They stopped counting publicly on Feb 21. After that it was given on a "need to know" basis

Lol no. I wouldn't believe anything coming out of the CCP.
But if there were mass outbreaks or high death numbers, I'd think that info would leak out. It usually does from dissidents who risk their freedom, and even lives, to expose the truth.
Unless the lid is air tight. But I kind of doubt it could be.

Oh happysilp. wherefore art thou.

No doubt. However I wouldn't trade these consequences of freedom for that plane of rule.

Chinese journalist who documented Wuhan coronavirus outbreak jailed for 4 years

Hong Kong (CNN)An independent Chinese journalist who reported from Wuhan at the height of the initial coronavirus outbreak has been jailed for four years by a Shanghai court, her lawyer said Monday.

Zhang Zhan, 37, was found guilty of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," according to one of her defense lawyers Zhang Keke, who attended her hearing. The offense is commonly used by the Chinese government to target dissidents and human rights activists.
I'd say your assumptions are correct.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2020/12...-many-parties/

A good example of a Covidiot doing stupid things in order to win stupid prizes. This young man won himself a one night stay in jail on Christmas Day after violating B.C.'s public health order twelve times. -fined twice in December for $2300 for each violation for hosting parties in his condo.

This Covidiot probably got himself a bigger chance to contract Covid in jail too.

The cops arrested the man after repeated refusals to obey the health order.

-from the article:

A man in Vancouver who chose to keep holding parties despite the ban on social gatherings in B.C. might have been the first one in the province to be arrested for it.

Police had been called to the 24-year-old man’s downtown apartment at least a dozen times because of noise and party complaints, and officers had been there six times since November. He was also fined $2,300 twice in December.

But it was a loud party on Dec. 18 that brought yet another noise complaint and prompted police to get a warrant.

The man was arrested on Christmas Day and charged with violating public health orders.

Addison said, as far as he knows, this is the first time this has happened in B.C., noting it was an “unusual step.”

The man was released the following day on bail.

“With bail comes a number of conditions that we’re hoping will encourage him a little bit more to obey the public health order,” Addison said.

Now the man has to open the door when he’s home and police knock, follow public health orders, and he is only allowed to have two people in his apartment at a time.

If the man doesn’t follow his conditions, he will be arrested, again.

Addison believes the police won’t have to visit the man again and reminds everyone else public health orders are to be taken seriously

Buy your booze before New Year's Eve, 8pm! Dr. Bonnie announced liquor purchase restrictions:

As of 8 p.m. Dec. 31, restaurants, pubs and retailers will not be able to sell or serve alcohol until 9 a.m. Jan. 1. In a last-minute telephone press conference, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the new provincial order is to manage concerns around parties. Meanwhile, 485 new cases have been identified and 11 people have died in the last 24 hours in B.C.

COVID itself has indirectly impacted me as I learned today my interior designer tested positive for COVID by contracting it through a client during a routine project visit.

Her clients were confirmed COVID positive on Xmas Eve (ouch) and she got her results this past Sunday. First world problems, but my renovations will be delayed further. Thankfully, she didn't visit me on the 19th of December as she was in the area and wanted to validate a few measurements but I was already out getting groceries/essentials, and wouldn't be back in time to meet with her. If she had come over, my post here may have been very different. Stay safe, everyone.

just fucked every restaurant in town that has prepared for NYE 8pm seatings. seatings that until 45 minutes ago were 100% legal (and safe)

the food and drink is bought, hell half the food is probably made.

why not announce this 2 weeks ago? and how will this have any impact whatsoever on private gatherings?

This last minute ban shows Bonnie Henry has zero clue what she's doing. Now people will drink at home with friends and there will be huge lineups at liquor stores with people in close proximity with each other.. Day by day her decisions are getting so pathetic and don't make sense what so ever.

What a fucking crock of shit. They couldn’t have done this a week ago when people weren’t sitting on thousands of dollars of wasted prep in every single restaurant. I’m happy we said we weren’t doing it this year, but to break it down for you, that move would have cost me about 5k in sales, $1500 in food waste, and about 80-100 wasted prep hours.

At least 3 restaurants around me were taking NYE reso's and all relatively fancy places with the promise of wine/cocktail pairings etc. And they seemed to be going ok

I would be fucking livid if I was them

What you're doing is punishing the tiny little guys who had to go out of their way to make plans and prep for this because cactus club may have a couple tables of buddy guys who aren't gonna listen to no mingling tables after they've had a few drinks. a travesty really

Another quick number crunch in my head. This will cost bearfoot bistro in Whistler about 25k. After the year places have had, this could be the straw that breaks the camels back. All they had to do is give fair warning and it could have been totally reasonable.

Leave it to the government to wait about 24 hours before NYE to announce this when they could've easily done this last week.

Everything that was on my mind was said by Westopher since we are pretty much in the same position...
I had to call every reservation and half moved their times earlier while the other half cancelled. We essentially lost an entire round of diners because of this BS...
What a way to end the year ...

I tried to support a local restaurant by ordering a NYE charcuterie menu they had created for takeout. Unfortunately, they were sold out so I hit Beast and Brine to grab a bunch of meats, cheeses, olives and spreads to build my own instead. Still supporting local.

The only slight bit of sense to doing it now is so people don't have the time to just stock up on booze for their house party ahead of time. Restaurants though I can't see why you wouldn't plan ahead, it doesn't seem like it should be much of a surprise to be in the position we are now.
