Honda to restart S2000 parts production

Quote:

Honda's first passenger car was a sports car. In 1999, Honda created the S2000 with all of its accumulated technology, ideas and passion.

Until now, many S2000 owners have inquired about the sale of genuine parts.

In order to keep the owners enjoying the S2000 for a long time and riding, we have worked hard as the Parts Division to keep the S2000 continuous sales parts ratio from dropping, but until now there has been no opportunity to convey this thought and activities, We have not been able to provide owners with the peace of mind of continuing to sell genuine parts.

Considering what we can do, we have decided to disclose the parts catalog as a means of delivering genuine parts information.

We are currently working on the production with thanks to all owners who love the S2000.

We hope you'll wait a while for the release.
We have prepared a plan for genuine parts of S2000, so please join us.

February 2020 Parts Division

[How to participate in the campaign]

They're having to restart parts production for a vehicle they stopped making only 11 years ago?

danned 02-20-2020 09:43 PM

not exactly interchangeable off the shelf civic/corolla parts, not to mention on a bespoke platform that moved less units in a decade than the F-150 did in a month (which can cut parts support 7 years out)

My understanding is the law only requires them to supply parts for 10 years or so. My guess on how this works is they estimate how much of each part/part in demand they will need for there to be just enough at the end of the 10 years so there isn't a bunch of parts sitting on the shelf. Not a chance they're making every part for 10 years.

They just make runs of these parts through the first few years and let the stock die down to zero at year 10. It would be insane for them to tool up to crank out parts for these cars year after year. They're also not going to make every part for the S2k by the sounds of it. They're not going to tool up a machine to make a knob for Billy in Richmond. That would be a financial hell hole. My guess is it's going to be mostly fenders/seats/interior trims/lights. Easy to damage parts and not a whole lot of aftermarket options that look exactly the same.

I guess I'm a bit spoiled by Toyota, up until a couple years ago I could still buy the bespoke bumper and hood for my car direct from Toyota. The bumper was only used on 1800 cars originally and the hood on 5000 so maybe they just messed up the numbers and made way too many.
