BC Premier John Horgan said the province has announced a $5 billion economic “action plan” that is being put in place to help support people and businesses in British Columbia as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
“The COVID-19 pandemic challenges our health, our economy and our way of life,” said Horgan. “Our action plan focuses on services to protect people’s health and safety, gives immediate relief to people and businesses, and plans for B.C.’s economic recovery over the long term.”
The COVID-19 Action Plan dedicates $2.8 billion to help people and fund the services they need to weather the crisis; $2.2 billion will provide relief to businesses and help them recover after the outbreak. The plan also provides $1.7 billion for the critical services needed in the province, including investments in housing and shelter supports, income and disability assistance programs and crucial health services.
“While this crisis continues, we need to make sure that people are kept safe and that vital services are available to British Columbians,” said Carole James, Minister of Finance. “That means making sure people can pay their bills, stay safe in their homes and provide for their families during this extraordinary time.”
Of the $2.8 billion allocated to ensure people have the services and support they need during this difficult time, the B.C. government is dedicating $1.1 billion to boost the income of people affected by COVID-19.
In the longer-term, the recovery plan will dedicate funding to particularly hard-hit parts of the economy, such as the tourism, hospitality and culture sectors. The B.C. government is partnering with business and labour leaders to build an economic stimulus plan. The Province has allocated $1.5 billion for economic recovery.
A new BC Emergency Benefit for Workers will provide a tax-free $1,000 payment to British Columbians whose ability to work has been affected by the outbreak. The benefit will be a one-time payment for British Columbians who receive federal Employment Insurance (EI), or the new federal Emergency Care Benefit or Emergency Support Benefit as a result of COVID-19 impacts.
This includes workers who have been laid-off, who are sick or quarantined, parents with sick children, parents who stay at home from work while child care centres and schools are closed, and those caring for sick family members, such as an elderly parent. The workers can be EI-eligible and non-EI eligible, such as the self-employed. The benefit will be paid to B.C. residents, in addition to their federal income supports.
The province said the plan also takes further steps to boost income supports by increasing and expanding the BC Climate Action Tax Credit in July 2020, and “as many as 86% of British Columbians will see some extra money from this enhancement.”
Eligible families of four will receive up to $564 and eligible individuals will receive up to $218 in an enhanced payment. This boosts the regular climate action tax credit payment of up to $112.50 per family of four and up to $43.50 per adult.
Together, the B.C. Emergency Benefit for Workers and the enhanced B.C. Climate Action Tax Credit will complement federal income supports and help people who are struggling with job loss, reduced income or increased costs through the immediate crisis.
To help people with B.C. student loans, the Province is freezing B.C. student loan payments for six months, starting March 30, 2020. Federal student loan payments are being frozen as well.
Effective immediately, businesses with a payroll over $500,000 can defer their employer health tax payments until Sept. 30, 2020. Businesses with a payroll under this threshold are already exempt from the tax.
Business and light- and major-industry property classes will see their school tax cut in half. This will provide $500 million in immediate relief for business that own their property and allow commercial landlords to immediately pass savings on to their tenants in triple-net leases.
In addition to the employer health tax, the Province is extending tax filing and payment deadlines for the provincial sales tax (PST), municipal and regional district tax, tobacco tax, motor fuel tax and carbon tax until Sept. 30, 2020. The scheduled April 1 increase to the provincial carbon tax, as well as the new PST registration requirements on e-commerce and the implementation of PST on sweetened carbonated drinks, will be delayed and their timing will be reviewed by Sept. 30, 2020.

Strict new curbs on life in the UK to tackle the spread of coronavirus have been announced by the prime minister.
From this evening people must stay at home except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and travelling to and from essential work.
Shops selling non-essential goods are being told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together are to be prohibited.
The UK death toll has reached 335.
If people do not follow the rules police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings, Boris Johnson said in a televised statement from Downing Street.
Countries like Canada need to go to Taiwan, and BEG them for enough masks for people who aren't healthcare workers, but still work at places deemed essential. Grocery store employees, technicians, drivers, etc.
Get a mask on everyone who needs to keep working, and this will slow down significantly.
Taiwan says they can make like 10M a day or something like that. Put them in the WHO. Or if you can't, disband the WHO and make a new one without China. I know "but they won't let us in". What's the difference if they do that, or make you lie to the people who are counting on you?
I can totally understand why service departments of dealerships are still open, but why THE FUCK are sales?
Who the fuck is car shopping?
If you do have some money for a cheap used car and you have to get to places, it's not a bad idea since that means you can avoid taking public transits.
As for new cars... Dunno, I think the other thread on this topic gives some insight into this.
Imo. There is a lot of conflicting info about masks. Bought a few just in case but it felt like I was buying heroin at the checkout with all of the smartass comments from others in line about how they do nothing or how ppl should save them for frontline workers. Some were flat out making fun of the cashiers wearing masks and how they must be sick with the virus.
“It is ok if you’re not in self-isolation, yes you can go outside and go only with your family members and small groups…maintain those distances,” Dr. Henry said. “It is important for us to keep our health and mental health going as well through this.”

At about 47:05, a reporter asks for clarification on what Dr. Henry means by it's ok to go outside

Whatever you think about wearing masks, making fun of people wearing them is LITERALLY the stupidest thing you can do.
Whether they are effective for protecting the wearer or not, at the very least, these people are wearing masks FOR YOUR BENEFIT by protecting YOU from THEM (if they have the virus).

Cuban doctors head to Italy to battle coronavirus

HAVANA — Communist-run Cuba said it dispatched a brigade of doctors and nurses to Italy for the first time this weekend to help in the fight against the novel coronavirus at the request of the worst-affected region Lombardy.
The Caribbean island has sent its “armies of white robes” to disaster sites around the world largely in poor countries since its 1959 revolution. Its doctors were in the front lines in the fight against cholera in Haiti and against Ebola in West Africa in the 2010s.
This is the sixth medical brigade Cuba has sent in recent days to combat the spread of the new disease abroad. It has sent contingents to socialist allies Venezuela and Nicaragua as well as Jamaica, Suriname and Grenada.
“We are all afraid but we have a revolutionary duty to fulfill, so we take out fear and put it to one side,” Leonardo Fernandez, 68, an intensive care specialist, told Reuters late on Saturday shortly before his brigade’s departure.
At least 23 Italian doctors have died in coronavirus epidemic
From CNN's Livia Borghese in Rome and Sharon Braithwaite in London
The number of doctors who have died in Italy since the coronavirus epidemic began has risen to 23, the Italian federation of doctors said today.
Unfortunately, the sad list of doctors who fell during the Covid-19 epidemic is getting longer. And while the official data of infected health workers increases, released every evening by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, many doctors die suddenly, even if the cause of death is not directly attributable to the virus," the federation says in a statement on its website.
Some 19 of the 23 deceased doctors worked in the Lombardy region, the worst affected by coronavirus. The other four worked in Naples (South Italy), Emilia Romagna (north Italy) and Marche (central Italy).
Some 4,824 health workers have been infected by coronavirus, according to the latest report by the institute published on Sunday.

Hope you told those people off. They're probably the same kind of people who go like "it's st patty's day corona aint gonna stop me"

Question. I looked out my window just now and saw dude vaping. When you exhale, that shit is like a plume as big as a cloud. the smoke floats around and lingers. How dangerous is that?
Sometimes when you're driving and come up to a vaper in the next lane, you can smell that shit even when your window is up.

Those same people will be packing the emergency rooms down the road due to their lack of consideration.

ICU docs asked if my dad vaped when they checked out his xrays because he had lungs that were inconsistent with a non vaping/ smoking individual
mind you his lungs were all white on the xray except for a 1" band on the right lobe

Good on Cuba, a country still dealing with these ridiculous embargoes continued by Trump.
Cuba has always had a great reputation in assisting in times like these, big props to them.
They're actually near the top in terms of developing drugs to deal with C19, including the main antiviral currently being used (as I understand, I could be wrong). But you won't hear that from US or Canadian media.

For normal human interaction, there’s no significant difference.
However, if you’re performing certain medical procedures which can cause the droplets to aerosolize (like intubation/extubation), then the N95 masks make a world of difference.
Not all front line health care workers need them, but some of them definitely do.
