I know lots of people who never lived to retirement, and a few that passed when they'd barely started working. My kids have basically been stuck with just my wife (who is awesome) and my stupid ass their entire lives. Older kids had a massive shift in their lives that's gotta be brutal too, I can't imagine how hard that is socially.

| coronavirus discussion
Dr. Henry also made comments about the variability in symptoms for people who have Omicron.
She said it it is not necessarily the case that people with Omicron only have mild symptoms.
She said that in her discussions with infectious disease experts in Quebec, countries like UK and other nations, the severity of Omicron can be mild or worse for any person.
-good for her to mention that info. in response to some people’s post online about it being mild.
Some people these days just believe what people post on Reddit and YouTube about Covid and it’s variants.

people would be more inclined to not tune herand dix and tam etc. if they rationalize the restrictions
ie. why casinos & half of rogers arena over gyms and funerals, sure there's logically less ventilation in smaller indoor spaces but show us the hard data to back it up
and even when variants weren't as virulent as omicron she repeatedly gives almost no notice to industries before lockdowns

We knew this, but there are still lots of people that think they will somehow dodge covid.
It's a refreshing realistic take - wonder if it was off script. | I've started seeing articles talking about how something like Omicron was inevitable as viruses don't necessarily want to kill its hosts too often. At some point they just want to survive so the virus mutates in a way that it hurts but doesn't kill the host. Delta is winning with the unvaxxed while Omicron is winning with the vaxxed but because there are relatively few unvaxxed Delta is now 2nd place amongst COVID variants.
Presumably a milder version of COVID eventually shows up and we just end up having to live with it - something comparable to flu viruses or other SARS viruses. This is something they've been saying since the beginning but it wasn't the headline.

I can go to a casino right now and play 9 handed poker sitting shoulder to shoulder with 8 other people and a dealer (10 people total) at one table all touching the same chips and cards passing them around the table lol.

The illegal NYE parties in private residences are my biggest concern in terms of super spreader venues of Omicron.
If that motherfucker Mo of Telus Gardens hosts another NYE party in his penthouse AGAIN, VPD needs to lock his ass up for a long time. Our justice system cannot be soft with this guy. $15,000 fines are not enough to deter guys like Mohammad Movassaghi from hosting parties at his penthouse for big profits.
Mo needs to learn a big lesson from our court system. How about putting Mo in prison for a month if he decides to host another NYE party in his penthouse?
Mo can celebrate NYE in prison.

He’s just the poster child for it. I’m sure there are people all over hosting huge gatherings.
Outside of not being face to face with people not really sure how a yaletown earls completely jammed with hundreds of people at every table, maskless, is much different than any other indoor gathering. There’s plenty of evidence of the virus being airborne etc. for a long time after a person has been in an area, and given the constant coming and goings of a restaurant and the fact windows, doors, other entry points are constantly in use it’s pretty much impossible to exchange all the air within spaces like that

Yah those things are happening all over the place... heck... my previous neighbour (a renter) at my condo had a full out beer pong tables rager one night during the height of COVID that the building security called the police on but he wasn't in the paper.
That Mo dude just fucked up being the loudest one and trying to gain clout around town/make money off it.

I can kinda understand the hockey game thing, its massive open structure and several stories high ceiling.
I’m more choked why I can sit for hours and play cards but not wear a mask and lift weights. Those are much more similar to me.

Encouraging development in South Africa. Cases are plunging and it seems like the wave might be a short one (blue line cases, red line deaths).
" The drop in new cases nationally combined with the sustained drop in new cases seen here in Gauteng province, which for weeks has been the center of this wave, indicates that we are past the peak," Marta Nunes, senior researcher at the Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics department of the University of Witwatersrand, told The AP.
"It was a short wave...and the good news is that it was not very severe in terms of hospitalizations and deaths," she said. It is "not unexpected in epidemiology that a very steep increase, like what we saw in November, is followed by a steep decrease."
South Africa's R-naught rate, which has been falling since the start of December, has finally broken back below 1. |

With my completely uninformed opinion, I gotta say, this kinda feels like the beginning of the end of Covid (hopefully)
Want short term pain for long term gain? Let society live life and get infected.

This variant might have even decided that for us. Unless we go full JDMdreams, we are still gonna get exposed to it. If it’s transmissible enough to get through the lines of defence, maybe this will be the end. I certainly hope the people we care about aren’t the collateral damage though.

When I saw that news this morning, the first thing that came to mind was -- what has S.Africa done to change the trajectory of the new Omicron cases? Is Omicron just fizzling out on its own? Did S.Africa impose some sort of anti-COVID measure, esp if they are novel?
Since Omicron's emergence, the only certainty that I can establish from various reputable media sources is its hyper transmissibility. Even among the reputable news sources, there are differing and somewhat contradictory reports from different parts of the world on its virulence. So I can't get an accurate reading on WTH is going on with this variant. Quote:

Study just came out that Omicron is milder than Delta (as we'd suspected) however it's WAY more contagious. And "milder" doesn't mean "doesn't really matter" to people who are susceptible.
UK is over 100K per day now, and even if it's milder, it's still a huge issue. what's happening there WILL happen around the world.. By ratio, US will be getting 500K cases per day, about twice as their highest amount during the peak.
It's crucial that people get their 3rd vaccine, especially if they're in a risk group for getting hit hard by covid. Noting will stop this from being a huge wave, but efforts should be taken to slow it as much as possible, and prevent hospitals from getting destroyed. |

Resistance is futile ...
Trying to NOT get omicron may be the wrong strategy if you're double vaccinated. If you're double vaccinated, stats are on your side, hope that it's mild and you don't have to be hospitalized. Out for 2-3 days over the holidays ... then you'll be ready and super-immunized for the sigma variant.
I'm seriously thinking of NOT getting 3rd shot ... you're going to get Covid, it's just a matter of when.

YES we all want the booster, but most of us under-65 or non-CEV in BC aren't even going to be getting invites until January! My parents only got theirs this Weekend, for instance. Quote:

If you don't get sick you still have immunity (your body just fights it off more effectively) plus you'll have the added benefit of not spreading it around to those less equipped to deal with it.
