Many of these health regions in BC have had double digit numbers total since the beginning.
I would think that those places have quite a low population so I don't see them having an excess of healthcare workers regardless of outbreak? It's not as if they suddenly have a surplus of doctors and nurses sitting there doing nothing the past 6-8 years. A town like Smithers with a population of 6000 people isn't going to have 500 nurses.

So let's say you want to take an area that is currently used for non-clinical use and use it for patient rooms. First, you need services there (medical gases, nurse call systems, etc.) that probably aren't there. Those need to be installed to building code plus their applicable CSA standards. Do you have the required spaces for patient care in the area like clean and soiled utility rooms? Clean and soiled linen rooms? Clean supply rooms? Nursing stations?

Then there's the HVAC requirements, which are typically significantly more for patient care areas than they are for non-clinical spaces. Now you need double-to-triple the airflow and additional filtration. Can the air handling unit provide additional airflow while simultaneously overcoming additional levels of filtration? Can the air handling unit's filtration system even be upgraded? Can the air handling unit handle higher levels of outside air and maintain heating/cooling on peak days without freezing up/losing control? Can the secondary heating/cooling sources downstream (e.g. reheat coils, radiant panels, radiators, etc.) handle the additional airflow? Pressure relationships are likely to require significant adjustments. Is the duct work sized to handle the new requirements? Then you may have equipment that can't be used in patient care areas that is acceptable in non-clinical areas like fan coil units that may be relied on for heating/cooling under normal circumstances, so how do you heat/cool the space now?
y'all need to read and understand this comment. it's huge insight into what happens before anything can be up to code AND standards. all of the above was done at my hospital to convert just a handful of rooms in the ICU into negative pressure rooms in order to deal specifically with covid cases. that alone probably cost a ton of money and was done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

having licensed, professional healthcare workers who are ready to work and don't require further training is a very scarce resource. even if it's remotely possible to relocate them, they also have to be willing to do so. the previous comment someone made about people leaving busy wards for less stressful ones is also an issue. luckily, from what i've witnessed the nurses are probably the most united group of workers i've ever seen. they bend over backwards to help each other out, stand up for each other, as well as provide all sorts of care and services that the doctors simply don't have time for. doctors have the utmost respect for them for good reason.

on another note, from the hospitals i've worked at, there's no such thing as an unused wing. it's not like the movies where some random part of the hospital is abandoned and no longer in use. this is exactly why other areas were converted into covid treatment spots; there is no "spare" space. hell, even our meeting rooms have been taken over to give housekeeping a full change room. there were also contingency plans around the lower mainland (ie bc place as a field hospital) if necessary. luckily, we did well during the first wave and it wasn't necessary. hopefully we don't need to go down that road.

personally, my department was renovated about 2-3 years ago? that was a shit show. could provide some details if anyone's interested.

I think we need to terms and acknowledge that us here on Revscene are somewhat in a bubble of sorts when it comes to our held opinions on COVID.

Given what we're seeing in terms of the election numbers down south, it's becoming clear that COVID is not a motivating factor for people. As bad as Trump has handled the pandemic, counties and states being hit hardest by COVID have voted in larger numbers for him.

This speaks to the fact that it seems a larger majority are on the side of "let's get back to normal", and move on. Whether or not we agree with this, it has to be noted. There's a reason both the NDP and BC Liberals didn't focus on COVID as an agenda argument during the election, the subject doesn't seem to speak to the vast majority of voters. I think the Democrats made a mistake using this as their focus, as it isn't resonating with the public.

We really need to be aware of this factor, you're simply not seeing the public buy-in at this point. I believe we need more discussion in terms of what the new normal will be, or what the plan is going forward here, which I'm not seeing discussed enough. Proclaiming simply "stay home", "wear your mask", "you're selfish" isn't the final answer.

this stood out to me as the numbers came in, people for the large part dont gaf anymore

also tried going gym for the first time at busy 5:30pm

mask usage maybe under 10% (dont blame them) but saw many instances of not caring to distance; would've noped it out of there if i didn't have a face shield on at all times

i'm not sure how else you can ask how many sets left though esp with people having headphones on, maybe some hand signals like when you're diving?

A controversial yoga studio owner and COVID-19 conspiracy theorist has been charged with three counts of breaking the Quarantine Act.

On his Facebook page, Mak Parhar says he recently attended a flat-earth conference in South Carolina, an event called Flatoberfest 2020, and refused to self-isolate for two weeks once he returned home to the Lower Mainland.

Speaking at an anti-mask rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery Sunday, he said he “played their game” on the flight by wearing a mask on board but removing it when he was off “the radar.”

Parhar also admitted to the crowd that he ignored multiple warnings from officers before being handed tickets.

According to court records, Parhar violated the Quarantine Act for three days spanning Halloween to Nov. 2.

Parhar told the crowd he refused to provide information to officials such as a quarantine plan and said he does not apply to the Quarantine Act, saying he is not defined as a “traveller” or a “person.”

“They call it to quarantine. It’s not really quarantine. It’s self-imprisonment,” he claims.
Same guy who was saying his hot yoga killed the virus back in March.

Watch him get a slap on the wrist and set the precedent.

A guy who blatently violates the act multiple times after multiple warnings over an extended period of time. If he doesn’t get hit hard it’s kinda like fuck it, who cares then

# of hospitalization is the key stat. I mean the higher the cases, the higher % of those will be hospitalized but the actual number in hospital is key. That's what gonna drag down and clog up healthcare. Positives who stay home for 2bweeks are just inconveniences for the person.

and just overall it's going to be way more people confined indoors as it gets colder compared to the Summer where people could let loose in the parks and beaches or even just random walks.

Danish authorities have said a lockdown will be introduced in some areas over a coronavirus mutation found in mink that can spread to humans.

The government has warned that the effectiveness of any future vaccine could be affected by the mutation.

Bars, restaurants, public transport and all public indoor sports will be closed in seven North Jutland municipalities.

The restrictions will come into effect from Friday and initially last until 3 December.

It comes soon after an announcement that Denmark would cull all its mink - as many as 17 million.
