“Even if you have mild symptoms, or if you have no symptoms and you have returned from travel, you don’t need testing. We want to make sure that people with no symptoms understand they don’t need to be tested for COVID-19.”

LOL, because of lack of initial action against this virus, now there will be a great number of cases undetected/ unmonitored. People travelling who MAY be positive for covid-19 but showing mild symptoms won't be tested and are going out to spread the virus to the poor senior down the street, on the bus, at work, or at the pharmacy because the potential carrier himself is ONLY presenting with MILD symptoms.

And I'm sure people are going to follow that strictly when they haven't been tested.
Especially when they won't receive pay.
Lmao.

If they test positive you want the government to lock them up? Your boss has to be an idiot to let you work right after you come back from abroad.

Hey don't worry, I'm sure everyone who's been outside Canada will just lock themselves in their basement 24/7, for two weeks, when they show minimal to no symptoms and have no idea whether they're positive or negative.

I guess the numbers won't climb because nobody will know what they are

There's literally no way to do enough tests to make them useful enough to "flatten the curve". Until someone invents one that is basically instant - and actually reliable - this is what has to be done for now.

People are focusing way too much on testing. It would be nice to be able to do it (and act upon the results) but it's not feasible at this time

France shutdown everything deemed non essential overnight

Grocery stores, pharmacists, gas stations, tobacco shops (corner stores), banks are considered essential

Said ppl weren't heeding the warnings/advice so they had to

Same with Spain which has the largest outbreak behind Italy

For people who still think this wuhan virus is nonsense... take a look at what extreme measures China/Italy/just today Spain are taking in order to stop this.

All the drop in consumptions is going to hurt our economy, and dare I say worldwide for the next 2 quarters and pushing pretty much every major economy into a technical recession if they aren't in one. This is a true black swan.

I'm not saying test everyone, but Jesus, test the people coming back into the country.
At least then they'll know if they need to quarantine or not.
Telling people to just self isolate without them knowing whether they need to or not is just irresponsible.
Other countries that don't have Canada's "fiscal firepower" (Morneau's words, not mine) have been able to test much more. Why aren't we?

Washington State I believe has the highest number of cases in the US. Tens of thousands of British Columbians have probably gone and come from there since their outbreak. And more will. You think they're all going to self isolate?

Scientists of the UK write a open letter to the gov't stating their strategy of spreading out the virus, and allowing for some to contract the virus to build a basic lvl of community immunity as irresponsible and risks lives

What is the government waiting for? Next friday? Confirm cases to reach 1000?

We can start gradually shutting things down like schools, close non essential business, ban international and national flights.

A controlled closure just so the dust settles for awhile.

You can’t just abandon people abroad. There is warning going out now to get home ASAP because of the measures being taken

Closing non essential business as well is going to crippleeeeee people’s livelihoods. When you start forcibly closing business all the while people still have to pay their bills, mortgage etc. Those are worst case measures not somthing you just follow suit with other countries for for the sake of it.

Given the economical impact this can have, this is probably a major factor in the government's decision-making.

I want you to think like a politician for a second. To you, every one of us is just a number. That's it.

Who are the most vulnerable to the virus? The old and the weak. If you are a politician, you don't care about those people. They are a burden to you. Heck, it's a good opportunity to decrease the number of these people. All you need to worry about is "flattening the curve" when it comes to people.

I apologize if I sound like a dick, but I am just trying to put myself in a politician's shoes to see this. As an individual, we all have loved ones we don't want to lose, but a politician will have different interests in mind. Economy, votes, etc. are the main factors in their mind.

Take a look at the UK's "fuck it" approach. They basically decide to not even bother to do anything other than shielding the old and the weak. Sacrifices will be made along the way, but it's for "the greater good" if their strategy works.

In other news, Alberta seems to be taking some actions. My local gym shut down today, and I was asked by my boss to work from home starting Monday.

That's just scummy, but not much you can do to stop it. I can only imagine asking whoever manages the parking lot to tell them to fuck off.

I have read that Kijiji has banned toilet paper, wipes, etc. ads, but that's more popular around where I live in Alberta. On the west coast, Craigslist is far more prevalent.

Lmao.
I was at service Canada with a friend and over heard a Chinese talking on the phone saying he just came back to Canada from China and went straight to service Canada with his friend (he wasn't alone) to get sin Card and that afterwards he will go home, take a shower and meet up. This was back Feb. So much for self quarantine…… coz that's going to work. Unless you have people isolate in a military camp or have a GPS ankle bracelet on them there is no way to 100% to sure everyone will follow the self quarantine rule.

Amazon pulled his items and thousands of other listings for sanitizer, wipes and face masks. The company suspended some of the sellers behind the listings and warned many others that if they kept running up prices, they’d lose their accounts. EBay soon followed with even stricter measures, prohibiting any U.S. sales of masks or sanitizer.

Now, while millions of people across the country search in vain for hand sanitizer to protect themselves from the spread of the coronavirus, Mr. Colvin is sitting on 17,700 bottles of the stuff with little idea where to sell them.
lol, serves him right. Fuck these people.

But now I guess no one can get them...

You know what's going to happen to US & Canada which I think is quite different in China is the retail / living sector.

There will be a LOT of people living thru paychecks to paychecks + retail + min. wage jobs are going to get hit HARD.....

-getting laid off, mom and pop shops and service industries... are going to hurt.

I do hope people realize the importance of having an emergency fund.

Apple store + Michael Kors etc are closing / limited hours. Trickle effects from servers... will have hours reduced and people aren't able to find jobs....

Exactly this. Mom's friend had a funeral sometime in Feb and people from China came for a week to pay their respects. Some were told to self isolate, but guess what? They went to the funeral the next morning and went all over the place. Like I said before, if people are asymptomatic and told to self isolate while on vacation, what do you think the likelihood of them are going to listen and "waste" their vacation days?

I won't make a blanket statement that all politicians are like that, but certainly ones like that do exist.

I am sure we would love for the governments to divert all resources possible to put an end to this virus, and say there's not a single life not worth saving.

But at the end of the day, our resources are finite, and unless all the hyper-rich of the world decides to pool their wealth together and help out, it would be a tough job to save and everyone and not screw up the economy.

I am sure the impact of the economy right now goes well beyond what we can see immediately, possibly extending to quite some time after this.
