So this is a history of my family's Toyota ownership:
Toyota Corona
Toyota Tercel
Toyota LE Van (aka Chinese Triad Pek Yau Van) x 3 (they kept getting stolen and ICBC kept replacing them for us)
Toyota Cressida x 3 (One sold to fliptuner and CorneringArtist haha)
Toyota Corolla
Toyota MR2 (Supercharged and Turbo!)
Lexus RX300
Toyota Sienna
Toyota Corolla iM
Our cousins have owned a handful of Toyotas as well, such as the Cressida, Sienna, SC300, SC400, LS400, RX350, GS300, GS350 F Sport and a 93 4Runner with 350,000 miles (first owner too!) Too many fucking Toyotas. The only time they ever failed was because they were stolen and not recovered, or totaled in an accident. I blew the head gasket on one of the Cressidas we owned, but the 5M-GE was known for this after so many years.
Over the years, I strayed away from Toyota ownership, getting in to Alfa Romeo, BMW, and Porsche, but eventually went back to Toyota for my daily driver. Honda and Nissan never fared well within our family and extended families.
The worst car our family ever owned was a Volkswagen Cabriolet. That thing was nothing but electrical problems, and a complete nightmare, but it was fun for our family when it ran (yes, when it ran lol.) BMW just required too much time, money, and constant attention. I love BMWs, but man, I don't have time to be replacing shit all the time. Porsche has been good to me. I'm on my second Porsche, and moving to a third soon. But for reliability and cost of ownership, man, Toyota is great. I don't have to worry one bit. People shit on them all the time for being slow and boring, but hey, if it works, it works.

my old 2001 celica also still had good brakes at 140k before i sold it.
i learned how to drive stick on it so my clutch was worn out by then though, but still, solid car! needed nothing else.
almost just bought a rav4 but i bought a forester instead... someday i may regret that decision..

My moms first Toyota was a Corolla bought brand new in the late 70s, other than the guy unloading it off the truck she was the only person who drove it. Immediately after leaving the dealer someone plowed into the passenger door. They fixed it but it was still a crappy thing to have happen. Quote:
Originally Posted by white rocket My very first car ever was a 1988 Toyota Celica GT coupe(trunk, not hatch). It was slow-a-matic but had a sunroof and I put a nice boom in it(boom, haha!). | My first car was a manual 1987 Celica GTS coupe in red, the coupe didn't seem to be a big seller lol. It was originally owned by the head sales rep at Kelowna Toyota so it had every electronic option, and everything worked except for the tape deck which started launching the tapes into the back seat a few days before it was booked to get a CD player put in. The second owner lived in Kelowna and owned the Penticton Kal Tire so he got it up to 437k before trading it in and I ended up with it. I got it up to 468k before it spun a bearing which is pretty good considering it was in the hands of a teenager who drove like a teenager. I changed the oil regularly and the coolant once and that was it.
I tried to swap a JDM engine in but the importer screwed me over and sent me a junk engine, so I had to scrap it and I got a 1992 Celica GTS which I still have. Lots of stories about that car but the only real issue it had was the clutch springs broke so I swapped the clutch, then the "sugar cube" fell off 2 days before the Thunderbird TSD so I had no 5th gear or reverse which added some difficulties.
The 1991 GTFour RC I picked up to save it from a previous owner who had a very inept mechanic. It's had a bunch of small problems over the years that I blame entirely on poor mechanical work. I did a massive overhaul of all the mechanicals a couple years back to take that out of the equation and now it's rock solid like it should be. Mods are pretty scarce for these things so if this is "moddable" by Toyota standards I wonder just how bad things are for the rest of you guys.
My wife has a 2005 Matrix XR, we bought it 4 or 5 years ago. It's just shy of 200k now and all it's needed thus far is a starter and a serpentine belt. I've done a couple other things trying to eliminate a bit of vibration at idle but that was all my own choosing. It's a very fun car to drive since it's basically a Celica with a larger body on it.
The in laws have a 2007 Rav4 V6 they bought new, which is a blast for road trips and has been rock solid. I talked my sister in law into buying a 7th gen Celica that she's had for I think 4 years now which has also been solid, it's as something like 240k now and all she's had to do are the brakes. My brother had a 1988 MR2 (supercharged) that had a couple nice mods and was stupidly fun to drive. The motor dropped a valve so he had the head rebuilt and then he sold it, in hindsight I should've bugged him to sell it to me cheap and fixed it myself and kept it but oh well.

Had an AE86 once upon a time. My first "tuner" car and also my first project. Sold it in 2016 to pay for university. Still miss that car even though I have my FK8 now, it was slow as molasses but felt very raw and connected to the road in a way that not many modern cars can replicate.
Also had a 96' 4Runner. 330k kms and still ran like a champ. Wish I didn't sell that car either but she was a pig on gas. My first Toronto snowstorm and I regretted not bringing it over to the GTA when I moved. When I move back to BC I'd like to buy another one for light off-roading, logging trails, and such. Out of all the cars I had I think I miss my Runner the most!

I stepped out of Toyota three times and that was a mistake. However, since I (still) work within the Toyota brand, I occasionally run into rare things like Turbo 4WD Celicas.

Oh damn, that's clean. There's not many left rocking the original wheels and "we narrowed the rear track 50mm after finalizing the widebody design so we're stuck with this weird gap" fitment.

All the Land Cruisers had the typical 80s Toyota rust... and over the years, we've gotten rid of them, but still have the 1985 one remaining. It's my project. 307,000 km. Rust isn't the worst problem... main problem is that most of the engine parts are NLA/obsolete... And getting a RHD JDM cruiser isn't really what I desire... I hope I can still find a head gasket kit somewhere. Body parts are ok though. Through research and p/n cross referencing from newer models (70 series are still in production from Nov 1984 - current fyi for the peeps who don't know) it can still be done... but i'm not made of gold | it was a 79 double cab diesel i6 outfitted by ARB with only a few thousand km's
haven't got the slightest clue to overlanding so auxiliary tank was new to me

Had 2 MR2 Turbos... that's it... lol... Wrecked the first one and drove the second one into the ground. It's been garaged for 10 years almost.
Parents wanted to buy a Matrix back in 2004 but I convinced them to go with the Mazda 3 because it had more power.
2011, got tired of fixing the MR2. Was looking to by a Camry but by then Toyota was making really boring cars. Bought a 2.0T Sonata instead. Since then, it's been all Hyundais... lol... Traded the Sonata for a 5.0 Genesis, bought my parents a new Ioniq and my sister has a Santa Fe 2.0T.

Last year, my 2005 Prius with 280k was wiped-out by a distracted driver.
The 2005 served us well. It never let me down. It only need regular maintenance until I replaced the battery at 230K. I was hoping to run it for another 5 - 10 years, until its life was cut short. I spent dozens of hours working on installing mods. It had TRD suspension with a bracing from TOM's. I also installed a carputer and sound system.
I replaced it with a 2014 Prius C. Overall, it's an improvement over my old one. I miss Homelink, automatic headlights, and the mechanical button for locking the door. But, I like the improved handling (smaller, lower CoG), ride-comfort, fuel economy, and ICE (USB, bluetooth, decent speakers).
It's probably cuz I'm older now, but I'm happy enough with the stock setup that I don't feel the need to modify my vehicle. This is a first for any vehicle I've owned!

Wish this was a bit cheaper but it is a Toyota and a top optioned one at that. Would be a perfect daily driver for me. I think these are US built though so I'm not sure if they have any quality issues?
