Reminded of this HK postal worker who took 635 sick days over 4 years LUL (sorry I can't find a non paywall source)

I'm at 663 hours in my sick bank after 5.5 years @ 135 hours/year (742.5 hours), which works out to about 11 sick days used over that time frame (average of 2/year). And that's with having significant health issues (Crohn's Disease amongst others).

Good on you for being so honest. I've seen many Crohn's patients in emergency, it looks rough. I just double checked my benefits bank this morning and am now above 600 hours as well. Really wish people would be more honest but the system doesn't reward it whatsoever.

Blessing of a union - years ago I had over 1200 days off on long term sick leave. Haven't had a single sick day I over 6 years now. Any other employer I would've been told to hit the bricks amd find a new job. Not going to lie, it did feel like a scam because I wanted to be there but was repeatedly told no. Sitting at home all day isn't as alluring as it sounds. But I'm pretty good at it right now not being able to do or go anywhere. I make it look easy lol.

I see more and more people taking stress leave now. I know sone who've been off for over 2 years with 'migraines'.. The one thing that can't be proven and is based on the honor system.

68style 12-25-2020 07:19 AM

I been at various versions of my job unionized for like 17 years and barely been off, I think I have at least 1,500 hours of sick leave built up and I’m not complaining because it means I’ve been lucky to be healthy.

That said, it’s aggravating when you see other people you know well enough to know that they’re just as healthy who started around the same time as you who have zero hours left and realize they’ve been off 200+ days more than you in the last 10 years (basically an entire year off) just because they took advantage of the system.

Even more aggravating is having a window beside you and watching the same group of people waste 15 minutes at a time for their hourly smoke break. It's not a simple stand out by the door, smoke and come in. Its go out for a walk around the area chatting with one another while making it last as absolutely long as possible. I should take up smoking

68style 12-25-2020 04:48 PM

Haha yah smokers get an extra like 1+ hours worth of breaks per day... so do coffee addicts cuz walking to coffee and back never counts as an actual break lol

But the smokers also lose who knows how many years off their life so... fair? Lol

So did any one do any Christmas snitching?

Hong Kong
Postal worker jailed for sick leave scam
Thomas Chan
Published: 12:00am, 21 Dec, 2012

A postal worker has been jailed 26 months for using phoney documents he bought from popular online shopping site Taobao to bilk his employer of 635 rest days over four years.

Tang Lai-kit, 40, also took HK$217,381 in sick leave pay, a court heard yesterday.
District Court Judge Frankie Yiu Fun-che said Tang's crimes were serious given the long span of time over which they were committed.
Tang used the documents from Taobao to make phoney doctor approvals for sick leave, which he then handed in to Hongkong Post.

When management grew suspicious and contacted the Medical Council for assistance, the council asked Tang to attend an interview, which he skipped. He submitted two fake medical reports instead.

The council then alerted the Independent Commission Against Corruption, which launched an investigation leading to Tang's arrest on January 10.

At an earlier hearing, Tang pleaded guilty to 39 charges relating to the possession and use of false instruments and equipment for making false instruments between 2009 and January this year.

The former contract worker at the Central Post Office first used a counterfeit medical certificate to claim a day off for back pain in 2009.
He later claimed that he was suffering from an "anxiety disorder" after he genuinely received three days off work for injuring his finger while performing his duties.
At that time, he was earning HK$335 a day for sorting and weighing mail and other work.

Tang's lawyer, Leung Chun-keung, told the court: "He didn't use industrial injuries [as an excuse] to deceive [his employer] of sick leave and compensation."
Leung said Tang feared going to work because of an unpleasant working relationship with colleagues.

A spokeswoman for Hongkong Post said it had an effective sick-leave management system covering contract staff. Any suspicious cases would be referred to law enforcement bodies for investigation, she said.

My area in Ladner was great. Didnt notice any more traffic in the streets, and a post-dinner dog walk around the ‘hood I didn’t see any obvious homes with cars or parties going on. Seemed by 8:30 everyone was in bed lol

Also didn't notice any sort of gatherings in the complex I'm in. Sort of impressed.

Moncton ER doctor had no idea her home was contaminated with COVID-19. Contagious for 48 hours before developing symptoms.

Are grandparents who do childcare for their grandchildren on a regular basis allowed to get together for Christmas dinner with those grandchildren along with the grandchildren’s parents?

Grandparents who provide childcare for their grandchildren may spend Christmas together.

As I said it, what's the point of restricting families getting together. When we allow ppl to flock to businesses together at full capacity with no restrictions. Let alone "essential" workers spreading it to each other, between co workers then their families.

westopher 12-26-2020 02:47 PM

As has already been said, data dictates the decisions.
Homes don’t have covid protocols, mask mandates, division between tables of people who aren’t in the same household.
Nobody is “flocking to businesses with full capacity and no restrictions.” You know those lineups outside and restaurants operating with 50% capacity and table capacity restrictions? That’s not “no restrictions.” Not to mention the gyms, spin classes and various places that have been ordered to shut.
You might not care if you get to work from home, but I’m pretty happy to keep my staff employed and able to pay their rent and mortgages, as they can’t braise meats in their home office and just compile it to drop off at someone’s house as part of an order. There’s a balance that needs to be maintained and peoples health comes first, livelihoods come second, and dry turkey dinners with your family and friends at your house are down at the bottom of that list.
It’s completely reasonable to have issues with how things have been handled, however, they have to be based on reality and not just being upset about it.

She's also the anti marker in the building and goes off saying how her sister is a nurse and will be refusing the vaccine because it'll do nothing but harm to people and since she's a health professional she takes her word for it.

Would've loved to snitch on her but my girlfriend said not to make thi vs worse between us

JDMDreams 12-26-2020 04:36 PM

Yes and has these restrictions worked? We're a year in and cases and deaths are still much higher than 3 months ago. Hospitals are getting more outbreaks and saying they're at capacity. So how many more years do you want to drag this "state of emergency" on for. Cases are at a all time high everyday on the news but we're still saying nah making that $15 min wage is more important than ppls health or lives. You gotta plan long term, that's the issue, ppl are too short sighted. Rather have a short sighted 2 week gain and not think about 6 months down the line. Hoping this will fix itself hasn't worked and we need to take action.

It's this bad with restrictions

How do you think it would be without them? The same?

Most experts think it would actually be worse, which is why the restrictions exist.

Feel free to disagree, just be sure to follow the restrictions

This is an excellent example of you not using data.
Cases have dropped substantially over the last 2 weeks.
There are people not making minimum wage that will lose their jobs, housing, etc (what the fuck does it matter what someone makes, are they expendable because they are lower paid?)
Hospitals are not at capacity, nor have they ever been in BC
How would shutting down businesses prevent hospitals from having outbreaks? The hospitals don’t close. As long as there are any cases, transmission can still occur. Do we close all businesses until hospitals stop having transmission? Do we close hospitals and see what happens? Do we close grocery stores?
Even places that have had FULL lockdowns, transmissions are still occurring, then they lockdown again. You need to have an example of success in the fight of this virus, and other than New Zealand, there’s really no great examples. They also have a small enough population with appropriate fiscal safety nets in place for that to happen. Canada doesn’t, because the people of Canada have chosen that to be the case with the governments they have elected.
I’m not arguing for finances over lives, but finances, like it or not, are directly connected to health.
The restrictions were never expected to eliminate the virus. Yes they have limited the spread, yes they have limited the destruction of the economy. Yes, that means they have worked. It’s not a 100% or 0% with nothing in between. The virus isn’t a yes or no question.

AzNightmare 12-26-2020 05:24 PM

It's a difficult situation all around.
But this year, everyone including my extended family all stayed within their own household to do multiple zoom meetings for each side of the family. I'm glad that's how we had all agreed to do it.

We did virtual white elephants, we played online board games.
On Christmas Eve, we somehow went on for 7 hours in the meet... time flew.
It actually turned out pretty good.

Bottom line is: Businesses need to carry on because they are essential or simply, people need to work to survive. It's a reasonable compromise. But people will survive if they don't see their fam or friend, and there's no point risking it.

I think many people don't really understand the concept, and whenever new restrictions are announced, their immediate response is to try to find clarification so that they can possibly find a loophole.

68style 12-26-2020 05:30 PM

7 hours on a family zoom call???? I have to say I envy tight-knit families

Geez, I can't even spend more than 1 hour at my parents house on a good day without getting annoyed and wanting to leave
