Expedition trucks - where to get more info?
 

So I ran across an expedition truck with EU plate the other day, the gent (a retired Spanish guy) told me he was doing his trip from East coast Canada to Alaska and now plans of going all the way down to Ushuaia as part of his America tour.

The truck was fucking badass (based on a MAN truck). I mean it was 6x6 and looked unstoppable. Which I regret now for not running back to cars to grab my phone for some pics.

Any CDN or even American source to know more about them? Did some googling but mostly EU stuff.

It may not be exactly what you're going for, but I bought an overland truck from Foley in the UK.

They were absolutely great, and the vehicle we bought did 6 months in Africa on a lot of brutal unpaved roads and dirt paths with next to no problems. We had one strut blow on us, (which is why they put two springs and struts per side in the rear) and had it replaced in their shop in Zambia.

We came across some of the big 6x6 trucks in some of the parks. While they are awesome, they drink fuel, and to be honest their size would have prevented them from getting to a lot more places then it enabled them to get to.

So if you're looking to get places, get a defender, a g-wagon, or an old land cruiser. If you want to show off your big dick get a 6x6 and a 400mm lens

Saw a similar one (possibly the same one) in Ladysmith last year at the Shell station. It's huge!

^might be, that was this past may, it had Swiss plates. There can't be that many of them running around

Saw a massive Earthroamer when I was on the Liard Highway (joins Yellowknife to Fort Nelson) couple summers ago. Would see them every now and then in Yellowknife as well, kitted out overlanders with EU plates.

i think i saw one of these last summer on the sea to sky. it was going the other way and i didn't know what it was at the time other than the giant MAN logo on the front grille. it was light grey, and ahd euro plates on it but i couldn't see from where it came from.

also saw one canada day long weekend 2017 on the sea to sky heading north. with so many sightings, i wonder if its local to vancouver?

there are some really cool overland setups out there but most of them are in europe and australia, built of mercedes unimogs and some 2.5 ton military trucks. we don't really do that kind of thing the same way in north america

Why?

The VPD would have a hay day with this truck. I love these overland trucks and enjoy reading details of some of the journeys people get themselves into all over the world.

It's not about always getting to the end of the land I guess with these huge expedition trucks, but more like getting wherever the road would take you, paved, gravel or whatever makes up the road.

Dad was looking to pour together some funds to finance a panamericana trip few years down the road. Which I want to find THE vehicle to pull it off. Sure a land cruiser or Defender would take us to places as long as there's a way to squeeze a car into, but the idea was to drive anywhere while having a decent something to shelter us (for now the plan would be 3-6 heads, mainly me, my bro and my dad with my mom and wife/in-laws joining us on and off from certain points.

I figured we could spend less money on a Land Cruiser (or heck, even my dad's Lexus LX570) while towing something, but then again, with a 5th wheel or something towed, we wouldn't be having the accessibility that we'd hope to have by going with a smaller option.

Anyway, it's still very far off... not to mention these things cost an arm and a leg. But it's something I want to read while planning for our possible trip.
