I've cleaned the fridge out multiple times. Took every item out, cleaned off every jar and container, nothing has ever spilled in it, I pulled out all the shelves and scrubbed them clean, scrubbed the inside with a baking soda solution and it smells extremely weird.

We barely keep anything in it, just condiment containers, brita jug, juice, and vegetables that stay in there for only a few days before we use it all up. Any left over food that gets put in there in a container gets used up the next day as we really don't waste much food and only get what we need so things don't get forgotten and go bad. One day out of nowhere the fridge just started to stink! That's when I cleaned it. It smells good for a few weeks and then in one day BAM there's that weird smell again. I don't know how to describe the smell but it's gross. Nothing I've ever cooked has this smell or anything similar to it... I've cleaned the thing top to bottom and wtf fridge...you smell again?!? There's baking soda inside near the vent that circulates the air that gets replaced every month or so.

It came with our place and I had to download the manual for it to see if I'm missing something but I simply can't figure out why this smell is lingering around... I've seen similar models on their site that look exactly the same but the only difference I can see is that they have a removable air filter inside on the back.


Any suggestions on this? I'm not against removing everything, unplug it and pulling it out and leave the doors open for the day in hopes to air it out but at this point I don't even think that would help much.


Forgot to add - There is a ice maker in it that isn't hooked up to a water line. We didn't even know about it until a month or two after and it was in the on position which is now been off for a good 5 months now.

There may be an air filter in the fridge that could be changed.

Also try keeping the baking soda in the fridge, there is a specific baking soda that has a tear out area on the front that is made for fridge.

I have had the same issues, my wife swears the smell isn't there but I smelled it. Keeping the the baking soda in there helped out a lot.

We have one in our fridge, and we definitely do not change it every 30 days.

Yup, those are the baking soda packs I use. I think the box says to replace every 30 days. they're only a couple bucks so I do that. I was reading to cut those boxes open and spread it all across a baking sheet for more surface coverage and try that.

I'm trying to find answers through the manual but I don't see a replaceable air filter in this fridge. Opening up the door is like a smack to the face with this scent.

We have a similar LG fridge, I don't notice any smell from ours. Did you clean the gasket down the middle, between the two doors' that strip can get pretty dirty.

Cleaned it top to bottom.

Got a text from the gf saying she can faintly taste that smell in the ice cubes.. whatever it is it's able to go from the fridge to the freezer, which I had also pulled apart and cleaned. >.<

I'll be ripping it all apart again this weekend when I have the time...

LOL i swear mine is changed like once every 30 months but it's more that I completely forget it's in there than me not wanting to change it. With that said though I've never had any issues with smell in the fridge.

I change the water filter out on my fridge coz it was making weird noise. My mom swear there was a weird smell till I change it. Maybe try changing the water filter? BTW those things cost a lot lol. Mine cost like $50.

I'm sure theres a water filter somewhere since it has an ice maker, but its never been hooked up so I'm going to hold back on buying a new filter for that for now. Damn fridge...

If you're cool with Vancouver tap water and don't want to spend money on replacing water filters your whole life then buy a water filter bypass for the fridge. The part is cheap and depending could be as low as $20.

I had a similar issue, some ice cream trickled into the freezer vent. Unplug the fridge let it all defrost, empty out the water/drip tray in the bottom and plug back in. I do not use Baking Soda, use fresh ground coffee in a glass or plastic cup. You will notice the coffee will absorb the fridge smells and food will taste better, especially in the freezer make a huge difference with ice and ice cream. I change the coffee ground about every 2 or 3 months.

This sounds like a great plan. we love the cold fridge water but don't care about the filtration. I'm gonna look for one tonight.
