Collector plate for 15 yr old limited production car?

I have a 2005 CLK 55 AMG Cabriolet (Convertible) which recently just became 15 years old and I'm wondering if I can get collector plate for it. According to ICBC's website:

A limited production vehicle 15 years or older, and
1 of no more than 1,500 of that make and model (not edition) produced worldwide by the manufacturer for that model year.

I was only able to find the yearly production number for USA which was 662 cars. Canada is about 10th the size of US so I assume maybe 62 cars in Canada? How do I find out if the world wide number is less than 1500? Lastly, does the hand built AMG models count as different model from the regular CLK? if not then the number would be way over 1500.

Yah for Mercedes they do count the AMG as separate.

You need a letter or email from the manufacturer confirming there was less than 1500 of your car made worldwide in that year.

I know the 93 GS-R used to fall in that category till ICBC decided it was just a trim, and GS-R's now fall under the Integra line.
Have to check, but I think there is a chance the CLK 55 might fall under the whole CLK line.

AMGs are always a completely separate model. I know of a few 2001-2002 CLK55 AMGs already driving around Vancouver with collector plates.

For Boostaholic's 2005, Mercedes made 2711 CLK 55 AMG Convertibles from 2003-2006. Thus, 2005 numbers are likely quite a bit less than 1500.

Saw a Nissan Pulsar with collector plates on it the other day. Can't wait for the day when we see them on Corollas.

Any stock good condition 25 year old car qualifies!

I’ve seen a Ford Aerostar with them recently

I'm sure I'm not the only one that loves seeing immaculate examples of completely normal cars from 20-30 years ago out on the road.

Questions:

- my mazzy has limited production runs. Would it qualify for the 15 year thingy ?
- her dads sc430 is almost 20 years old. When it hits 25 will I need to get those dinner plate rims back to qualify for collectors insurance ? If so then it’s doooooommmeeeddd.

It's always better / easier to have the original wheels, but era-specific wheels quality. You may need to prove that they are era-specific should they ask you.

1) Yes
2) no, you can use any era specific rim on the car as long as they’re only 1” bigger at most (ie: if the factory rims are 17” you can also run an 18” rim)

Keep in mind you must own a regular insured vehicle to have a cheap insurance collector plate car (it can’t be your only vehicle) and you can never drive to work not even 1 day a month.

There is a 92 Lexus ES300 in my neighborhood with collector plates. It's neat to see regular cars in mint condition.

sweet thanks for that link. I tried to email MB Canada but no response so far. I will try to use that as a proof on the application to see if it works.

Will update back if the application succeeds.

PS. Richard I love your youtube channel. Watched pretty much all of your videos, didn't know you are on Revscene.

^ Looking forward to the update

For those with collector plate insurance, what year/make/model and how much do you pay annually?

I have a 93 Prelude SR-V and the basic is $172 a year + $35 license fee + $31 for $1,000,000 3rd party liability for a total of $238. (Just happen to have the renewal paper in front of me).

However, if you want collision and comp, it shoots up past $500.

My 94 MR2 Turbo is roughly the same, slightly more expensive. I think it's $300 a year for the basic + 3rd party and $550ish including collision and comp.

I have a 45% discount.

^ I think you’ve got a few years to go even if it was an EM1? 2024?

Reminder again -> you must also have a regularly insured vehicle to qualify although my future workaround is to make a 250cc motorcycle my regularly insured vehicle lol...

Just to be more specific about this, at least what my insurance agent told me, is that I need to be the RO on at least one other vehicle.
So in my case, my wife and I are the Registered Owners on the f10, but she is the Principal Operator, and my NSX continues to get renewed for collectors insurance no problem.

I put in the application for my CLK55, but I was told my autoplan broker that I listed on the application is now closed due to Covid19, so I'm not sure if I'd get the plate any time soon if approved.

Got my collector plate today. Also flushed the brake fluids and gave the car a quick rinse then went for a drive. Thanks again @richardmozis for the link on production number. That was enough proof for ICBC to approve my application.

The insurance premium still ended up being higher than I thought it would be. I was paying $2500 a year (max discount), now I think it's about $1000 per year.

I'm thinking of adding another collector car to the garage for the winter for trips up the mountain for snowboarding. Something AWD, fast, and reasonable priced, reasonably reliable.

Some of the cars I considered are like G55 would fit the criteria but I couldn't find production number on those and they are too pricey. Plus I heard they don't drive very well.

R63 is rare enough for collector but too rare to find one for sale. Plus problematic M156 engine.

E55 wagon are cool and fast with good engine but is RWD so not as good as AWD for going up the mountain.

ML63 too many were made so not eligible for collector and same engine problems as R63.

You guys have any suggestions?
