https://globalnews.ca/news/7290723/c...-health-rules/

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth made this announcement about these fines, effective immediately.

Anyone caught violating B.C.’s public health rules, especially the order on large gatherings, will now face fines of up to $2,000.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth announced the move, effective immediately, to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in the province amid a recent surge in cases.

Police and bylaw officers will now be able to issue $2,000 tickets to property owners and operators who host large house parties and unsanctioned events on streets or beaches if there are more than 50 people present.

This also includes failing to provide appropriate hand sanitation and washroom facilities, failing to provide sufficient space in the venue for physical distancing, failing to obtain a list of names and contacts at a large event, and having more than five guests gathered in vacation accommodation.
“Enough is enough,” Farnworth said.

In addition, anyone promoting a large event or gathering could be issued a $200 violation ticket.

Anyone refusing to follow the guidelines or being abusive to staff at a business who are trying to enforce those guidelines could also get a $200 ticket.

“Now more than ever, this is a time to be selfless. This is time to tell friends and family that breaking the rules will hurt us all,” Farnworth said.
Now is the time to re-double our efforts to re-flatten the curve, he added, referring to a “small minority of selfish individuals across the province who are putting everyone at risk.”

In rare cases of the violation tickets not acting as a deterrent, or if there are repeat offenders, then police can recommend charges, Farnworth said. If someone is convicted, fines of up to $10,000 may be issued.

It would be more effective to just give the homeowner a box 1

I think that these fines provide a strong enough deterrent to people who are thinking of hosting large parties of 50+ people at home, and other gatherings such as the drum circles at Wreck Beach. -especially the 200 dollar fine for anyone even being verbally abusive to an employee at any business.

Can the BC government impose stronger enforcement? Yes, they can. Do our Covid cases warrant more extreme measures that were imposed in some American states? That is debatable.

For example, some of my American cousins, and an aunt and uncle faced curfews in Arizona. If you look at the US CDC stats on confirmed Covid cases in Arizona or any American state, B.C. is in much better shape than now the US.

Arizona state's governor ordered shutdowns of bars, restaurants, waterparks, etc. twice this year, in May, and June. -shutdowns for as long as 30 days.

Some states have laws for mandatory masks in public areas. Does B.C. need this law now? I don't think so.

Farnworth can announce even stiffer fines for people organizing parties or refusing to comply police orders to leave parties. What about a 5 grand fine for organizing parties and gatherings of more than 50 people?

A $1000 fine for refusing to comply with police orders to leave a party or gathering? Make the monetary fine a major inconvenience?

The new fines are strong enough deterrents against large gatherings and parties in my opinion. These are effective deterrents. Is making the dollar amount larger for the fines make the deterrents that much more effective?

If the BC government imposed curfews like Arizona's governor, that means our Covid situation would be a dumpster fire. I am thankful that we don't have the same situation as the US.

Does anyone on this thread have suggestions on other ways to curb the spread of Covid in BC other than fines?

I don't like comparing with the US because we're so different, and they're literally the worse performing country when it comes to handling this

I'd compare not only with similar countries, size, pop, beliefs (like healthcare) but also the best performing countries

And we can do sooo much better in all aspects, even penalties

If you have 2 hosts, and 2 "separate" events in the same place, then does that mean you can have 100 people and still follow the law?

This is an interesting chart I hadn't seen before

It shows total deaths in US by all causes, and as you can see deaths rise with every flu season. The 17/18 flu season was especially bad, killing 13K more people than usual, over a period of 3 weeks.

Corona though

I know there only people dumb enough to still be comparing this to the flu are gone or banned, but it's still an interesting stat to look at as more data is collected.

Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills making face masks mandatory at all locations

Quote:
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Starting next Saturday, face masks will be mandatory at all Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills locations.

In posts on social media Saturday, both grocery store chains announced the major change while thanking its customers.

“We appreciate your support as we work together to stop the spread of COVID-19,” a Facebook post from each company reads.

Both No Frills and Real Canadian Superstore are owned by Loblaws Companies, which also owns Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaws Markets. So far no posts have been made about a mandatory mask policy at those stores.

Last month, two Superstore locations — one in Surrey and one in Mission — both reported that one of its employees tested positive for COVID-19, while earlier this week a new community outbreak with nine infections was announced at a Loblaws warehouse in Surrey.

Fraser Health is monitoring the outbreak, and those close to the infected employees have been told to self-isolate.

“There is no demonstrated evidence that COVID-19 is transmitted through consumption of packaged foods, is a foodborne illness or is linked to transmission of any foodborne illnesses. Consequently, there is no evidence of risk to those outside the distribution centre,” the health authority said Thursday.
Mandatory masks are supposed to happen on the 29th, but so far there doesn't seem to be official word from the company's social media.

The first party host in B.C. got slapped with a $2300 fine for violating the Covid protocols.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2020/08...g-covid-rules/

Police in Victoria may have issued the first fine under the province’s new crackdown on those violating COVID-19 protocols.

At around 7:00 p.m. Friday, officers found 15 people inside the one-bedroom suite and warned a resident about hosting a party during the pandemic.

The police then asked the host to end things as it was causing a disturbance and was unsafe.

The host said he would cooperate so officers left but stuck around in the area and saw groups of people continuing to go in and out of the buildings.

“Officers … continued to observe groups of people coming and going from the building. The officers re-attended the one-bedroom suite and noticed approximately 30 people inside, not practicing physical distancing. Many of the party attendees were youth. The room was densely populated, hot, and moisture had built up on the windows,” a release from the Victoria PD release reads. “Patrol officers believed approximately 40-60 people attended the party.”

The party host slapped with a $2,300 ticket and officers told the hosts guests to leave.

“The resident of the suite failed to document the attendees and their contact information to assist with contact tracing in the event that someone is later found COVID-19 positive.”

The police department added they would like the public to remember the “absolute importance of following the guidelines.”

“Please consider the safety of the public and the safety of our officers who are called to attend these gatherings.”

There've been reports of reinfection, but this is the first confirmed reinfection case of a guy in HK

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/h...-a9685571.html

Quote:
Scientists have reported the world’s first case of a human being reinfected with coronavirus in a discovery that could have significant implications for the development of vaccines and hopes of natural immunity against the virus.

Researchers at Hong Kong University’s department of microbiology said genetic sequencing of the virus showed a Hong Kong man was infected twice by different versions of the Covid-19 virus months apart.

According to the study paper, the patient was a 33-year-old man who was in good health. When he was first infected he suffered a cough, sore throat, fever and headache for three days. He had a test that confirmed Covid-19 and he was hospitalised on March 29.

He was discharged on 14 April after two negative swab tests.

Four and a half months later he was returning to Hong Kong from Spain via the UK when he tested positive during entry screening at Hong King airport on 15 August. He was hospitalised again but had no symptoms throughout.

Experts cautioned against jumping to conclusions based on one single case but acknowledged the discovery was a concern.

Announcing the results, the Hong Kong University said: “An apparently young and healthy patient had a second episode of Covid-19 infection which was diagnosed 4.5 months after the first episode.

This case illustrates that reinfection can occur just after a few months of recovery from the first infection. Our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may persist in the global human population as is the case for other common-cold associated human coronaviruses, even if patients have acquired immunity via natural infection.

“Patients with previous Covid-19 infection should also comply with epidemiological control measures such as universal masking and social distancing.”

If the research, published in the medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, is correct then it could mean vaccines against the virus may not give permanent protection and people may not be able to rely on being immune to the virus after recovering from an infection.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1md_...XanNaQLCi/view

And that's the actual study
