So stupid... What do they hope to achieve with this random testing?

Liquid_o2 07-14-2022 11:37 AM

Just when I'm traveling to the U.S. for work for the first time in 2.5 years :okay:

Teriyaki 07-14-2022 12:01 PM

Heres what I think happened.

They (Government) signed a terribly lopsided agreement with the testing provider during the height of the pandemic. Remember, money was just being printed out and doled out like no tomorrow during this period.

They ended the contract. But now provider is coming back to say something long the lines of " hey remember that original contract? You're still gonna need to pay is xxx Millions even if we don't staff anyone or do anything" . Government goes shit. " Well we're gonna do this thing that we already paid way too much for, and we'll say we're doing something against new variants or whatever "

whitev70r 07-14-2022 12:24 PM

^ Probably. Can't blame them ... if gov't didn't do enough, people would scream. If gov't over estimated any service or things, then they are caught holding the bag.

Case in point are those rapid tests ... I think Canadian government ordered like a billion of them and initially, it was like one per adult per month, now they are giving it away like Halloween candy. But with the late summer/fall surge coming, these rapid tests will come back in handy.

BlackV62K2 07-14-2022 12:57 PM

Haven't picked up rapid tests kit since Mar and went to get a kit the other day to have one handy with the rising cases and was pulling out my driver's license for my medical number and they handed me two boxes without anything

Hondaracer 07-14-2022 12:58 PM

Hey don’t worry, it’s just like arrivecan. Just do your duty as a citizen and spend 6 hours in the lineup on each leg of your trip. Not a big deal, it’s just a random test

JDMDreams 07-14-2022 01:03 PM

I'm sure they know shits hitting the fan and they just haven't announced it yet. Or why else are they all of a sudden announcing 4 th shot best summer ever! No restrictions freedom bro

westopher 07-14-2022 01:38 PM

ArriveCAN is way less hassle than this. It’s like the menu on a QR code thing. Everyone pulling 9 hours of screen time a day and they have a meltdown about dedicating 90 seconds more.

JDMDreams 07-14-2022 02:17 PM

Arrive can is so easy just set it up once, just gotta remember your password cuz it logs you out

Yup............ except two weeks ago, the app asked me all kinds of questions I thought I had answered before. I started off exactly the same way. I mean I've used ArriveCAN every week sometimes twice a week since the border reopened. Anyway, long story short, now when I log in, I have two identical accounts. Like WTF? As soon as this happened, the first time I crossed back, I got the random test kit. Last Monday, it was like nothing happened. I ask the border guard if there was a record of my test results. He confirmed it was on the profile.

As I posted before, the test is pretty easy. Register, then don't make any appointments. Call a Shoppers Drug Mart that offers the swab service and go. I was told to just come in that day. Results took just over a day. No cost involved.

Lol how is this possibly less hassle? The random testing is like 1 person per flight in my experience

westopher 07-14-2022 04:02 PM

Have you had a fuckin random test? I have, and it was a fuck of a lot more of my time wasted than the 90 seconds I spent on a 2 day trip uploading a photo. Do you need me to show you how to work the VCR too?

68style 07-14-2022 04:16 PM

They're both totally pointless at this juncture.

The only people I can think of who would support ArriveCAN right now are like parents with kids who find it easier to keep all the documents stored in 1 place rather than carrying paper copies around and losing shit.

I am constantly across the border and I'm getting pretty tired of pointlessly clicking through the menus and guessing my re-crossing time for absolutely no actual purpose that I can see. Yah it's simple and takes like 2 minutes or less but it's also super stupid.

You were the one unlucky one, sucks. But everyone has to use the arrivecan app. What slows everything down isn’t the app itself, it’s people who don’t understand the requirement and now are filling it out at customs or don’t even have it downloaded period.

That scenario has the potential to create farrrr more headache for your average person than the random testing.

I swear this random testing being reinstated is just the govt.running out of ideas on how to solve the airport situation and now instead of enacting meaningful action you just add more deterants to travel in hopes that stems the congestion

donk. 07-14-2022 05:36 PM

This was brought up before, but here's some even more recent data showing that Covid has basically replaced influenza (Hong Kong data)

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FX2toqhaMAAaMf6.jpg

BTW peak numbers here are 740 people, to a peak of 1100 people hospitalized by influenza per month, a flashback for the "why weren't we this scared of the flu?/the flu is just as deadly" people (do they still exist?)

BIC_BAWS 07-17-2022 06:19 AM

So it turns out you don't have to report your test results anymore. But how do they collect data then? I finally got the Rona. I thought I was invincible or smt. Had 5 close calls over the years. But nope, finally got it.

I think the worst part is just the body aches and the hot/cold flashes.

o shit, sounds like you got a worse version than when i got mine. mine was pretty mild, low grade fever, sore throat, runny nose and coughing. Almost like a run of the mill flu

Waste water testing. They're using that to track and project.

Off topic but thought I’d ask here:

Anyone have recommendations for places to get PCR testing for travel?

Lifelabs was cheapest a few months ago ($150 tax in I think), and they don't do the bullshit some of the other clinics do where they're like "Oh, you need a PRINTED copy? Well, that's $80 more then."

The only thing with Lifelabs is the entire process is suuuper fucking convoluted. You need to go in, make an account in Lifelabs for whomever is flying, enter ALL their info, then pay for your test. They then send you a code, which you use to book an appointment at other clinics (LD, Shoppers, etc.), but then you need to bring a requisition form that they send you by email. It took me almost an hour to do it properly, because their website is a shitshow, there are like 16 critical steps, and none of them are clear.

I am 100% certain my 60+ mom would never have been able to do it alone.

Where's a PCR test down there that's pretty straightforward? I've got some older relatives needing them for a cruise out of there in a couple weeks. Alternatively somewhere in Naniamo since that's where they're coming from.

4 places in Nanaimo, try their individual websites.
