When everyone sees these stories like this how can anyone take the orders seriously?

Like Somone sees people shouting go back to China and fuck you serve me without a mask it’s my right! And then police take them out, don’t ticket them, don’t even give them a slap on a wrist and then someone is suppose to think it’s the end of the world to get together with a friend they haven’t seen in 6 months for a beer on a patio? It’s a fucking joke

Wonder how they'd react if store employee after hearing "go-back-to-China"... went "Alright, get out of the store then. I need to close up so I can go back to China"

"NO, SERVE ME"!!

Bad apples ruining it for the rest of us as per usual it seems

A lot of talk about "think of the seniors" a page ago.

Just got off the phone with my 86 year old grandma who is nearly in tears and doesn't know what to do. Her normal life is going to church every morning, going for coffee after with her small group of friends, and coming over to our house (or us going there) to see my 3 year old, her great grand son and the most important thing in her life who lights up her day.

Now in the last few years of her life she's stuck in her house, can't goto church, and can't see her family. Shes really struggling with this now. There is no zoom or FaceTime meeting with seniors either.

You guys like to say "think of the old people" talking about likely terminally ill seniors dying at the end of their life, and seem to disregard the enormous group of them like my grandma. How many seniors are going to die from isolation and loneliness, or at least turn the corner to the steep decline in livability? I bet its more than covid.

Are you saying we shouldn't be social distancing right now?

I don't get your argument here... I don't even want to consider what comes to mind with what we were talking about a page ago...

There was a party on davie St where several people overdosed on coke and mdma, yet there wasn't a mention of violating social distancing or fines..

I drove past this today, I guessed what it was but you really couldn't tell as the signs I saw made zero sense. Imagine having so little going on in your life that you spend your weekend publicly advertising how low your IQ is.

Normal, responsible people are doing everything they can to mitigate the pandemic, and keep people like our grandparents safe, until hopefully a vaccine can make things more normal again. It is going to really really suck until then, and unfortunately there are groups trying to make it as difficult and dangerous as possible.

My point was that it seemed like a lot of people want to lock everyone down because we need to think about terminally ill people in end of life care homes. Meanwhile there are significantly more active seniors, your grandmas and grandpa's, who are now locked up unable to live their last year's enjoyably. It is not a secret that isolation is a huge factor in seniors dying, it's why so many die soon after their spouses pass away.

I am not saying we should not social distance and I'm not saying my grandma should kill herself. I am saying it is absurd that seniors like her are desperate to see their families and i cant go to my grandmas house to visit, but we could go walk around Costco doing our Christmas shopping together with 5000 other people.

Nancy Russell (woman in the article) was willing to die just to be able to see her family again.

My 94 y/o grandmother lost her husband of 75 years 2 years ago. And then her sister who lived next door to her for her whole adult life last year. She's been in a care home in Lethbridge, alberta the past five years. Obviously there's no visitors allowed currently.
My wife (she's the smart one), picked her up a tablet and set up a Facebook account for her, got the facetime app all setup for her then we had it delivered there, ready for use at command.
Visiting would be ideal of course, but this helps a lot.

Anyone reading this in a similar situation, consider it. It can make all the difference.

Not to be a "devil's advocate" or anything, but what do you think would be a better option? Close down literally all stores, including grocery stores and pharmacies? Or allow more inter-household visits and open care home visits to more family members?

BTW you said you can't do zoom or facetime with her, why is that? I know it's not the same, but it's better than no contact at all. It's all I had when my mom was in the hospital after a stroke 2 years ago, since I couldn't travel at that time. That was the last time I saw her

I would allow immediate family visits in home if less than 4 or 5 people and recommend masks. I can't believe that kind of visit is the place where large exposure events will take place.

My grandma, like many seniors, is not technologically inclined. No tablet or Wi-Fi or PC and barely can use her cellphone

Some valid points in this letter. Particularly the paragraph at the end regarding restaurants being a source due to contact tracing.

A dine-in restaurant is not an essential service.

A walk-in grocery store also is not an essential service. Could easily do pick-up/delivery like a restaurant.

I think a point to not overlook is exposure time. I spent 8 seconds walking past someone in a grocery store isle? Versus an hour (450x longer than the isle encounter) sitting in an indoor space without masks eating with other people doing the same thing.

Just saying it’s not exactly apples to apples. But he brings up great points. But I don’t think anyone is blaming restaurants? Hasn’t it been proven they’re safer than most?

Many grocery stores are not set up for curbside pick up or delivery and don't have the staff to set it up.

Restaurants managed to do it. Hire more staff or drop your margins to sort it out. That’s what we had to do.
