Advance collision and Ina Motors (small used car sales) both in Victoria started laying off staff.

Just had a chat with express this morning, they are slowly shifting there express team and adjusters to work from home. They just don't have the capacity at this moment to set everyone up at once.

Regardless we are going full bore for intake while taking necessary precautions. We are busy enough to keep going and unlike most shops, we don't take cars in without approval and parts.

Our shop is big enough(25 bays total with 8 techs) to safely accommodate staff while maintaining a good social distance. We've minimize allowed customers in the office with crowd control rope to keep customers away from front desk worker and requiring all customers wear gloves(we supply) when entering.

That being said, we've laid off(by choice) 2 of our staff already and anyone else not wanting to be here will have that choice also.

Our service dept has people coming in for mostly warranty work or oil changes. Parts dept can't shut down unless service shuts down first. Sales isn't selling anything. It's fucking stupid. I had one 80+ year old man come in today looking for a step pad for his camper van and he couldn't even remember the year of his vehicle. I literally sold one drain plug and one air filter today.

Automotive related businesses are listed as essential businesses in Toronto. Likely the rest of the provinces follow suit. IMO, we're going to learn a hard lesson in crisis management when literally everything is deemed essential.

Different countries have different situations. Just because country A did it doesn't mean we have to copy them. A personal vehicle is a lot more important in North America than in Europe or China. This is not to mention that:

A. Public transits may be affected and shut down down the line
B. You probably want to minimize the number of trips to the grocery shop, so you need a car to carry the groceries
C. Other essential workers may need to commute in their personal vehicles, and some essential businesses need to use vehicles

People's cars can still break down so they still need to get fixed, so at least the service and parts departments need to stay open.

Isn’t there a body that oversees dealer operations?
IMO shut down sales (why is it even open and my car lease is up is a terrible excuse) and shut down all non-essential services ie unless your car can’t start, brake pads are done, or need safety recalls, stay home. They need to make oil changes case by case (maybe you’re a respiratory tech that commutes 150km a day)....no fucking installation of spoilers and applecarplay
