Spoiler!

Yeah it really seems like a lost skill. My wife and I both learned to do it with our parents when we were kids so we do it together now every couple of years (about as long as our pickles last us). Pickle canning isn't hard, but canning tomatoes or meat/fish is a different story. I could totally see newbs fucking this up and not using a pressure canner, or using it improperly.

Most are probably working in retail/F&B's where they technically are out of a job.

Why you need to wash with soap for 20 seconds and not 5:

Stuff like this is what should be forwarded around

I have a friend who works for Save On, regional manager level and he said the warehouses aren't big enough to keep up with the demand but he also said some items are running out because there's more demand than supply. He also said they put limits but impossible to enfore because people are threaten staff.

I really think it's coming to a point where we need to deploy police to force limits because there's a lot of people who need certain foods for medical reasons and there's those who have kids especially newborns that need essentials. We're basically heading towards civil unrest if we don't enforce limits.

bcedhk 03-18-2020 01:46 PM

Mayor Stewart is trying to work with retailers to take action on the over-buying... but not sure how effecitve that will be or whether it will actually be ready during the peak of this pandemic.

Rallydrv 03-18-2020 01:48 PM

people are breaking in medical facilities to steal n95 and hand sanitizers. this leaves front line responders more venerable. not sure they are stealing for themselves or for profit. i hope police curtail this behavior fast .

SkinnyPupp 03-18-2020 02:03 PM

Taiwan has never had more than 50 cases, but in the last 2 days it has shot up to 100. All but 2 of them are incoming travelers.

Hong Kong was at around 100 for most of the time, but we're at 180 now. All but 4 were incoming travelers.

Singapore had 47 new cases yesterday, 33 from travelers. This is the scariest one

I have been yelling at everyone who will listen in these three "success story" countries - IT IS NOT OVER! STOP "LIVING YOUR LIFE" LIKE NORMAL! WutFace

Most people don't have access to and don't have the money to purchase wild animals like that. Underground markets, like I mentioned, will always exist. You can't eliminate them, period.

Sorry, this is a misconception. Every wet market you go to will have funky critters to sell. Some for food, some for TCM. Pangolins are not only eaten, but their scales are used in TCM.

And for those who want this stuff banned, forget about it. If moral obligation was more important than nationalism in China, it would have been banned a long time ago. Rhino poaching would have been banned. Bear torture would have been banned. They DID ban ivory trade a few years ago - only because it's not used in TCM. So they do know this stuff is wrong, they are just unwilling to give up on TCM.

The only thing that would get this shit to stop would be the banning of TCM. And you can forget about that from ever happening. Chinese govt promotes it like crazy, at the very least for nationalistic propaganda purposes. They want to promote it as the de-facto medicine practice in the nations they are developing throughout Africa and the rest of the world. Hell, they even had WHO remove their advisory not to rely on herbal medication for Coronavirus. Even now, with wildlife trade banned in China, they allow some animals to continue to be traded, for TCM purposes. This loophole is of course being abused to continue smuggling animals. FailFish

Hasn't China imposed a ban on exotic meats?

Wasn’t there a same ban during SARS and then it was lifted?
Also, underground wild life trade could happen.

There are many other wet markets worldwide, like in Indonesia. Wet markets should be banned worldwide with jail time if caught.

I edited my post after you replied: Even now, with wildlife trade banned in China, they allow some animals to continue to be traded, for TCM purposes. This loophole is of course being abused to continue smuggling animals.

I'll try to find a good English source for this

Edit: China’s Ban on Wildlife Trade a Big Step, but Has Loopholes, Conservationists Say (soft paywall unfortunately)

There are some cases - it happened in Kobe, Japan early on in the outbreak, and in France.

striderblade 03-18-2020 02:40 PM

Another 45 new cases today

Straight up, and I don’t think this is that far fetched, if there is ever a major earth quake here you’re gonna wish you had a fire arm.

Like legit, might get to the point of having to shoot Somone, especially for business owners etc. People are too fucking stupid to be reasoned with
