What are your thoughts on this news headline from the Province? Personally, I have not been a target of racist attacks as a Canadian Born Chinese, born and raised in Vancouver, during this corona virus outbreak.

The lady that is mentioned in the article, Linda Hao, does make a good point. H1N1 was not labelled the "American virus". Zika was not labelled in the media as the "Brazil virus". Then the Province rag puts out a headline "China Virus" to describe Corona virus.

This sounds to me as an outright attack and bullying by the Province paper against the Chinese community in Vancouver and in other cities around the world. :considered:

And it's perfectly understandable. A mass panick will only make the already bad situation worse.

They said that China is respecting world copyright issues by doing it the right way instead of infringing upon them and would allow them to start making the drug in China faster for their own citizens because the company that makes it can't make enough of it fast enough... it even says that global sales would be unaffected by any of the steps China is taking.

It's like you read the first line and made the rest up yourself.

It also says that governments are allowed to ignore patents n licensing during an emergency situation (like corona) but instead China's like naw we'll let everyone make some money off of this :lol

That’s the cheapest I’ve seen it at Kirin for years. Maybe like 5 years ago it was 39.99lb

If they had done that, someone would be posting an article saying "China ignores company's copyright and steals their work to create and sell counterfeit drugs"

Can't win man. Also I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the copyright application in this case... I don't believe there's any intention to make money off their own citizens in this case.

This is a good question.
I've heard stories of ppl being told to stay home from work for 14 days unpaid after they came back from HK or had a connecting flight at HKG.

What is the legality of employers to require employees to stay home and not pay them.

twitchyzero 02-06-2020 10:53 AM

that's a tough one

i can see it from both employer/employee perspective: why should i pay you to sit at home if wasn't a work-related trip/vancouver is expensive i cant skip an entire cheque

Basically to put it short, China is trying to steal and make money off this experimental drug...

Lives are at stake, and guess what... This virus originated from CHINA... Now the Chinese wants to license the drug that THEY didn't even create so other parts of the world HAVE TO PAY to be cured/vaccinated?!

Very classy move China... :rukidding:

Enjoy...

Copyright laws are non-existent in China. This patent will do literally nothing.

The closest estimate we can draw from is how the timeline for SARS played out. On the other hand, transmissibility is way higher and far more difficult to track down. The Wuhan coronavirus epidemic has also grown far larger than SARS had ever been.

I fully expect the new cases to peak some time before May, and then it will start trending downward, but how long it would take before it completely dies down is anyone's guess. The real danger is that it cannot be completely eradicated this "season", and sporadic cases continue to occur until we hit Oct / Nov 2020 where it can flare up again. If that happens, then we'd know the disease is here to stay. :(

LOOOOOLL :lawl:

There's a petition now. I mean, I get it, they shouldn't have called it a "CHINA VIRUS"... but pls.

This is so "gen snowflake" to be blowing it out of proportion.
I don't really understand what this petition is supposed to do. And just how many times have this virus been referred to as "China Virus"? Cause the petition makes it sound like that's the term being used everywhere.

Forgot the big one: Spanish flu

While I think the headline is a bit inflammatory, people in general are too sensitive these days. I can't imagine living life where the smallest inconvenience or slight sends me overboard.

These 2 "new" cases are really nothing new to worry about, because they are directly related to the 50+ person that was infected earlier. In fact, I'd be more worried if we could not identify the 2 Wuhan relatives of this 50 y.o. person.

So essentially, they are just the same cluster of infections, instead of some other new source creeping up out of nowhere.

SkinnyPupp 02-06-2020 04:11 PM

Apparently Dr. Li is still alive, barely. They reportedly have restarted his heart and have him on ECMO (artificial lung)

Fucking tragic if this man dies.
