Costco has 91, no ethanol

bcrdukes 08-16-2020 04:18 PM

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure if Shell 91 in BC has ethanol or not. Last I remember, it does not, but that was at least 4 years ago.

No luck on ethanol-free 87 octane to my knowledge.

Shell 91 has no ethanol anywhere in Canada. They say it right on their website.

Shell V-PowerŪ NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline helps keep your engine running like new* with:
Four levels of engine protection against gunk, wear, corrosion and friction
The highest octane of all Shell fuels at 91 octane
The highest concentration of the Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System
Seven times the minimum amount of cleaning agents required by federal standard
0% ethanol at every station in Canada
Chevron 94 is also ethanol-free in BC.

Q. What is Ethanol?
A. Ethanol is ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, mainly produced in the Midwestern United States from corn stock and in more limited quantities in Canada from wheat. It can be used as a biofuel alternative to gasoline. British Columbia and Canada require that gasolines contain an average of 5 % renewable fuel content. To meet BC's Renewable Fuel Standard, Chevron gasolines may contain up to 10% ethanol. Chevron Supreme Plus, 94 octane is ETHANOL FREE and available at all Chevron locations in British Columbia.
Husky 91 is ethanol-free. You can get 87 that is ethanol-free in Calgary.

A selection of octane levels to suit your needs

Octane 87. Regular with ethanol (available in all provinces)
Octane 87. Regular with no ethanol (Calgary area)
Octane 89. Mid-grade (regular blended with premium, available in all provinces excluding SK, may contain ethanol in some areas)
Octane 91. Premium - no ethanol (available in all provinces excluding SK)
Octane 92. Premium with ethanol (SK & MB)
Octane 94. Premium Plus with ethanol, the highest octane fuel available (AB, SK & MB)
Canadian Tire implies that their 91 is ethanol-free, but doesn't explicitly state it.

Other than Co-op 91, Shell 91 and Chevron 94, I don't really know any gas that doesn't have ethanol.

Not that it matters for an average family car, really.

SkinnyPupp 08-16-2020 04:52 PM

IMO if you're buying 87 you probably don't need to worry about the performance loss (or whatever) caused by ethanol LUL

twitchyzero 08-16-2020 04:53 PM

E10 is probably better for maintenance if the engine is GDI

i only care about E0 if it's barely driven or being stored and designed last century

Man you guys all driving Veyrons or something? I put anything in both my cars.

Most luxury brands and turbocharged cars require premium. My Honda Civic and, previously, my BMW 325 were certainly not supercars.

!LittleDragon 08-16-2020 05:54 PM

Do most people drive their cars hard enough to need 91? I just toss in 87 for my N/A motor. I'm not going to miss 20hp, 400hp is still plenty... lol

Yeah, but not brands. If it says 91, it's going in the tank.

likely taking a mpg hit too
if it's high compression give it what it wants

Yes... I bought a 5.0L V8 because I'm concerned with MPG... The manual says you can run it on 87 minimum, you just won't get full power out of it. Most drivers never need full power unless they're the type to floor it off every light. Modern cars can compensate for the type of fuel you put in.

twitchyzero 08-16-2020 08:34 PM

saving $10-15 per fill
not concerned about mpg
:suspicious:

!LittleDragon 08-16-2020 08:44 PM

It's not worth it to me, I don't notice any measurable increase in MPG using 91 the way I drive.

UnknownJinX 08-16-2020 10:20 PM

I floor my SS quite a bit, or at least drive it hard. It's not like I will crash into the crowd like a certain Ford when I floor it. :troll:

Manual says 93 recommended while 87 is fine. I use Petro-Canada 94 since I am in Alberta now. In BC I will probably use Chevron 94, though I wouldn't be too concerned with any 91 if that's not an option.

I think the pump at Husky stations say their 91 gas still contains ethanol, even though their webpage says otherwise.

I have no idea who is right.

That's for old cars. Modern cars are designed to run up to 10% ethanol. Flex fuel cars are designed to run E85.

bcrdukes 08-16-2020 11:31 PM

I find that it's arguable, but based on anecdotal (emphasis on anecdotal!) a colleague of mine ran 87 Husky gas almost exclusively on his 2015 Civic (it's on his daily commute home, so why not?) One day, his Civic just gave up with CEL popping up on the dashboard, and wouldn't start anymore. Towed to Honda dealer and did a diagnostic. Kept the car for about a week, and turns out the fuel injector seals were shot due to the fuel.

Was this a unique situation? Bullshit? Dealer trying to make my colleague buy a a new car? I don't know. But that was the official diagnostic on behalf of the dealer, including Honda Canada's regional technical manager.

UnknownJinX 08-17-2020 07:15 AM

But all 87 fuels are E10 in BC. Most of the cars on the road use them, so a single oddball incident doesn't really say much.

bcrdukes 08-17-2020 07:20 AM

Sorry, should have clarified, and not that it matters a whole lot, but this was in Ontario.

Bad for plastics and rubber, and absorbs more water.

I use nothing but ethanol free for some things, others I'm not picky. What are you gassing up?
