^^ well I was afraid to open this thread in China in case I go missing too.
But my parents were in Hk for the past 2 weeks and from what they say as long as you stay away from where the protest are happening you are pretty safe and people just go with their days.

City is basically shut down today... 11 MTR stations closed, many malls closed, including all those owned by MTR. Police used pepper spray already at 8am, I think this is the earliest police attack so far.
Today is a day of mourning for HK and China. China has been ruled by tyranny for 70 years now, and they've been encroaching on Hong Kong for the last 10+ years. HK is fighting back, and if Mainlanders care at all about China, which they say they love, they'd fight back too.  | |

Sorry to burst your bubble. It is a day of mourning for Hong Kong. It is a day of celebration for 90% of the mainland population.
Hong Kong does not agree with being ruled by China. But majority of mainlander has no problem as stated before. As stated before love looks different from all perspective. Chinese people or mainlander if you Prefer has an 100% success rate in overthrowing dynasty that majority of the population does not agree with.
If anything the 70th anniversary completely eclipse Hk protest today in minds of Mainlander worldwide.

But that doesn't mean a tyrannical fascist dictatorship should be celebrated.
As for the 'meh' attitude, it's simply the nature of effective propaganda and prohibition of reality. It's not surprising at all. Things have gone to "really fucking bad" to "nearly destroying the entire country" to "hey a capitalist dictatorship is capitalist at least". But now it's heading towards the "insane cult of personality" realm under Xi. That is something Chinese people need to realize sooner rather than later. Oh and the entire rest of the world, because don't think he's going to stop at HK (and then Taiwan)
Just saying, if you REALLY love China (and you should, it's an amazing country) then you should be on the side of liberty, not tyranny. That's all.
And don't try making the argument that communists and fascists (and racists) often make, that Chinese people genetically are predisposed to wanting to be ruled by dictators. Fuck that. All humans want liberty, it's just a matter of how many of them are under effective control, or are simply apathetic (we've seen many cases of apathy towards things like this, or the environment, or the welfare of others, all in the name of "my bank account")

Another angle, the police charges in with his gun drawn, with the intent to kill
There's footage of a unconscious/unbreathing protester bleeding from the head, being blocked from medical help by police. I am not going to post it here. So while this kid may survive (he's in surgery now), at least one other looks like they didn't.
Protesters are going to need more than just molotovs to prevent this from happening more from now on. Beijing got the escalation they wanted.
If police literally stayed home today, we'd probably just have a bunch of people screaming at no one, with a bunch of unused molotovs, while fascism-supporting businesses got trashed (which they are anyway, police aren't stopping that from happening)
This is just unnecessary violence. It could all end peacefully tomorrow.

Media outlets pulling reporters from the streets. The result of Beijing's increased violence is suppression of the press.
Of course it will still come out via twitter and what-not, but we can no longer count on media outlets with good reputation. Have to be very careful with the info that comes out.

Fail me all you want, but it looks like the protestors are using lethal force. That warrants the use of lethal force from the police. Hell from that overhead video, it looks like 30 protestors v 5 cops or whatever (as an example of ratio).

Skinnypup, let's put it in another way. If you come to Canada (or the US), start a HK (violent) protest, and you start charging at the cops in a mob frenzy, with pipes and shit. You bet the cops are going to shoot to kill, you might get tasered first, but you're gonna get shot. Regardless of if the cops started it first or not.
I'm not disputing the whole entirety of the events and I'm well versed enough to know what this was all about. I'm simply saying, at an objective standpoint, lethal force was warranted.
This should have stayed as a peaceful protest, keep the cops in the wrong. Now it's just a fucking mob.
