They should be focusing on breaking up these large gatherings and fining people for not social distancing/self-isolating.

They should be focusing on breaking up these large gatherings and fining people for not social distancing/self-isolating. | But setting speed tracks is much easier to catch speeding drivers while trying to catching people not social distancing actually requires more work.

Some good news for Canada https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...-testing-kits/ Quote:
Health Canada has approved a new rapid test for COVID-19 that can produce results in under an hour, which is expected to alleviate the pressure on public health laboratories and help circumvent testing kit shortages.
Ottawa-based Spartan Bioscience received approval on the weekend and will be ready to start shipping tests for the federal and provincial governments as early as Monday, said Paul Lem, the company’s chief executive officer.

I'm most curious to see what kind of numbers we have 2-3 weeks from now after this long weekend. Numbers appear to be leveling off but we aren't at the point where things can be normal yet.
Numbers in BC in particular have been great. Good job to everyone who did their part so far!

I am just more worry once city returns to normal who will still have a job to go to (those that have been laid off). That's the real test. I already know the coffee shop beside my apartment is folding for good after this (owner lives in the same building so when I saw him earlier I asked about it and he simply said he going to close shop after. The so call relief fund from the gov never help him one bit). Sad to see him go.

Coffee shops and restaurants are the least of the concern with business loss.
So many larger business which do contract work for customers locally and abroad are not getting paid for work they’ve already done because companies want to hold their cash for as long as possible. These are companies that employs dozens if not hundreds of employees and they are all at risk of closing for good as most operate on tight margins as is.

Yeah things will never be the same. I’m very worried for many of my friends who went off and opened up restaurants of their own.
People NEED to consider where their money is spent after all this. They need to support the businesses they care about or will lose them forever.

You think I don’t have dozens of employees and tight margins?

I’d say coffee shops, mostly due to the majority only serving coffee and pastries etc. And having lower numbers of employees aren’t the gravest concern (although many will lose life savings, livilhood etc. Their loss will be felt lighter) compared to restaurants where you have numerous tiers of employees, suppliers, etc.
This is the shift to the dystopian future where you only shop at Walmart and Costco and you either eat at Cactus Club or McDonald’s
We’ve been trying to support local by eating out a few times a week from our favourite spots but some have been closed completely for weeks now and I’m curious to see if they ever return

Is many many mom and pop restaurants, coffee shops, bubble tea etc etc.
Just an example there is a few local sushi place I visit very frequent Matoi Sushi, Matsuzushi and Stem Japanese Eatery all are small local shops espcially Stem Japanese Eatery and Matsuzushi(this place is actually run by the owner and his wife). Sure you might want to say they hardly hire anyone, they don't do much for the economy. But there are many many shops like them. When you walk by/drive by you might see a lot of these small restaurant/coffee. Now just think if 30% of them shut down that's a big blow to the economy. They might not hire many people but they also order their grocery, material, pay tax to the gov. get people to go out and spend.
And to be honest most place that my wife and I go out to eat are these small mom and pop shop not Earls, Blue etc etc. I wish they don't have to go but some will shut down which is sad since they offer way better food than a chain restaurant.

One thing I've noticed is the level of gratitude on tipping no matter the amount. Been getting a million thank you's when I'm tipping on take out right now where as before it would not have been the case. Chatting with owners of various shops some are in good spirits and are still managing to pay rent and turn a small profit but obviously at the expense of having to fire most of their staff and in some cases even having to bring their kids to work and turn the restaurant as their own little day care for the day.

So according to JT something for essential workers as well during his speech? Couldn't hear it clearly. If that's the case why not just give money to every Canadian that's over the age of 18? Much easier then what he is doing now.

How quickly things bounce back will depend largely on the government's response to the economy.
That will probably be even more important than what their response to the virus has been.
