That Lexus suspension tune is great. That ZF box in the Giulia is superbly tuned though.... way more so than in the Charger/Challenger

Type S revving video shot at a local Acura dealership. I'd say it sounds like a tractor, but that would be offensive to RoverT's 335d.

Need to be a member of that group to see it. Here's another clip:

Sounds ok to me but nothing special and could use a bit more sizzle.

Hakkaboy 06-22-2021 06:59 AM

Here's the sound from inside the Type S, but with annoying salespeople talking

While the Type S is getting decent reviews it's a pretty underwhelming effort from Acura IMO. This is their top of line engine, likely the last new gas engine they produce that's intended to power their largest vehicles like a MDX and all they do is a single turbo that makes 355hp? At least be competitive with Mercedes and BMW at around 380hp (the BMW is way underrated too). Give it a 48v electrical system for some light hybrid assist.

I can't imagine Acura engineers going "Let's best only the lowest powered competition by 1hp with an all new turbo V6" but that's what it seems like it choose to do. They might have well spent the money on hybridising the 2.0T to give it another 100hp which would have given them something to really talk about (better fuel economy, V6 performance from a 4 etc)

^ it's $60k too so I'm not sure who the target audience is. Since the g70 g80 is a thing now.

You nailed it on the head.

Went to see the TLX A-Spec and the Lexus IS300/350 and ES250/350. The TLX is just bizarre. It still tries to brand itself as premium but the materials and fit and finish don't compare to Lexus in any way. And yes, the TLX looks big on the outside, but inside...it was like WTF? :alone:

My girlfriend recently just bought a 2021 TLX A-Spec and this is pretty much how I feel about it. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car but when you're comparing it to the competition I find it kind of falls short. Fit and finish feels like it's halfway between a Honda and a Lexus and same with the materials used.

I always considered Lexus' infotainment to be a bit boring and non-innovative when you compare it to the Germans but one thing I really dislike about the TLX is the infotainment and the "true touch" touch pad is terrible imo. Don't even get me started about Honda's/Acura's stupid "shifter".

I haven't had very much seat time with it but it does drive nice, chassis and suspension feels responsive especially for it's choker weight and transmission feels good. Would I get one myself? Most likely not.

I hope she is not on Revscene

I’d be pretty pumped if my woman chose something like an A-Spec TLX at least she’s got a bit of enthusiast in her or likes cool looking stuff!!

Even if she was, I already told her what I thought but whatever makes her happy and it's her money right? :lawl:

She's got a bit of car blood in her, her mom used to have an NSX back in the day

If she still had it, I'd dump her and go for the mom :fullofwin:

She meant the Nissan NX, not the NSX.

Well at least that answers the which came first question… was definitely the egg

twitchyzero 08-03-2021 11:13 PM

wonder how much acura spent versus how many will actually sell

!Aznboi128 08-04-2021 06:53 AM

From ^ review, the type-s is exactly how the type-s was before. Just a small upgrade to the TL/TLX line rather than an all-out performance sedan. At $60k it's cheaper than M340i but more than the G70 with the 3.3T.

twitchyzero 08-04-2021 07:34 AM

i dont think it's small upgrade at least not in cost: gaining 2-cyl, bracing, sways, bigger brakes etc.

the performance dont seem match up going like 85% of a type-r like the is500 is to a F

i know almost no one's gonna take this on track regularly but probably the expectations were too high after fk8 managed to hang or beat german rivals in traditionally superior layouts..rdx also knocked it out of the park besides infotainement and fuel efficency

possibly a tune will make it shine especially shift points, bummer on the weight given it also has to replace the RLX

maybe the nsx type-s detailed in a few days will make up for the marketing

roastpuff 08-04-2021 07:53 AM

I think that Acura over-hyped the car (see the marketing material) and didn't deliver to back up what they were claiming. Sad and unfortunate.

Hakkaboy 08-04-2021 08:33 AM

The performance jump on the new Type S over the Aspec TLX does seem to be more of an upgrade than the 3G Type S over base TL, but yeah, the German's are on a different level.

twitchyzero 08-04-2021 08:44 PM

i dont think they would've done double wishbones/aluminum bits if they didn't plan the type S

so in that regard it's a letdown (some bespoke design yet still underperforming compared to the competition)

nabs 08-05-2021 12:10 PM

I just saw one of these on the road at night in black, it looks amazing! It looks like a super car from the back at night.

k3mps 08-27-2021 06:33 PM

I had a discussion with a friend recently about this car and thought of this thread.
Here are my opinions and mine only.

I've never been a fan of Honda's / Acura's personally despite us having owned 2 MDXs of 2 generations (and both had numerous problems, mostly the same)
I've always found their cars underwhelming and overrated.

The TLX-S is definitely one of them.
Now my friend is a big Honda fanboy so we bickered around about this car.
He said the car was very quick and that's what the marketing and hype will make you believe however we all know 355 hp/tq in a 4250lb car, make a fast car it does not.

Then we talked about the competition - G70, S4, M340i, Q50.

The S4 is a few thousand more, has similar HP, more torque, weighs a few hundred pounds less, is almost a second faster to 60, better interior, and arguably more dynamic to drive. Having driven the S4, I quite like the Quattro AWD feel when pushed hard.

The M340i is also several thousand more however has much more power, is much faster to 60, arguably the best in class in terms of driving dynamics, and sounds better.

The Q50 while much older has much more power, is faster to 60, weighs a bit less, and with the experience I have behind the wheel of the Red Sport, I can't imagine can drive worse than the TLX-S. The Q50 at least will rotate as requested around bends.

The G70 comes in at a lower price point for the comparable 3.3T engine, has more power, is faster and lighter, reportedly very dynamic to drive, and has a better warranty, and has the "Genesis at Home" experience.

I understand it has a lower price point than S4/M340i or even C43, however I don't think people shopping for TLX-S are necessarily the people who would be shopping an S4/340/C43. They are however people that will buy one and tell you it's on par performance wise as any of those cars because that's what Acura has hyped the car to be.
Reliability? Having talked to Service personnel at Acura dealers, they seem to have their fair share of problems just like any other brand.
I don't believe people who are shopping around this type of car will care too much about the 5-10,000 difference between this and the Germans as they're already in such a high price bracket and looking for a specific driving experience but I could be completely wrong. I think the interior is subpar in terms of ergonomics and materials as well.

TL/DR I think the car's a flop and I think they completely missed the mark, but what do I know about cars. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.

TypeRNammer 08-27-2021 06:45 PM

Throttle House recently did a drag race, looked slow compared to the Stinger and G70

!Aznboi128 08-28-2021 07:20 AM

I've driven both the G70 and Stinger, they're quick cars and in this comparison, the Stinger is the obvious winner. Bigger back seats, more usable trunk as it's a hatch and it's priced less. But people who are buying this segment see the badge Acura vs Kia and people will think of a high-end vehicle vs a Hyundai Pony.

It's sad but it's the truth.

Speaking of comparison, you can get a CT5-V for 50k Canadian sure it's only RWD but it's a bargain for everything you're getting.
