Exhaust Rusted Off
 

The exhaust on my parents' 97 CRV rusted off at hanger 12 in the diagram so there is a roughly 2" hole where the hanger used to be. I brought it to Hoegler's and they quoted me $425+tax for a new part and labour. It's a fair price considering it's a new part and everywhere online is showing $220-350 USD for the part only. But I told them I'd think about it because the car is not worth that much..

I'm not really needing a brand new part - so what would my other options be?
1. Wrecker? Are most of the ones in the city on Mitchell Island? But condition of the part may be similar to mine
2. Or would it be cheaper/more effective for them to cut a section off the end of the pipe and just weld a new piece on?

Are they keeping it much longer? Cheapest option is to use muffler tape and tie it up with a wire coat hanger.

If it's on a straight section stick a band clamp over it. If it's on a bend or too badly rusted replace the whole pipe. There are different grades of pipes, that original one lasted 20+ years, most jobber pipes last 5.

Does the hanger have the chunk of pipe still attached? I'd give it a bunch of wraps of muffler tape to seal it, then put a clamp either side of the hanger to hold the broken piece in place so it isn't all hanging on the tape.

Also RockAuto has a new pipe for $280 CAD delivered (don't forget a 5% off code), with gaskets and new hanger bushings you're probably at $300 and an hour of your time. Not a huge difference but it'd save you $175 over having the shop do it.

Cut to good metal in front of and behind the joint and replace it with a section of pipe.

I think there is a chunk of pipe still attached to the hanger. I'll have to get under there to confirm again but I ordered some muffler tape that's arriving today and will be trying to tackle it this weekend

just get one of these and call it a day.

literally all that needs to be done is cut a few inches of pipe out where the hanger broke off and created a hole. Then weld on a new hanger to the new section of pipe. This should be at most $100 at a muffler shop.

That’s what I’m getting 2- 18inchers and then after installing em gonna warm them up and do the water trick :fullofwin:
