This WFH shit has really exposed a lot of "leaders" out there as being wholly incompetent and unfit to lead. In times like this, it's obvious who the true leaders are.
Imagine working at the hospital and having this exact same thought.
When I tell people what my WFH experience has and continues to be, people don't believe me, because it's a fucking nightmare.
My CEO forces himself into literally every single meeting (3x per week for SCHEDULED 1-1.5 hour "collaboration" meetings, used to be daily but people bitched, often another 3x per week of random meetings up to an hour or more, that no one gets invites for and just gets invited into a group call without any warning), and gets everyone, including his exec team, to tell him specifically what they're working on. The kind of meetings where you could put the entire call on mute for the extent of the meeting and not miss a single thing.
After everyone finishes sharing what they're working on and what kind of successes/challenges they've encountered, the CEO will then spend at least 20-30 mins critiquing everyone, and tell us what HE expects we should do. He calls it collab meetings, but it's the biggest waste of time ever since it's just people reporting to him what they're working on and what work they've done.
The average age of staff in my office is like 55, lots of boomers with not a single clue of how to use any sort of technology (even Skype, they've never heard of Slack/Zoom any of these things), it took our retiree IT guy a good 2 weeks to reroute our office phone line to our Skype Business apps, which didn't work and he got super upset when people bitched at him, literally told the company that fixing IT issues was not his responsibility alone like bruh who else is gonna fix IT issues if it's not the IT guy? Then after he finally made it work, he said he was switching us all over again to Teams and gave us the wrong date for the switchover, so no one in the company received any calls for a week cause he fucked up the dates.
CEO also has no concept of respecting people's personal time, calls people way before their start time and way after their end time (usually 7am or 7pm, never for any productive reason), then gets upset when people don't pick up, and he throws hissy fits (raises voice, uses confrontational/rude tone) about how no one is working and he needs people to be responsible.
Been job hunting since the first week of WFH. Some super toxic shit going on.
Then I compare myself to my gf, who's getting forced into two 1hr meetings every single day where her boss asks her "what is your vision for the business" literally every single day, exact same question. Like is someone's vision for the company supposed to change on a daily basis? LOL.

All that shit was basically my last job.
We wanted to WFH before this whole thing started and they went on and on about productivity has to be unchanged, and people need to be available.
We asked them how to measure productivity and they gave us no answer. Management has been known to give out unfair, unmeasurable goals, and the OG team members have been known to game the system.
Without them having measured everyone before hand, there was no way people weren't going to game the system. It was also impossible to measure team throughput because there have been a lot of attrition.
The pilot was supposed to start in Jan, then it got pushed to Feb. Then March. I said fuck this and got a new job. Since our jobs were not "essential" they were forced to let everyone WFH. My old coworkers told me, 3 days in and the director deems it a "success".
WTF? What success? Under what criteria? Nothing. It's been a joke.
My new job, I started on Mar 16. I went in to the office to pick up my equipment and get some setting up done. They ordered lunch cause it was my first day, but only like 5 people showed up, and told us to fuck off home after lunch. I've been working from home ever since.
Can anyone recommend a decent laptop right now for $500?
Intended usage just youtube, netflix, spreadsheets. Nothing crazy.
I was looking at refurbished business books like Dell Latitudes ~$400 and Lenovo T460s for $500. Thoughts?
If these 2 checkout, they are pretty great value, the T470 is supposedly even better than the T460! 6th gen i5, 16 GB RAM, 256GB SSD. Try to knock off $30-40 off and you got yourself an even better deal!

These are a steal. I got my T460 from Lenovo black Friday sale a couple years ago. Base i3 + 4gb ram + 500gb was around $600?
But I had to add a 500gb ssd + 32gb of ram (around + $300?)
If buying new, I would definitely recommend going for the upgraded battery pack. It doesn't sit flush, so the laptop will be tilted but the battery life is worth it. When I was still in school, I got about 2 days worth without charging?

Are any of you guys dealing with bosses/superiors/supervisors/managers etc. either beginning to, or are already full-on micromanaging you, because of WFH?
It's killing me.
A little bit. In our job we mostly WFH anyways (3-4 times per week, I usually cheat and WFH 4 times, though).
Not so much micromanaging, just a lot of Zoom meetings, at times in which you know they're making sure we're up.
Our director will have calls @ 8:30 twice a week, and my team also meets a few times a week @ 10. We also do "happy hour" once a week at 4PM which is optional, but somewhat frowned on if you don't go sometimes, basically beers and shooting the shit.
It's not so much big brother, I think more the company is trying to keep us engaged and social.
All meetings require us to go on webcam as mandatory. So it is quite funny seeing some coworkers just look absolutely terrible first thing in the morning, LOL.
I do find these meetings tend to be a dick wagging contest though, where you'll get the brown-nosers taking up 80% of the airspace by asking fake questions and comments on things they/we already know about. I find that part the most exhausting, I'm sure some of you deal with that as well.
i don't get why some companies make webcams mandatory, wfh for 7 years already and we have never been required to show our faces, teleconferencing works just fine
I work in a pretty conservative industry so I'm half tempted to just give myself a mohawk since I'm not going to see any clients for quite a while.
If I didn’t like the undercut, I was fully prepared to go Mohawk. Might still do it eventually... I say go for it.
Regarding video conferencing, we had to every morning initially as well.. until last week when my boss decided 3 days per week was enough. So that’s good.
I can’t sleep in.. been getting up 6:30-7 most mornings anyway so I don’t need to be checked up on lol

I think it's so you can simulate the real-life experience as much as possible. Also, if you're in a conference with multiple people, it is hard to tell who is speaking and having your face shown identifies who is actually speaking.
People also say that a big part of communication is actually non-verbal gestures (facial expressions, hand gestures, etc).
There are no principles, there are only events. There is no good and bad, there are only circumstances. The superior espouses events and circumstances in order to guide them.
Went golfing today, there was some debate as to social distancing etc On the radio but it was perfectly fine. can’t see any reason to not keep them open. It’s farrrr safer than going to a grocery store, getting take out etc. Everyone respected distancing and there was no push from groups behind etc. At all. Beauty day

Buy a pair of hair clippers locally or online and then watch YouTube videos on how to do it. It's not really all that hard, but it does take time and patience. My entire YouTube feed recommends me all sorts of haircut videos now because I've been watching so many of them

It's funny this is brought up, because we're into week 4 or week 5 of WFH now, and it is easy to see how our online group meetings have been gradually changing. During week 1, everybody was still paying attention to the camera and the (online) meeting. But just this past week, nobody except for the current speaker and our manager is really actively looking at the screen. We're all just looking at our own other screen(s), doing whatever we are doing -- be it work-related or not -- and only listening in on the current conversation. We don't even make any conscious attempt to hide that or pretend we are listening.
But I gotta say my team has been pretty attentive -- when related stuff comes up or someone is specifically asked for input, everyone is very much on the ball. They jump back into the conversation like they have been paying full (or near full) attention the whole time, and just pick up from where things were left off. I was impressed LOL~

Tequila soda, eh? I hate the regular Nudes, Tequila better?

I love young leaders.... there is a reason why leaders need grit and not just years in a company. At times like this, leadership is key and being a brown nose doesn't work no more.
Give it 2 months, work will start laying off round 2 due to lack of sales. Anything going on now is due to farming from sales 3 months ago, there is NOTHING to buy in the next 6 months.
Company can't just "change your quota" and they have to report to share holders. It's bound to come. That's when you know who is redundant and who can last until the end in a crisis.

Good to know.. have a social distance round booked for tomorrow and am still feeling kinda sketchy about it. The course I’m playing isn’t very walkable and my buddy has a bum knee so we’ll be sanitizing the crap out of individual carts.
The pro shop did say my wife could ride shotgun without paying/playing so that’s pretty awesome of them. My friend’s wife is joining as well so the gals can talk from a safe distance while we play some whack fuck.

I hope it'll be the same case with me. They initially said they'll mail me the gear, but afterward, they said I'll have to go in since it'll be a bit easier to get things started in person.
I want an excuse to get a gaming chair at home. lol
