What do you guys think will happen in the fall? There is prediction of uptick come fall ... and then 4th shot promo coming out. You all know how many people are testing +'ve nowadays. Any guesses?
Much of the same ... as is. Or, PHO suggestions to mask up. Or, required masking in certain public places like transit, etc.?

3rd world places have all but given up testing so their only indicator is hospitalizations which are also generally down.
There are places in the world in winter right now obviously who don’t seem to be seeing the uptick. I highly doubt we will ever go back to any sort of public health orders. People simply won’t be following them. If you thought the passports etc. before were killing business, wait until the next time lol
If you’re vulnerable, sorry but stay home.
Btw, my wife has a colleague who’s entering this expedited nursing program at UBC which is full time, 7 days a week, for 18 months. So seems like they are at least trying to fill some voids

After avoiding covid here the entire time, including several coworkers getting it, my sister went to Canada last week and got it IMMEDIATELY . She's fine after a few days
In other news from this side of the world, HK is changing their insanely strict 7 day mandatory hotel quarantine to 3 days hotel + 4 days home monitoring. Still have to take a rapid test daily, and several PCR tests throughout the week. You can go to work and school during this time, but you won't be able to go into restaurants and other places that require check ins.
Having any quarantine at all is pointless now, but I guess this is better than the old way.

Registered nurses start at $36.23 and caps out at $47.58 after 9 years.

They could solve the nursing issue simply by offering proper, affordable childcare. When 70% of your workforce is women of childbearing age, it’s pretty fucking easy to see how many go on maternity leave and never go back.

What's the overtime rate for nurses though? I would think a lot of nurses are doing OT because of the shortage so they make a lot more, but work shitty long hours

It's hard work man, cleaning pee poop for 12+ hours plus deal with dumbass anti maskers and anti vaxers. I know they get extra pay for night shift. But yea it's very taxing on you.

Nurses can make bank though.
My GF clears about $120K yearly working at VGH, with some OT (not tons, although there's lots available if you want it).

Everyone on RS makes 200k after taxes though so that’s a poverty wage.
My wife never picks up OT and she made like 98k last year I think?

My wife never picks up OT and she made like 98k last year I think? | Your wife has reached the cap or really close to it with those earnings.
With the numerous calculations on these forums with wages and being able to afford to buy a place in Vancouver/Burnaby, being a nurse ain't one of those jobs that will get you there.

No jobs will get you there is the point.
You need
A) 2 of those jobs in a household
B) money given to you
C) to be in the top 3% of income earners in canada
You also are missing that the cap of 47.xx doesn’t include shift differential, double time or triple time for holidays, work short premium, all of when you add them up get to an extra 5-10k a year.

No one can buy a house on a single income without some help.
Even with dual income it's hard. I haven't been ashamed to say we've gotten some help with buying our house. We could however definitely afford a duplex on our own though. A house is within reach, but with our budget it wouldn't be a house we want to live in.

^ uhm...wrong thread? How did Covid discussion turn into another RE thread? LOL
Earn 120K sitting on your butt at home writing emails and taking zoom calls for maybe 4 or 5 hours a day max. And fucking off the rest on RS.
or
Earn 120K for 10 hour shifts on your feet cleaning up shit, piss, bodily fluids, getting harassed, threats of assault, actually getting assaulted. Seeing people sick, some people die. Basically being present for the worst days of some people's lives.
I don't know about you guys but it seems like a no brainer to me. Nurses should be getting 300K minimum for the insanity they deal with.

^ this type of comparison is what I'm eluding to. If someone is going to go through a career change, changing to nursing isn't really a good choice.
Just the thought of every nurse in BC (using this loosely because private pays differently) earning the same wage whether they work in Vancouver or they work in Chilliwack results in the Vancouver nurse being poorer because of the cost of shelter. I'm sure plenty of nurses (or even health care workers as a whole) would rather work close to home than commute 40+ mins to work if they earn the same wage.

Not entirely true.
Nurses can make big bank if they take a contract abroad (my gf is actually in the process of facilitating that). I work from home, so it's immaterial to me.
A friend of mine quit her job at St Paul's earlier this year and took a contract at a hospital in San Antonio, TX. She's making almost $10K a week with room and board paid for. She's renting her condo out here in Vancouver and in a year will have enough to make a down payment on a bigger place in Vancouver if she chooses to do so.
That's the real concern here for our health system, too many doctors and nurses are peacing out and heading abroad for better pay. We're going through a definitive brain drain right now.

You guys have to understand as well, that 120k wfh jobs don’t grow on trees, where healthcare jobs, kinda do.

It's pretty reasonable to assume, when someone tells you what they make, and it sounds high, they likely are a fucking liar.
There's a reason that median wages are lower than what every single person you know tells you they make. Because one is real and one isn't.

Man what a world we live in now. Turning 40 this year and growing up heck even in my late 20's early 30's the thought of making 6 figures even if it was just 100k even felt like I would have "made it" and I guess while stats for avg income would probably say it still is the reality is in Vancouver it's shit. Sigh
So back to the corona thing has everyone pretty much just moved on and living life completely pre pandemic normal? Or do you still practice certain precautions depending on the situation? Has the pandemic changed for example what you would have previously considered a crowd as not busy but now you're like fuck that's way too many people for my liking?
