Road legal electric scooters

Long story short I'm trying to sort out who actually sells an electric scooter that's road legal here like a 49cc gas scooter is. Most of them seem to actually be electric assisted bikes but without the pedals (so not legal, and too slow). Per ICBC:

Limited-speed motorcycle definition

- Has no more than a 50 cubic cm engine displacement or 1.5 kilowatt motor rating
- Does not need clutching or shifting after the drive system is engaged
- Has a maximum speed on level ground of 70 km/h and weighs no more than 95 kilograms, excluding fuel and batteries
- Must have wheels that are 25.4 cm in diameter or more
MAC vs LSM: https://www.icbc.com/vehicle-registr...ric-bikes.aspx

I've found a few that are only sold in Europe, is there anything here that falls into this category or is it 49cc gas engines only?

I don't think they are street legal. From the ads I have seen they require no insurance or licence.

You’re right they don’t require insurance but they gotta be street legal. I have a ruckus and we rip around passing cops regularly. He got it because he lost his license so I’d imagine he would have made sure. That said I’m not 100% certain myself.

I thought they just need to have pedals and be speed limited to 16km/h or something like that.

I had a Motorino xpd. Bypassed the speed limiter and added lithium batteries. 58km/h all day lol

Ya he’s modded his and it moves pretty quick too. Not as fast as the Ruck though

The ones that need no license and insurance need to have pedals that you use up to 3km/h and be limited to 32km/h, along with a bunch of other stuff, and then they count as an MAC. There's loads of those but being in bike lanes limited to 32 isn't what we're after, an electric LSM would be in the same category as a Ruckus (need a drivers license and insurance, no pedaling, good up to 70, etc).

The only electric LSM I've found here is the Motorino Super Soco TS, but it's more like a sport bike and I'm trying to find something that looks more like a Vespa.

Buddy did the same thing. Its fast, but his distance really suffered.

I just told him to buy a Grom, instead of a knock off =)

I used cells from a wrecked Leaf. Easy 100km range. No insurance, fuel, license.

Maybe if they were higher than needed to begin with.. Otherwise it seems risky to use the brakes on something designed to go a certain speed and pump the speed up so much

yeah mang, my 250cc vespa is pretty quick. it has 22HP!!!!

ive escaped being "richmondized" quite a few times thanks to its massive POWAH.

Plus 4 litres to fill up, and goes 170km with those 4 litres

Vespa will start sells a electric scooter starting later this year and it is coming to Canada. however price is going to be expensive I think around 10k MSRP and performance just on par like the 50 cc or may be even slower. but at least its a start

The Vespa would be perfect except it's too powerful and would require a full motorbike license which they don't want to do.

Don't think these are sold in North America but these Gogoro scooters are pretty cool. They're all over the place in Taiwan now.

Finally:

https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/03...tro-vancouver/

Quote:
Electric kick scooters to be allowed on some Metro Vancouver roads in pilot project

The three-year program is coming to six cities in B.C., including Vancouver, West Vancouver, and both the City and District of North Vancouver, which still need to update their own by-laws.

Similar to e-bikes, people using electric kick scooters need to be 16 or older, wear a helmet, and follow the rules of the road for cyclists. You don’t need a driver’s licence or insurance.
IMO, it's kind of stupid that there is a minimum age requirement of 16. IMO, the suitability of riding should depend on the ability and maturity of the person (ie. child), and that is best left to the discretion of the parents. (OK, that is actually a recipe for disaster since there are tons of parents that don't know any better, but I digress...) But other than that, I am so glad this is finally happening.

We still need to see when (as in, starting date) the program will start. Hopefully it'll be soon.
