So when the first vaccines came out they all threw out efficacy rates (95%, etc) as soon as they could.
Now these new ones are out and I'm not hearing a peep about their efficacy. Am I just not reading the right sources?

Then you got the variants, which dropped the efficacy rates, and then suddenly telling people it's only 40% effective doesn't sound as nice, and maybe will get people thinking "well I'm not gonna take it then".
I'm sure it's a hodgepodge of public health policy, marketing, social engineering, whatever. The new ones are supposed to be better against the Omicron variants though.

We had this discussion before ... initially the efficacy rate was understood as (or implied to be) prevention rate ... which is the understanding of most vaccines. But what really happened in real life was that the vaccines reduced the severity of symptoms and (now looking back obvious) not a % to reflect prevention. But nevertheless, I much rather be out for 5-7 days with flu-like symptoms with the vaccine than risk having to go in the ICU or ventilator, etc.

We had a family friend come visit from Ireland back in June, he's an elderly fellow that had no idea about ArriveCan.
He arrives without it completed in YVR and customs were going to slap him with a 14-day quarantine for failing to complete the app. The man is triple vaxed as well. Luckily he was able to plead his case to the officer and they gave him a pass.
But what if they didn't? What a way to waste 2 weeks of your trip simply for failing to complete a stupid process in which such information can be gathered via customs in the first place?

It’s for sure a pain in the ass for SOME people, but the fact remains that most of the people complaining, it isn’t a big issue for, and they really don’t give a shit about things being issues for other people.
Like the antivaxxers trying to act like they are protecting peoples rights and freedoms when they just don’t want a little needle because being told what to do hurts their feelings.

I’ll die on a few hills in favour of mask and vaccine mandates… but ArriveCAN can go back to the fiery pits from whence it came as far as I’m concerned.
Signed,

They're supposed to check if all your papers are in order before they even check you in. It's no difference if you showed up without the proper visa/passport/whatever the country needs. The airline is just as culpable for leading him on.

How are we supposed to make a quantitive judgement that the new Bivalent vaccine is better than another OG vaccine if they don't release the numbers? Even if it is Apples to Oranges numbers now, we have enough data to make a proper comparison now I'd hope.

I'll die on the QR code restaurant menu hill.
I fucking hate looking at menus on my phone. I always ask for paper menus, and when they don't have them I've literally walked out.
What a stupid consequence of the pandemic, all because at the beginning people thought they could catch covid from touching a piece of paper.

I'm in the generation of growing up on tech so I'm usually all for digital options. That said, I much prefer the physical menu over the QR code. It's just easier to scan and flipping pages than trying to do it on my phone. Sometimes it can be annoying like I might have to pinch to zoom in and shit too. It's like how some people prefer reading a physical book over newspaper I guess over doing it on a tablet or other electronic device. That said, I don't really care if the option isn't there I'm just saying given the choice I prefer hard copy.
Side note I remember my last phone (I think it was a Pixel) didn't actually have a QR reader built into the default camera like my phone does now so I had to purposely download a QR read app, first world problems.

By the time the messaging gets to the masses it gets so dumbed to be understandable.
I've resorted to reading preprint studies. I haven't seen anything yet with the New bivalent vaccines but here's one that tested up to 2 RNA boosters and compared it from OG covid to BA5. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20...9-vaccine.aspx
Conclusion: The study findings showed that four COVID-19 mRNA vaccine doses did not efficiently neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 sublineage. However, there was sufficient vaccine-induced neutralization in the sera obtained after BA.5 breakthrough infection. The researchers believe that there is an urgent need for an updated COVID-19 vaccine that neutralizes the highly immune evasive SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 sublineage.

What a stupid consequence of the pandemic, all because at the beginning people thought they could catch covid from touching a piece of paper. | I agree but I will share one cool anecdote: having a full menu on your phone that can be translated by google makes it easier if you're in a country where you can't read everything.

I actually prefer the QR code menu.. just makes sense to me and some huge menus out there that can take up the whole table are annoying. Give me that table space! To each their own I suppose..

Also costs less to only maintain a digital menu, and can easily change your menu items.

Damn... holy shit everyone making 100K per person, and I am with 65k on a single income LOL... WTF... feel bad for my kids, I guess we are really just surviving below poverty standards of living...
Back on topic, we still mask up as a family when visiting malls, we skipped fireworks and canada day celebrations cuz wife thinks its not worth the risk... I am kinda bummed tbh, I love crowds and meets, but as she states, not worth the risk, especially being the single income owner, not gonna work out great if i go down haha
