I guess I’m just a typical millennial who doesn’t read the news paper. Totally missed that. I do sympathize and I wouldn’t personally call it that, but it is common. The Spanish flu? MERS is Middle East respiratory syndrome.

Spanish Flu was named over a hundred years ago when people were dumb and racist as fuck. In fact it started in the battlefields of WWI in France and it was named "Spanish Flu" because the Spanish media was not censored at the time, leading people to believe there were a ton of cases in Spain.
MERS was named after a geographical area. It would be much worse if it was called "Chinese Virus" but perhaps it's due to the negative connotations associated with China *blank* being used as a slur. Sorta how "Chinaman" is racist but not "Irishman" or "Frenchman"

First of all, it's written Chinese, no need to qualify it as Mandarin as other dialect speakers can read it as well. Second, why would you care? The ad obviously isn't for you or me. I can't read Chinese either and it doesn't piss me off. In fact I'm glad for it, one less ad invading my headspace as far as I'm concerned.
But here's the thing, per Foreign Policy: That video in question reportedly wasn't filmed in Wuhan or China in general—the woman in the video, who news outlets have identified as Wang Mengyun, is a host of an online travel show who was actually eating a dish in Palau, an island country located in the western Pacific ocean. The video was also reportedly filmed in 2016—well before the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. Mengyun has also reportedly apologized for the footage. "I am sorry everyone. I should not have eaten a bat," she said, according to the South China Morning Post. “[I] had no idea during filming that there was such a virus,” she continued. “I realized it only recently.”
It is pretty apparent though that this outbreak has been racialized much more than other recent ones including SARS(China), MERS (Saudi, Korea), H1N1(Mexico). Perhaps because of the size and drastic measures being taken have made it a huge news story. Again, calling it "China VIrus" is not racist in itself, but the intent is there to perhaps rile up some of the more unenlightened idiots out there.

Plane ticket to Beijing in March got cancel from Air Canada. Got an email that just said they cancel my ticket. However, no updates on their website. Want to call about the refund and stuff been on hold since 11am......
Heard from the in laws Beijing and Shanghai is starting limited trains going in and out of the city same with flight. Shit is getting real.
Shit like this is almost always going to originate in places like China etc. Where people are literally living on top of one another in such densely populated cities and neighborhoods
Think about the amount of people you interact with on a daily basis. I think I probably work in a workplace with more exposure to people than your typical workplace and I MIGHT be around 30 people on any given day
Now I’ve never been to China or Wuhan but I can imagine you may run into hundreds if not thousands of people just walking a few blocks. The risk for contact is crazy

I only know of Spanish Flea, the song, by Herb Alpert.............

Meanwhile, these things never seem to originate from other densely-populated areas like Japan ...
Agree with everything you said, and yeah that idiot eating the bat was mostly perfect timing, but the "COVID-19" genome is 96% similar to a bat coronavirus, so it almost definitely came from a bat. It would have had to go through another species first though, and right now they are suspecting it was the pangolin, since they found a coronavirus on them that is 99% similar to "COVID-19"
Calling it "China Virus" is absolutely racist - it was never called that to begin with, but racists are using the name now. In case anyone was curious, the Hong Kong subreddit is absolutely ruined now, filled with anti-China racists from all over the world, mostly Australia and USA. They insist on calling it things like "China Virus" and "WARS" and the sub is filled with racist propaganda. Their live thread is still useful, but the subreddit itself is a lost cause.
Also I’m not sure but I would think personal wealth in Japan, and especially in the most densely populated centres is far greater
Entirely possible that a public toilet here in Japan is cleaner than some peoples toilets at home
The word clean, is taken to next level. A country of OCD

Exactly my point, China is a geographic location, middle eastern is less geographic than it is ethnic, but they're both geographic, I'd agree with all the PC outcry if these were called the arab or chinese respiratory syndrome
The racism as you put it, is coming from us Chinese not in China, we're probably the most outspoken "eww not again mainlanders" "eww mainlanders be fucked up" "stay away from mainlanders" white ppl are just like "not again China, sigh, always Doin crazy shit"
It seems more like white ppl are shocked by the craziness, while other chinese/asians are getting nasty

There is always wecaht pay or just use the red pocket function. In laws are saying going to the supermarket you have to get your temperature taken like 7 times before you get to the supermarket. Is annoying as hell lol. Oh and they have police driving around if they see anyone wandering around they ask you to go back home
Unless you are working, going to work, supermarket they want you to stay indoor.

I guess they'll die if they don't have any money for food and cant work.
Just to race bait, what percentage of the people who've gotten the coronavorus are of non Chinese desent? Could it still be racist to call it the China virus if ONLY Chinese DNA could contract it? Hypothetically speaking.
