Are you saying that you should be expecting all restaurants to "plan ahead" and not have seating at 8pm even though we are allowed to serve until 10pm?
In that case why not take it a step further and plan even further ahead and just close the restaurant completely then?

Pretty easy to make it to the liquor store by 8pm tomorrow, it ain't like they are restricting how many bottles you can buy.

It's easy for individuals to change plans within 24 hours, just switch locations, or buy booze, you have an entire day to stock up. Restaurants? It takes more than 24 hours to plan for food and staff.
Liquor stores don't have the problem of keeping freshness if they don't sell it before 8pm tomorrow.

There's a lot of planning that needs to go into special menus, a lot of ordering, prep, labour, etc. Why would anyone possibly be able to predict they'd just slice a couple hours arbitrarily out of a day with no warning, while cases have gone down, and transmission rates are minimal within our part of the industry?

this is optics - "look, we tried"
they don't want people streaming onto granville again and giving Marcella Bernardo 3 months to bitch about it in the daily briefings.
all they had to do was give some notice. because they didn't it is absolutely a huge surprise and a huge kick in the gut to the restaurant industry. my local guys took prepayment too, that refund is going to be savage for them. the food waste alone is tragic.

I'm not saying I think it would even work or that I agree with it, just that it's the only shred of an attempt at a logical reason I can think of for doing it that way.

What a joke. We all know how harsh Canada is to punish people. The most they'll get is a slap on the wrist. No point in even writing that in there.

I don't understand why it is such a big deal if liquor sale ends at 8pm? People can still go out and enjoy themselves without booze, can they not? Can they not enjoy the company and the food? Do you need the alcohol to wash down the food? Or do you need the buzz to have fun?

What company? Your S/O you live with? Great lol
I can go out and have fun without booze but I’m not sitting at a restaurant for 4 hours without a drink, nor would I keep my reservation if I had a dinner reso at 8/9 and now I can’t have a drink at all during dinner. I ain’t some alchy but if I had planned to go for a nice dinner somewhere having a cocktail and a bottle of wine is a big part of a nice dinner for me. If that’s not gonna happen then I’d probably just rather chill at hone and make a dinner where I can drink
Also it’s not just about the customer not having a drink, it’s about losing the booze markup for the resty.

Can you go to a strip club and just enjoy the girls without drinks?
Can you go to a live Canucks game and just enjoy the hockey without drinks?
Can you go to a rave and just enjoy the LGs and music without drinks or e?
Can you go eat a NYE dinner and just enjoy the food and company without drinks?
Yea, you "can" but let's face it, most will just say fuck it.

I don't drink, never have, so this wouldnt affect my reservation, if I was going out to celebrate, but I'm not, I can see how it would irk a lot of ppl though
But they can bring their own alcohol to the restaurant can't they? I thought ppl were allowed to do that for the last few years

We have our bottle of bub ready to pop when the ball drops!
Good thing for the eastern channel package, we’ll be watching Times Square live at 9PM PST. It’s the only way we can stay up for it

there's no alcohol sales or service after 8pm. corkage is considered a service. they can't open your own bottle for you after 8
of course you can go out without boozing - but a curated, paired 5 course meal isn't what the chef had in mind when he put together the menu.
it's NYE. there will not be a table in the city that doesn't have a bottle on it.
split hairs from atop your teatotling high horse if you want to - this isn't about booze, it's about mismanagement. or it's about over management and a deliberate attempt to manipulate people into doing what you want them to do. either way, the restaurants suffer.
I guess it's time for my monthly reminder that small business is the lifeblood of your community. Not everybody gets to work from home, and not everyone gets a salary. Restaurant owners and managers tonight will lose thousands of dollars. Your neighbours who work in that industry and were counting on a paycheque may not get it. Chefs, servers, hosts, bartenders. These are your neighbours, trying to make rent and provide for others. They deserve as much job security as anybody else.
For as much as I love this city, this year the lack of empathy has really gotten to me. Far too many people have zero appreciation for the people around them, and what they are going through. Far too many people think the "hardship" on this subject is the people who can't go out tonight. That's simply an inconvenience. The hardship is on the industry that may not recover from this year. This tiny glimmer of a financial bump on the last day of the year is something I'm sure they have been looking forward to. A little breathing room - maybe enough to cover next months rent. Now they'll be lucky to break even w half the sittings tonight.
The province should buy back every ounce of booze they sold the restaurants for tonight - at full markup.

It’s fine if you don’t drink, but to look around you on planet earth and not understand, people enjoy having drinks with their dinner, and it’s a societal norm, you really aren’t paying attention.
Again, they wanted to do this? Fine. But not with less than a days notice. People put work into this shit.
I went out for dinner yesterday and chatted with my chef friend and he had put in 4 16 hour days just to set up for this. Now he’s worked twice as hard as he needed to, prepped twice as much food as he will sell, and will make half the income for all of that BEFORE you consider the food waste and labour involved. It’s the single most profitable night for an entire industry which would consider themselves lucky to be operating with a -3% profit for the last 9 months after having their revenue limited to half by restrictions put in place. This isn’t about your opinions on the experience, or your pat on the back about how you can “have fun without alcohol.”

Typical Canadian bandaid fix, they should have done a full dine in ban before the holidays like the other provinces. They are trying to play catch up again cuz they are afraid the numbers will skyrocket after the holidays, the new mutations, not like this will change anything.
