagine and associate with dictatorships can apply, with arbitrary law enforcement and kangaroo courts being the norm.

It's also a grimace inducing reminder of how our standards for people are so much nicer... which is fine when it's all relative within the confines of our whole country... everyone is treated the same, in theory, regardless of race/creed.............. but when you have similar situations in 2 countries with vastly different standards of where you spend your "innocent until proven guilty" time, then it becomes immensely frustrating since we can't just bend our standards to match for that 1 person from a different country just because their country is an asshole.

Canada is not "bending over backwards" - America is dropping the charges. Extradition dropped, and their charges against her will be totally dropped next year.

People, read.

In case nobody has noticed, politics have changed in America since she was arrested.

Thanks, but not sure if people will stop stating their opinion as fact despite evidence pointing out the opposite.

This wasn't even our problem to begin with. We are just US's bitch at the start of all this. Inb4 politics stances with the US. If the tables were turned the US probably would've just laughed at us and said it's not their problem.
