Happy Canada Day. Despite all its faults, this country is still amongst the best places to live. Proud to say I'm Canadian.

StylinRed 07-01-2022 05:40 AM

Holy crap I've been a hermit, didn't realise it was Canada day :lol

68style 07-01-2022 08:17 AM

Seems like it's safe(r) to say Happy Canada Day this year!! Last year was a bit dubious

I think salmon festival is back in Steveston... time to go down there and not buy a $20 piece of salmon :D

MG1 07-01-2022 08:39 AM

Salmon Festival........... wow.

That, along with the PNE parade, was one of the best parades to be in (marching band days).

$20.00 for a piece of salmon? Yikes. Could get two whole sockeyes for that not that long ago. Actually, only Alaskan now. Which, btw, is Canadian salmon that those Alaskan fisherman take from us. Another kettle of fish (pun intended).

MG1 07-17-2022 02:21 PM

It's National Ice Cream Day.

MG1 09-11-2022 10:21 AM

A sad day, indeed, but one that changed the world.

9/11

I remember waking up and watching it unfold. Had to go to work..................... just didn't make sense at all, at the time. Going through every emotion imaginable on the drive to work. I was worried about the safety of my family........... not much info as to who, what, where, when, and why.

I don't believe the people behind the attacks came out right away. If they did, I'm not sure how the world would have reacted. Can't attack any one nation if it was a terrorist attack by a group not associated with a particular country. If you were a Muslim/Islamic, your life changed forever. Extremists and Jihadists, nuff said. I think through education and awareness, people have slowly................ no need to get into it.

Kinda surprised not too much attention was given to 9/11 actually ... didn't hear anything at all on the news to remind us. No moment of silence, etc. I guess all eyes are on the transition of the monarchy in UK.

CivicBlues 09-11-2022 04:21 PM

Lots of attention last year for the 20th anniversary. Expect the same for the 25th.

50 years ago today, Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in the Series of the Century. Our boys beat the godless commies. "It's our game," could be heard everywhere. Da, Da, Canada. Nyet, nyet, soviet! lol.

I was at school watching the game (in my senior year). Classes were on hold. It was a huge deal back in those days.

Russia played dirty. Kicking our players with their skates. Replacing refs with their own hand picked ones. Three penalties to start the game. Alan Eagleson having to be escorted to the Canadian bench. All happened in game 6 which was held in russia.

I recall our fans heckling Team Canada in Vancouver. The russians won the game and the Canadian players couldn't wait to get the hell out of dodge and the country. It was pretty sad.

Quote:

To the people across Canada, we tried, we gave it our best, and to the people that boo us, geez, I'm really, all of us guys are really disheartened and we're disillusioned, and we're disappointed at some of the people. We cannot believe the bad press we've got, the booing we've gotten in our own buildings. If the Russians boo their players, the fans ... Russians boo their players ... Some of the Canadian fans—I'm not saying all of them, some of them booed us, then I'll come back and I'll apologize to each one of the Canadians, but I don't think they will. I'm really, really ... I'm really disappointed. I am completely disappointed. I cannot believe it. Some of our guys are really, really down in the dumps, we know, we're trying like hell. I mean, we're doing the best we can, and they got a good team, and let's face facts. But it doesn't mean that we're not giving it our 150%, because we certainly are. I mean, the more – everyone of us guys, 35 guys that came out and played for Team Canada. We did it because we love our country, and not for any other reason, no other reason. They can throw the money, uh, for the pension fund out the window. They can throw anything they want out the window. We came because we love Canada. And even though we play in the United States, and we earn money in the United States, Canada is still our home, and that's the only reason we come. And I don't think it's fair that we should be booed.

Truth and Reconciliation Day Today. Schools, banks, federal institutions and employees, etc will be closed.

Being a philatelist, I thought I’d share this. The story behind the artists and designs of the stamps.

On a side note, Tim Horton’s has Orange Sprinkled Doughnuts for sale with all proceeds going to support Indigenous charities. A little bit of history behind orange shirt day.

I loved that show. Made you laugh and forget about all your troubles. I don't think there'll ever be a show like that again. I went to the place where they filmed the series. A replica of the bar, but it was iconic.
