In-ground sprinkler system
 

Anyone here have any experience with Rainbird in-ground lawn sprinkler systems? There is one in my house but I don't know much about it. I want to get it checked over and to determine what options are installed. Also trying to figure out where to connect to blow out the lines to prevent freezing during the winter.

in ground sprinkler systems are pretty straight forward.

I would locate and identify the controller to see what model that is, then you'll be able to see what it's feature are.

but really it's a sprinkler system. you have it on a timer to be on or off. depending on the size of the yard(s) front/back there maybe different zones

I've got the box programmed to water at the right times but there is supposed to be a moisture probe somewhere in my lawn to prevent watering when the ground is moist, and it doesn't seem to be working.

Hopefully someone with experience installing the systems can tell me where the sensor is usually installed. There are four different zones, does that mean that there is a sensor for each zone?

But the biggest worry I have is having to flush the water out at the end of the summer. There is a pipe sticking up inside the valve box which I *think* is the port to add compressed air to blow out the lines. It's a 1/2" threaded pipe with a cap on it. I'd hate to unscrew the cap and find its pressurized.

That sounds like where you blow them out, it'll be after the shutoff valve but before the electronic valves for the zone. It'll be pressurized until you turn off the water to the system inside the house. Whoever you hire to blow it out should know what to do though, they'll need the water off and usually want access to the controller to open one zone at a time.
