I know the engineer I work with has his mom in a ridiculously expensive one back east he told me over 100K a year. If they have the funds why not I guess, he also said from selling their family farm his mom has enough money to stay there for 30 years and she's already in her 80s hah.
it could go both ways. Irina and Peter were together and wanted a new start. Irina's mom was in her 80s, they put her in a old age home thinking it might be 3-5 yr max... she lived till 96... so yeah. after 5 yrs, they had to move her mom back because it became they couldn't afford it.
This is effectively what happened with us. My grandma on her 2nd stroke wasn't doing the greatest, with some early signs of alzheimer's, her unwillingness to do physio treatments, and overall lack of will to live, she just wasn't recovering. My parents were still working, brother is working, and I've moved out.
The thing that bursted the dam was when she tried to commit suicide while no one was home. She was in the hospital for 3 months because we just couldn't provide adequate care at home and there's no way we could prevent a suicide from happening again.
They fast tracked her to a care home. She ended up at Fraserview. It's a horrible place to be at these care homes. It's like being in a low security prison with unlimited visitation rights. The only bright spot for my grandma was when we visited. Her condition deteriorated very quickly in the last 3 years and she passed away in September this year.
When she first moved there, the place indeed smelled like piss all the time, people screaming, hot in the summer cold in the winter, dreary beige walls, depressing aura, all in one. Two years in the new building was built and it became a lot nicer, but still doesn't change the fact that it's like a low security prison.
To be clear, it wasn't covid that took her. I'm sad she's no longer here, but in some ways glad that she's no longer suffering. Covid meant we can no longer visit her and her only bright spot in the world was taken away. Her sphere of attention just wasn't big enough to be able to acknowledge us when we went to see her through the glass windows.
We got to see her before she passed away because they had to send her to the hospital for a medical condition. I saw her smile for the first time in a long while when I visited and talked to her for an hour at the hospital. She passed away 3 days after they sent her back to the care home. I believe that maybe she got to see us again and she was happy to go.
Yeah covid sucks. Care homes are bad places to be. Covid just makes it that much worse. I understand they need to protect these high risk residents from the big bad disease, but at the same time it's gray because you are almost taking everything worth living for away from these people who are stuck there.
Sorry for the long winded post. I'm just going through a rough patch in life right now, but I'm sure everyone is in someway or another.
Definitely empathize with you on that.
My mom passed a couple years back in one of these places. George Pearson care facility. Lot of paraplegics among other disorders. Not a nice facility by any stretch.
When I'd talk with some of the residents (the ones who were capable) I was surprised how many of them would rarely, if ever, get visits from family. Even when they weren't far. Some hadn't seen them in years. Just heartbreaking.

^^I'm curious what these "enhanced measures with increased testing and screening" are exactly.
Because if they're anything like the enhanced measures that were set in place at our airports when this thing really started taking off, then they're a joke. And not the funny kind.

I have a feeling their precautions simply weren't being adhered to seriously enough by staff, patients and visitors alike. Having 42 staff members become infected is an astronomically high number. The phrase "enhanced measures" is likely a euphemism for making sure they get their shit together and do the right thing.

The U.S. also reached a grim milestone today of 250 thousand deaths due to Covid. The dumpster fire that keeps getting bigger as more gasoline is poured on to the fire.
as per CNN: In less than 10 months, Covid-19 has killed more people than strokes, suicides and car crashes typically do in a full year -- combined

How many people die from the flu per year in the US?

You do have to keep in mind that those flu death figures are with a readily available vaccine though.

Flu vaccines are a hit and miss with so many strains.
Because I'm a diabetic, flu shots are free and easy to get. I've only had one or two over the course of decades I've been diagnosed as a diabetic. One year, the vaccine I did take was totally ineffective for the flu that showed up that year. They guess as to which flu will show up. Hopefully things have changed recently and they are more accurate in predicting which strain(s) will show up for any one season.

The new universal flu shot being made will cover all past strains (I believe it was back 100 years) as well as future strains so it'll be WAY more effective. You can watch "Pandemic" on Netflix for better details. I watched it quite a few months ago now. Current flu shots are sort of a "best guess" based on strands found in Australia since their winter occurs before ours every year.
"The evidence is fairly clear that children are not transmitters of COVID, so adults working within the k-12 system are bringing the virus into the class rooms and into the schools and that has led to pockets of outbreaks in BC......"
WTF?!
Teachers have been voicing their concerns on COVID and what they need to help to slow the spread of this infection through masks, reduction of class sizes, ventilation, testing...etc.. but very little was done.
This government had 6 months to figure out what return to school would look like since they shut the schools down in march.
This podcast is worth listening to. Joe Rogan has turned into pretty much a covid denier, so he's asking all the questions someone like that would ask, and this guy answers them pretty well
(watch it in a private window or your youtube recommendations will turn toxic)
Churches are going to be shut down tmw. No religious events even if it's below 50.
2 issues with school
1) BC educational laws states
(a) 848 hours of instruction for students in kindergarten;
(b) 873 hours of instruction for students in grades 1 to 7;
(c) 947 hours of instruction for students in grades 8 to 12.
2) blah blah blah... board must, as soon as practicable and, in any event, within 30 days of amending a school calendar under section 87.02 of the Act, provide the minister with the amended school calendar.
So if we shut down TODAY Nov 18 all the way say.. January. How will students make up for lost hours? And virtually?
1) how do you make up metal work, wood work, PE classes, lab work (which also has min. mandates)
2) IF teens MISS OVER 3 months of school, will teachers be obligated to SKIP summer vacations to work?
ARE YOU telling me, you are OK to work JULY and AUGUST as a teacher to make up for class time when you have been off for 30+ yrs as a teacher during summer holidays?

You know 99% of societys working force DOESNT get a total of 3 months off a year, right?
