where are people going when most places are closed? many still have to go to work but probably many are also servicing their vehicles because they suddenly have too much time

I think going for drives is actually a great way to socially distance yourself. I'm personally going to go for some drives this weekend with the family, let the kids run around some areas (not playgrounds).

It is all so much more complicated than black and white "essential vs non essential"

The lease on my truck is coming up in a couple of months. What do I do when my lease is up if dealerships are closed? Keep driving a truck I don't own? How do I lease a new one?

Where is the line drawn on essential services. What happens when a pipe bursts in my house? Is a plumber essential? How about an electrician? What about HVAC if my furnace dies? What if Im in healthcare and my car dies, are mechanics essential?

Yeah, driving alone is a good way to relax for some.

The only thing to add is that when you refuel, make sure to watch out at pumps, seeing how many hands touch those. Use gloves/napkins/sanitizer when you use those.

For actual repairs they're important, but the vast majority of work done at a dealer is optional/preventative and can easily be postponed (like all the idiots now wanting an oil change and detail done). Bodywork definitely isn't essential.

Please for the people who works at home currently most work doesn't require anything over a 100mbps connection even if your work said you need at least 150. They just put it in place in case people are using some crap ass internet connection IE 5mbps connection. So don't get mad at us when we try to get a bit more info what type of work you are doing at home. We only ask because we are currently only doing new install and no service service calls. Upgrade is on a case by case and if your work doesn't require fast internet (IE general admins work vs intense 3D graphics) we will book the upgrade the 3D graphics but not the admin work. Our tech are running on a rotating schedule so we are down to about half of the techs working. Call wait time have also gone up coz everyone is calling to upgrade or add more channels. If you can do it though FB, TW and email. That way we can take a call while answering online message. Oh and screaming and yelling at us won't get what you want so there is no point.

Some people just have some twisted minds.

Met with a friend of mine yesterday to give him some supplies I bought extra (can food), he was clearly in a rush. So I asked him what's the matter?

he replied: "I've gotta get back home to download some pr0n before pornhub goes down".

Priorities I guess...

NO ONE is going to make the decision for you. YOU need to make that call.
Think about who is in your household or immediate contact, and If they have any underlying issues.
Healthcare is becoming and will quickly progress to overwhelm. They will be prioritizing.

Customers at my work were still bringing their vehicles in for things that were absolutely not critical.
The employees were concerned but worried about disrupting the routine.
If one person steps up and says to their boss "I'm concerned about who i may spread this thing to if i continue to work here", others will follow and soon it won't be tenable to keep the doors open.
The more doors that close, the less services will be available for people to just go about daily life and risk spreading this.

I hold my work in the highest regard, and i am a critical component of my workplace.
There are many workers there over the age of 70 still going in. Sometimes you have to force the hand when people won't do it on their own.
I could live with making a decision that others there may be upset over. But not the repercussions of ignoring a decision i should have made.

If you're in that same boat, please think of those things. Thank you.
Unfortunately, CADA wants to mark car dealerships as an essential service. I'm more than onboard with doing critical repairs or reduced hours, but right now it feels like people are bringing their vehicles in for non-essential maintenance because they're WFH and have too much time on their hands. But I'm infinitely more concerned about the people coming in as if nothing is wrong, or outright refuting the presented information as bullshit.

How do you expect that Americans who are worried about Covid 19 to have confidence in Donny boy when he goes EMO against some members of the press?

This is what I was talking about a few pages back. The REAL people who make things work are the "regular people". It's not the bankers, hedge fund managers, investors. It's the Delivery workers, car repairmen, ISP technicians, grocery store workers, cooks at restaurants, etc.

Hopefully these people - who BTW are WAY more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck without the ability to "save for a rainy day" and get proper health care when they need it most - get some recognition after this. And maybe after this, countries like USA will do something to help these people do better in life, rather than the bankers. Bail out these folks, not the billionaires.

There's my rant for the day

Telecom techs now attempting to do customer guided installs without going into homes. Frankly easier said than done, especially with older DSL installs etc.

Committed to keeping life lines and internet services up and running with no mention of layoffs etc. However, as we know things can change day by day. Luckily for myself I don’t have to go into peoples homes but even going into apartment buildings etc still feels somewhat daunting to me For our technicians and I’m about as far from a germaphobe etc as you can get

Be kind to technicians and understand their reluctance to come into your home to fix your “slow wifi”

Edit* Skinny is one of the first people I’ve seen actually recognize telecom techs when a lot of celebs and media types are thanking different professions and industries which frankly have very limited if any contact with the general public

An interesting graph, showing all the cases in Hong Kong, and where they came from

It shows us the results of the swift action taken by: General population - wearing masks, social distancing: The government - immediately shutting down schools, public facilities, all govt employees work from home: AND the healthcare workers forcing them to shut the borders to China.

However this month we're getting a huge influx of cases - some are calling this "phase 2" but this is all phase 1 to me - of people coming to the "safer" part of the world from the virus effected places around the world.

This isn't a "hate post" but these people tend to not be as cautious as the locals. They are much less likely to wear masks and keep social distancing. There was a famous picture taken from Lan Kwai Fong of all these expats crowded, partying, none wearing masks at all. Meanwhile everyone else has given up on having a social life for now.

As I mentioned yesterday, I can't even go to the gym anymore. Not because it's closed (yet) and not because of the specific people I see there, but perhaps they are in contact with one of these idiots. I have a friend who is in quarantine now, because someone came to her salon that tested positive. So now she's in isolation and can't work even if she wanted to. If she was in another part of town, there would be a much lower chance of this happening.

My wife deals with people from these places, and all her staff complain that a lot of them don't wear masks. I'm worried that if ONE of her staff gets sick, they'll have to shut the whole thing down. Which is bad because they're a charity org. (animal shelter) and it will be tough to take care of the dogs, let alone finding them homes.

I think there will be some racism coming out of this. That famous picture, and this chart are being shared in Chinese language media. In other words, they're not sending the message to the people who need to hear they're doing things wrong, it's going out to the people who already know. It's just raising tensions.

A lot of white people are going to find out what it's like to be on the other side of racism

I am worried I'll be lumped in with them, despite not being an expat

Sorry, second rant of the day and it's not even 8am

I think this crisis has actually opened the eyes of a lot of people as to how society really functions. Lots of people you normally wouldn't consider 'front line' but really do play an integral role in just keeping the cog rolling.

I've been making an effort to say "thanks for all you're doing" instead of just "thanks" to people that are doing their best to make this bearable - who are probably just as scared/worried as everyone else.

i am amazed at how fking entitled and selfish some people can be, especially during this crisis. case in point, this old cunt has an appointment to get her services upgraded today. as her current services are working fine, upgrade appointments becomes the lowest priority and is to be canceled and rebooked. i called this customer to explain the situation and the cunt and her old hag husband comes on the phone screaming at me demanding i arrive and do the work. through back and forth, they kept on saying they're not sick and threatening me theyre gonna cancel if i dont show up, and of course, play the power card that shes on strata and has the power to convince the tenants in the building to switch providers. later in the conversation i come to find they just fking returned from california 2 days ago and arent isolating themselves. i asked y theyre not isolating and again they scream that they are fine and not sick. then the cunt demands to speak with a manager, greatest fking word to come out of her mouths as i now dont have to deal with her anymore, and MAYBE listening to someone else repeat the terms will make her understand. later on i come to find out she insists on the appointment cause once she goes through with the upgrade, she gets a 25% discount and is the last person in her building to upgrade... i... am... fking... livid...

LOL we actually screen all the calls since last week and cancel all upgrades apt. Most people are ok. There are some asshole like the you deal with. I just simply say is up to you to cancel as our tech safety is more important at this point. There isn't anything they can say afterwards. Those that still want to speak to a supervisor will have to wait a day or two and they will get the same answer. There is a time to try to bend over but not is not the time.

We even ask customer if they been out of the country or been in contact without that's out of the country for the past 2 weeks and if they are sick. If the answer is yes we won't book an apt till 2 weeks later. If our tech feels unsafe during the apt IE in your case then our tech have the right to leave and not complete the install. They can bitch all they want and we aren't sending anyone back.

We do try our best to help customer but we aren't about to send anyone in unless we have to.

So Taiwan, who is blocked from being part of the WHO, warned them about the virus and human-to-human transmission in December, and were ignored.

Meanwhile, WHO spread misinformation provided to them by China, as late as mid-January. According to them at this time, there was no evidence of human transmission, and none of their healthcare workers got infected. The virus went away as soon as they shut down the Wuhan wet market on Jan 6.

Edit: I should remind people now, don't blame "China" for this, blame the CCP. The citizens of China were not involved in the lies, and in fact they tried to "whistle blow" and were arrested and silenced for their efforts.

If you're a flat rate employee who works in their own little area and wipe down the car I see the risk being minimal. I'm not going to judge others from making a living or the bosses that need to pay their lease but I wont blame you for staying home.

The blame relies on the government for keeping the charades going.
I am cognizant to the fact that some customers could be in dire need and up the creek if we completely shut down.
They had a shop meeting today, and the boss basically said, If you want to stay home, stay home. If you want to work, stay and work. At least half the techs are staying home. I assume (hopefully) laid off.

I spoke to the manager and told them I'll come in only for customers who's concerns risk them being immobile. I will retain the right to refuse work if anything besides detrimental issues are passed off.
This will at least minimize interactions, lower the number of employees needed, and send the message to customers.
I'll be working evenings with one other tech. This way the vehicles have at least been sitting for most of the day so the surfaces will be less dangerous. Will still be wiping down everything i touch of course, and wearing gloves.
It's not perfect. Ideally I'd like to stay home completely. But there is some moral obligation to those that may genuinely need help.
I think it's the best compromise that could be figured.

I was, of course, initially very critical of this government's response. But after deep thought, there is much more to managing a pandemic than my peripheral view may have been privy to.
