Bartenders are some of the most short sighted people I’ve ever been around, especially considering how much money some made.

I worked at Tonic and Stone Temple for 2.5 years and some people were raking in 1000-1500 per weekend. They would then go ahead and blow it all during the week of frivolous shit or just go out drinking and partying until they’d reset the following weekend. It was pretty much 75% of them that had that attitude. Especially people who lived downtown and lived “service industry life”

My friends roommate is a bartender/server and she's still going out till 3AM on the weekends. Likely for social gatherings. I'm certainly not saying everyone in that industry is like that but your point about making decisions that are near sighted is prevalent. Many of whom also lives downtown. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when things finally settle down and the hospitality industry recovers at a snail's pace. Their tips will certainly not continue to support their lifestyle pre-covid.

Has anyone else found it incredibly ironic that people keep talking about herd immunity now? You know what else gives you herd immunity? VACCINES! The very thing many people have been incredibly misinformed about and/or avoiding for years.

This is what the world looks like with one key vaccine being non-existent.

Yeah, I mean no one in construction, or oilfield work, or the trades, or accountants, or business owners, or real estate agents, or lawyers do that.....

Lol well most people in construction etc don’t make that much money relative to a nightclub bartender etc.

But yea, it’s the same thing as Alberta oil bro’s etc. When your income is high and your IQ is low, you spend dat cake.

I’ve worked in a few different fields that it was by far the most notable in that industry where as construction etc people were just trying to get by

Oil layoffs down in Texas as well. A lot of Bubbas with Brodozers parked in their driveways with no place to go.

Thing about construction is it doesn't come in the lumps that bartenders (at least club bartenders) get. When you make $1500 in a weekend it's easy to forget the rest of the week you make nothing, because you aren't working.
Lots of people don't have financial sense though. School doesn't teach you and what people parents taught them is often not relevant for the current world.

You'd almost think our whole capitalist system was rigged to prevent wholesale teaching of basic financial literacy in schools at an early age. I mean, how many restaurants, bars, clubs, tattoo parlours, retailers, jet ski dealerships, car dealerships, payday loan stores would go out of business if people stopped spending frivolously?

The answer? We'll find out soon enough.

I knew people who worked in Alberta who would actively not pay off their credit cards even though they had more than enough cash in their accounts to.

The reason? Because “I’d rather see money in the bank”

Yea.. lol

i recall hearing a story of guys slaving in the oil field, trying to be smart/responsible by sending it back to their wife so they don't blow it, all the while the wife is cheating while he's slaving away, comes home and realizes he still ends up broke (and alone) but didn't get to experience all the fun of blowing it...

At my school they taught a bit but nobody paid attention and even for those that did a bunch of broke highschool kids have zero concept of adult levels of money.

People need to know how to learn things on their own but apparently all those book reports and library research projects did jack shit.

Does anyone remember being taught cursive writing? Do they still teach that shit in schools today? I mean they could have taught us compounding interest and opportunity cost but nooo we needed to learn how to make our words all fancy for all the letter writing we'll be doing.

Bartenders make that much?

Seriously I've been thinking about getting a 'real job' right when this shit hit, so I am wondering what to do when/if things get back to normal

Was thinking either coffee or bartending, both things I pay a lot of attention to and do from home, but I know nothing about the "work" part of it... (sorry for the digression)

During the Olympics and on special nights like Halloween, New Years, etc it wasn’t uncommon for the top bartenders to make 2k in one night and that’s at the shitty clubs I worked at lol

I think a barista would be much more enjoyable and not have to deal with the idiots in a bar though (unless you’re in a classier establishment lol)

Not even close, other than maybe dimepiece girls working at Brandis or the old dude lifers at the Roxy.
Good bartenders make what good servers make. Equivalent to what people that make 50-60k gross take home.
Lots of bartenders and servers alike, like to mention the one time they took home $600 and then act like they make it every night, and complain profusely when they don't. That said we all know people love inflating their income. After all if we took everyone here at face value the average income of RS is probably somewhere around 150k a year and everyone only dates models.

Not an antivaccer in the least, but the idea of a rushed vaccine should be very concerning. Especially if it involves forced vaccination by law

Realistically, it'll take about 12-18 months at the quickest/safest pace possible for a viable vaccine. The point I was trying to make was that we've literally had people think about getting sick with an aggressive, highly contagious, new virus with the goal of achieving herd immunity.

Meanwhile, all of the vaccines that been developed to prevent people from getting sick from a wide variety of really nasty viruses which legitimately (and safely) give you herd immunity have been ignored by a growing number of people.

I mean, I learned basically nothing in Career and Personal Planning in 6 years. Aside from super basic resume and cover letter tips, what did they actually try to teach us that was of any use? Taxes? Budgeting? Meal-planning? Nope

It was pretty much just looking up what jobs paid the most (lawyer, doctor, etc) and writing reports on them. Complete waste of time.

Oh man I forgot about CAPP. I will teach my kids financial literacy. We all know the school system won’t do it.

No, the school system is too busy trying to get the majority of the kids to learn the basic life skills most kids decades ago had before entering Kindergarten. Things moms and dads were supposed to be doing. When kids show up at school for the first time still wearing diapers and not knowing how to spell their name or tie their shoe laces, what can you expect? Then, those little rug rats grow up and become teachers.

The ministry of education had the right idea (about 15 years ago). CAPP, Information and Communications Technology, Tech Ed, Home Ec, Sciences, Social Sciences, Language Arts, yada, yada, yada curriculums were really well thought out. Only one problem. The teachers couldn't do it. There was no support (money, training, etc.). And, believe you me, they needed a helluva lot of support. When teachers can't spell or compose proper sentences, the expectations................. anyway. I've said this many times before, the education system is only as good as the society it serves. When parents just let their kids drown in their own shit and drop them off to a glorified baby sitting service........... nuff said.

I know for a fact that most of the RS members I've met along the way are doing a great job raising their kids. Taking ownership of their little one's education. There's nothing like good parental support no matter what the situation. Sad part is, that support tends to die down once the little guys leave elementary and middle schools. It's not cool. Having said that, through the PAC, I've seen parents continue to be part of their children's growth. Not easy, but.............. I miss being part of my children's PAC. If you are lucky to be at a school that has great leadership (principal and admin team), the sky's the limit.

So true in many ways... if school taught us what we should be learning, we would never have to learn about sin / cos / tan, no algerba, and no fucking Pythagorean theorem!!!!! Only good thing which came out of that was learning to cut thru the school fields when I was a kid.

Schooling + laws are always behind on society's standards and needs. Look at vaping.. still trying to come up with rules and regulations.

TRUE story. On a conference call with 55 people who all lost their jobs (i was one of them; this guys said he has never had a resume since he graduated since the one he learned to do in high school (this guy is over 45+ yrs old. We were in shock... guess some people did use the CAPP course to do his resume ahhaha
