Yeah, the feds put in an immediate ban on all foreigners who travelled through these African countries:
The countries affected by the new ban include South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Eswatini. Anyone who has recently travelled to any of the nations is being asked to immediately self-isolate and get a COVID-19 test
The new measures put forth by federal officials are in effect immediately and will ban the entry of foreign nationals who have visited seven southern African nations in the last two weeks

Get vaccinated, put a mask on and get on with your lives because honestly this isn’t going away. Or build the bomb shelter and get your mr noodles and live out the rest of your lives in there waiting for it to go away.
Or don’t get vaccinated and either do that or get the freedom tube if you really want.

There will always be variants, there's variants of every virus we deal with on a regular basis from the common cold, to flu, etc.
What is the point in whipping people up about COVID variants? This virus will continue to be with us, and continue to evolve/change.
Seems such a waste of energy to worry about it IMHO.
The appearance of a variant is not scary in itself - that's why I posted that tweet thread from the doctor explaining that it could mean nothing. But it's still news because it has to be treated seriously, because unlike cold or flu variants, a particularly dangerous covid variants would put us in a world of hurt.
We don't know if this is one or not; it's probably not. But it could be, which is why many countries are blocking flights from Africa now.
Keeping up with covid news in the covid thread is not really fear porn... But I can see why shitty talk shows and bad faith news sources would use it to create that...

I think if you were here right now skinny and watching things like global news and shit you’d see what mike is talking about. I don’t disagree with its importance, but the tone and delivery of these types of events are absolutely sensationalist.

I've come to learn Global is pretty shitty as a news source. They are all about the clickbaits and you really need to sift through what they are trying to say.
They stopped using regional names for pretty obvious reasons, and I can't think of any good reason to argue against the change. If you can, go ahead and try, and make yourself look like a stupid asshole.

Makes discussion, tracking, investigating easier. Instead of having to research the source locale, it'd be right there in the name, then u can immediately consider regional affects/effects
There's also the risk of overlooking events because that regional connection isn't immediately made
Sure it may just be one, or two more steps, but that's besides the point
