I drove along 0 Ave between Aldergrove and Abbotsford this morning. It has been a while since I used that route. Normally I spot 2-3 US Border Patrol trucks along that stretch. Today there were 6. There were 3 officers standing together, seemingly shooting the shit, within 6ft of each other and not wearing masks like I have seen with law enforcement here. Didn't spot any Canadian border protection measures, but that is always the case.

Dropped the rent for our suite in half to help out our tenants. Will re-evaluate next month but she’s in the movie industry and needless to say all productions have stopped and she got laid off.

Gonna try to avoid news and social media etc for my 5 days off from work here just for a break from it all. Wife and I are in a good spot at home so no concerns here.

I’ll try and swing by RS see if I have any PM’s regarding service outages etc but stay safe everybody.

Hey I'm just trying to point out that:
-no screening at airports
-flights still coming in from highly infected areas
-lack of testing, even after spending $82 billion
-no funds put forward for extra healthcare

Basically no proactive plan that I can tell.
Seems pointing these things out is a sore spot for some. It really shouldn't be.

Again screening at the airport in Canada will do nothing. Everyone has to quarantine for 14 days. If someone tests positive it's the same.

In terms of the EI, federal financial help, and provincial rental supplement from government. Not to take one side or the other whether all should get it or just those who lost their jobs, I wonder if it would be just plain old easier and more efficient if everyone just got like $1500/mth. First this will eliminate the complexity of applying and shorten time to get $$ into hands of people. Second, it will lower the cost of HR wages to process the millions of applications in terms of distributing this.

Call it a trial or experiment of universal supplement for 3-4 months (hopefully, not longer than that.)

IF you're at home with nothing to do except watch pornhub, do something a little more productive and volunteer your time, when and where it is needed the most. You can volunteer to pick up and drive meals and needed meds to seniors. Or, just volunteer to talk to them over the phone. Don't volunteer if you don't have the necessary skills.........

I'm not quite there yet, but the elderly really need to be assured everything is going to be okay. A friendly voice.

I've got kids who'll look after me if I ever get to that stage - family and then I have RS, right? Lots of seniors are on their own with no family to speak of. Stuck in a care home, or worse yet, a government subsidized hellhole (not all, but there are some really, really horrible places out there).

A lot of people have been paying into ei for years. Doesn't seem right that they shouldn't be compensated for that.

its gonna be so easy for renters to take advantage of this... Seems like Ontario gonna get f*cked.

https://www.blogto.com/city/2020/03/...ant-afford-it/

With the rent due date fast approaching and looming over the heads of Toronto renters who've recently lost their income due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are wondering what to do when April 1 arrives.

But according to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, if you simply can't afford your rent this month, you don't have to pay it.

Ford was speaking at a press conference at Queen's Park Thursday afternoon when a reporter asked him about the issue.

"On April 1, that’s less than a week away, there are tens of thousands of Ontarians worried about making rent. Are you considering a freeze on rent or direct payments to tenants to deal with this?" the reporter asked.

The premier responded sympathetically and said anyone that really can't afford it should simply not pay.

True, but............

I've paid oodles of money to all kinds of things over the years and never got a thing from 'em. I'm fortunate and I don't mind one bit if everything I put in goes to those who truly need it. There are going to be people out there that'll apply for free money when they don't need it and run the system dry.

Emergencies like this brings out the worse in people. Trample over the helpless and less fortunate to stay afloat. When human behaviour becomes more of a problem than the problem itself.

Having said that, there are still those who tirelessly step up and do the right things. Bless them.

A lot of companies will go "bankrupt" to restructure loans, debt, liabilities and have more time to reorganize.

BC basically put out the same message to renters when they banned evictions.

Can people who have a mortgage say the same thing to the banks then? If the gov is helping renters by telling them not to pay coz the gov will step in maybe the gov should step in and home owners with a mortgage say every person who have a mortgage the gov will make $500 payment to your mortgage as well?

Not sure whats going on in Ontario, or what the message was. But with regards to mortgage, didn't we already announce payment deferrals across the board for those that require them?

Primary residence only, and you have to show evidence of job loss, is what our mortgage guy told us. If it's a investment property, nope.

I’m not really sure what I can/can’t say during this time as I really haven’t been keeping up on memos due to sheer e-mail/phone call volume. As you’d imagine, it’s not business as usual right now.

If the world survives this round of viral infections, let's hope world leaders, scientists, and governments at all levels learn from this. I believe all other outbreaks in the past throughout history were warnings of a big one. Looks like those who recover from the virus become immune from further infections. Children and pregnant women have always been spared from infectious diseases. What about this COVID-19? I'm not a scientist, so just thinking out loud.

For those who slept through biology classes.........

Is there not a place where one can go to see what the latest laws are in regards to things like social gathering limits, the carpool rumor, etc? So much info comes out every day, but it all gets lost in the shuffle.

Edit: apologies for linking to a shitty website, but they just put out a press release about some of these rumors, such as the $1000 fine for not social distancing, and car pooling (both untrue)

Im excited to see taxes raised after this is all said and done

82 billion? That will just cover EI for people

40 million people in canada, lets say a 1/4 are on EI

10 million people on EI, getting paid 1600$ monthly, is the same as 10$ a hour.
Do the math, thats 100,000,000 million an hour, x 8 hours a day the government is paying out. 82$B / 800$M
That will run out in 3 months

Not to mention, business bail outs, 500$M/monthly to cover renters, and everything else

If only saving for rainy D̶a̶y̶s̶ Months was a requirement by the government, but i guess people need their smokes
